This may be the most difficult and challenging stage of the race. The steep last kilometers should allow considerable time gaps and the overall will be shaken for sure. As the saying goes, the race won't be won today, but it can be lost.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
As I'm still way more in shape than Sylvester, I have the leader's role for today. The climb is steep which suits me well so I hope for a decent result in this dense concurrence.
Km 13: | Several riders are spread in front of the peloton. | . | Km 34: | Seven riders around Björn Leukemans are 1'30 in front of the pack. | . | | | Km 40: | Four more riders made it to group, which seems to be the break of the day. | . | | | Km 42: | One of the pre race favorites, who lost already a couple of minutes, is Heinrich Haussler. He obviously still has ambitions as he attacks! | . | | | Km 59: | The 14 riders are four minutes in front. Juraj Sagan does the pace in the peloton now. Liquigas seem to have a plan for today. | . | Km 88: | Not only Liquigas but also Movistar takes the lead now and the gap of the escapees is stable at about 2 minutes. | . | Km 116: | And everything is back together. | . | | | Km 128: | Garmin's Sep Vamarcke crosses the top of the first climb as the race leader. He's two minutes in front of the pack. | . | Km 142: | Vanmarcke increased his lead to four minutes over the second mountain. 58 kms to go. | . | | | Km 158: | Although the peloton increased the pace, a couple of riders try to attack. Astarloza is followed by Barredo, De Gendt and Mauro Finetto! | . | Km 166: | Not too surprising, they get caught shortly afterwards. | . | Km 179: | Vanmarcke is caught now, too. 75 riders will enter the last climb together. | . | | | Km 189: | With 11 kms to go, the fight is opened. Overall leader Ivan Gutierrez attacks! | . | | | Km 192: | While Gutierrez was reeled in by Leopard, now Intxausti attacks. Nerz is still a good position. | . | | | Km 193: | Intxausti broke free, behind him Leopard started a team attack with Chavanel, Antón and Fuglsang. Another 25 seconds behind is a group of 8 with Nerz and Szmyd. | . | Km 194: | The Leopard trio caught up with Intxausti. Nerz and Szmyd still look decent. | . | | | Km 195: | Nerz slowly loses contact with the very front. Szmyd obviously is better today. | . | | | Km 196: | After a couple of riders caught up with the front, Antón attacks! Intxausti tries to follow as well as Luis Leon Sanchez... | . | | | Km 196: | … meanwhile Sylvester Szmyd leads a small group with Bole and Hermans. He's currently in nineth position. | . | | | Km 197: | Nerz does great! He's still with the likes of Mosquera, Velits and Monfort. A Top 20 finish is possible. | . | | | Km 198: | Ben Hermans attacks, Bole and Szmyd can't follow. They will fight for 10th place. | . | | | Km 199: | The stage is decided. Igor Antón enters the last kilometer with an advance of one minute to Intxausti. Luis Leon Sanchez and Pavel Brutt follow closely. | . | | | Km 200: | Igor Antón had no opposition today. Dominant win for the Spaniard! | . | | | Km 200: | Intxausti, Sanchez and Brutt are already more than 1'30 behind. | . | Km 200: | Klöden leads a small group with Uran, Fuglsang and Chavanel over the line. | . | | | Km 200: | Szmyd outsprints Bole for place 10. Sicard follows. | . | | | Km 200: | Nerz finishes behind Monfort and outsprints Matti Breschel and Ruben Perez for place 23. A nice performance. |

What a day! Calling this a hilly stage is ridiculous! 11 kms with a constant gradient of more than 8%, that was imense. And the result shows that. Antón was without concurrence today.
I soon had to acknowledge that I couldn't fill the role of the team captain today. Sylvester was much stronger. For his shape, the tenth place is great and promising regarding La Vuelta. A Top 10 in his home country would be great, and even the Top 5 are in reach for him.
Personally, I can say that I'm pleased with my performance. 23rd today, 18th overall is nice. A Top 20 in a World Tour race would be awesome. And considering the strength of the field, third in the young riders classification is quite good as well, I think.
The next two days will be very hard again, but I hope to keep my overall place. I'll better try to recover now, see you!

wow the time gaps speak for themselves more a mountaintopfinish than a small hill - nice result for dom one can really see how he is getting better as a complete rider!

Hard stage today. Dominik did well, 23rd's a nice result. Now, everything to help Szmyd climb up in the GC. |

@mresuperstar: Thanks Calling that a hilly stage was pretty ridiculous. The likes of Boonen or Hushovd, who were called favorites by the organisators, had no chance at all...
@johannes-w: I thought the same, too! It's great to see how he can hang on to some very classy riders on such a stage!
@sutty68: Thanks! Glad you like the screens, I mostly try to make the best of it although sometimes the scenery just isn't too appealing
@Alakagom: I'm very happy about that comment! I think it was one of the longest reports I wrote so far in this whole story because there were three parts to follow: The fight for the stage win, Szmyd and Dominik. I thought about focussing more on Dom but after all he just rode and rode...
@dienblad: Yep, agreed
@FreitasPCM: Actually, it won't be all about helping Szmyd in the next stage... but I don't want to tell too much! Oh and by the way, you're already positioning yourself for the next year's avatar awards, aren't you? I like it!
Next stage is coming up early tomorrow, probably.

.
Month 6, 2012
The final ascent isn't as hard as yesterday but therefore, the rest of the stage is more challenging. The cobbled passage shouldn't have too much impact.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
The stage final isn't too hard so maybe Finetto has a chance there. Otherwise, Sylvester will try to improve his overall result while I'll try to defend my Top 20.
| | Km 4: | Juraj Sagan follows Adam Hansen. | . | Km 12: | 15 riders are 2 minutes in front of the pack. | . | | | Km 22: | We have a very strong break of the day! Other notable names are Markus Burghardt, Daniele Bennati and Francisco Jose Ventoso. | Km 56: | The group is already 8 minutes away over the first mountain. | . | | | Km 98: | Rabobank and Movistar take the break seriously. The gap decreases. | . | | | Km 120: | Liquigas passes the cobblestones unified. As expected, it didn't harm anyone. | . | Km 125: | Thomas De Gendt and Mikel Astarloza attacked but they're caught again soon. | . | | | Km 150: | Before the penultimate climb, the main peloton already split! Only 54 riders are together. All Top 10 riders are present but some of the Top 20 are missing. Nerz could advance some places. | . | Km 159: | Over the mountain, part of the break is caught. Only five riders are left in front. | . | | | Km 165: | 8 kms from the finish, Luis Leon Sanchez attacks. | . | | | Km 163: | As Igor Antón goes, Szmyd counters! And behind him, Nerz goes as well! | . | | | Km 171: | Two kms from the finish, Antón leads in front of Intxausti. Behind them is a group of nine including Szmyd and Nerz. | . | | | Km 173: | Antón can celebrate another undisputed win. Intxausti strengthens his second spot. | . | | | Km 173: | Szmyd repeats his good performance and finishes eigth today, behind a group including Brutt, Klöden and Sanchez. | . | | | Km 173: | But way more impressive is Nerz's ride today. He finishes directly behind Szmyd on place nine and advances to 13th overall. |

Nice! My second Top 10 in a World Tour race of my career! A great day. I really didn't expect such a great result as such a rather hilly finish doesn't usually suit me, but today I just had the right timing. I had enough energy left to follow Sylvester when Igor Antón attacked and that group made it.
Now even a Top 10 finish is possible. Vicioso is only 17 seconds in front of me. And Sylvester has the opportunity to advance further as well. At least the sixth place is in reach.
So everything is prepared for a nice final stage tomorrow. Lots of ups and downs await us. It will be a hard day!
Stay tuned,
|

Big gaps on the last two stages. Anton a cut above the rest it seems.
Szmyd and Nerz are doing really well too. 8th and 13th overall is a very good result for Liquigas.

August 7, 2012
The final stage has again the potential to create notable time gaps. The last kilometers aren't too steep but we can expect that the riders are already a bit exhausted from the hills that preceed the final climb. A strong break might have a chance today as well.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
As I said yesterday, our main goal for today is to at least keep my and Sylvester's overall ranks, and if possible, improve them. Also, the stage might be good for a break so either Matthew Busche, Damiano Caruso or Mauro Finetto will try to get in the BotD.
| | Km 1: | As it was the plan, Matthew Busche joins the early attacks. | . | Km 17: | Five riders around Busche are 1'30 in front. | . | Km 30: | More and more riders try to join the front and the pack increases the pace. | . | | | Km 41: | 13 riders are two minutes in front now and seem to stay clear. Next to Busche, there are the likes of Tomas Vaitkus (GreenEdge), Daniele Bennati (Lampre) or Kazakh champion Assan Bazayev. | . | Km 56: | We hear that André Greipel has to abandon. Apparently, he suffers from a tibial fracture. | . | | | Km 83: | Mountain leader Gene Michael Bates (Sky) comes in second over the second mountain. He needs to hope that Antón doesn't score on the finish. The break is seven minutes away. | . | Km 130: | 54 kms to go as Bates takes three points on the last mountain sprint. The break is 5'30 in front. | . | Km 155: | Over the penultimate ascent, the pack streches but still 121 riders are together. The break is still 2 minutes in front but won't make it, probably. | . | | | Km 172: | Antón attacks with 12 kms to go and soon reaches the break. | . | | | Km 178: | With 6 kms to go, Antón is half a minute in front. 80 riders are still together behind him. | . | | | Km 179: | Vicioso and Klöden attack to go after Antón. Szmyd and Nerz are nowhere near the front. | . | | | Km 181,5: | Nerz is somewhere around 25th position but already looks pretty exhausted. Szmyd is a bit further ahead of him. | . | | | Km 183: | While Antón rides towards another undisputed win, Pavel Brutt managed to create a small gap to the large group behind him, on whose end Szmyd tries everything to keep up. | . | | | Km 184: | Antón wins with about a minute of advance. Third triumph in a row! | . | | | Km 184: | Brutt manages to hold off Sanchez and finishes second. | . | | | Km 184: | Nerz finishes almost three minutes down. Luckily, he only loses one place, as well as does Szmyd, who couldn't repeat his Top 10 finishes from the previous stages. |

That was really not what we had hoped for. Sylvester and I had to acknowledge that our legs were horrible today and that it was about limiting the losses, not about attacking the riders in front of us. At least we succeeded in that.
After all, we can be pleased with the results here. Four Top 10s in the stages, Sylvester's Top 10 overall in his home country and of course my surprising 14th overall make this a decent race for the team.
Although, as a result of Antón's domination, we (hopefully only temporary) have to give up the lead in the World Tour team ranking. But firstly, the season isn't over yet, and secondly, that's really not all that counts.
I'll be heading to France for the Tour de l'Ain while Sylvester joins Nibali in his Vuelta preparation at the Eneco Tour.
Stay tuned,

This last stage wasn't the best, but both Dominik and Szmyd lost a place, so it wasn't that bad. A nice result, overall. |
