First stage is from Olbia to Porto Cervo and only 142 kilometres long. The last part of the stage consists the short but steep Porto Cervo (2.0km at 7.7%), so a stage for the puncheurs.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/5509/1route.jpg

7 riders form the BOTD and climb the first categorized hill of the day, the Cima Micalosi. Frantisek Padour (PSK) takes the most points, followed by Pavel Kochetkov (Itera), Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil), Antonio D'Aniello (Colnago), Mikhaylo Khalilov (Amore & Vita), Frantisek Rabon (Omega Pharma) and Pawel Cieslik (Bank BGZ). The gap to the peloton is 8'44 with 93 kilometres to go.
img403.imageshack.us/img403/6938/2kotm1.jpg

The next 60 kilometres nothing happens. The peloton starts a chase (especially Lampre and Katusha) and the leading group has started the ascend of the San Pantaleo. Khalilov takes the points, followed by Padour and Van Leijen. The peloton has to close a gap of 3'58 in the remaining 33 kilometres.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/3895/3kotm2i.jpg

The pace in the peloton drops, so the gap grows to almost 5 minutes. So we decide to start the chase again. 10 kilometres before the finish, the BOTD still has a gap of 2'33.
img210.imageshack.us/img210/4954/410km.jpg

The last climb has started, the Porto Cervo, with gradients up to 13%. The gap to the leading group stays too big, so Wilco Kelderman & Thomas Dekker decide to attack. 5600 metres before the finish, they're 1'53 behind the leading group.
img220.imageshack.us/img220/3170/55600m.jpg

At the summit of the Porto Cervo, the 7 still lead a chasing group by '56. In this group are, besides Kelderman & Dekker, Roberto Ferrari (Androni), Fabio Felline (Nespresso), Leonardo Pinizzotto (Pisanellastoria), Daniele Callegarin (Team Type 1), Sergey Firsanov (Itera), Paolo Tiralongo (Astana) and Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha). So no Lampre-riders in this group!
img819.imageshack.us/img819/7927/64500m.jpg

Wilco Kelderman sets a high pace in the descend, but the chasing group can't sprint for the win, although they get the same time as the winner. It's Amore & Vita's Mikhaylo Khalilov who easily wins the sprint and takes his first win of the year. Antonio D'Aniello gets 2nd, Joost van Leijen 3rd. Kelderman finishes in 8th place, Dekker in 12th.

Word from the DS
Now that was a example of bad timing by the peloton. We are satisfied with our 2 leaders in the first group and are looking forward to the next stages, where climbing abilities will count!

Stage 2 of the Giro di Sardegna brings us a mountain top finish. The start is in Porto Rotondo and the finish outside Nuoro, on the Monte Ortobene (13.3km at 5.7%).
img97.imageshack.us/img97/5509/1route.jpg

In this stage we see the return of one of the better climbers (with and without doping) in the 2000's, Franco Pellizotti. He has joined the Lampre team this year, and has attacked early in the race. He had 7 fellow breakaways, but at the summit of the first climb, only Dmitriy Fofonov (Astana), Riccardo Chiarini (Androni) and Eddy Ratti (Pisanella) can follow Pellizotti. Many people thought he had quit cycling, but surprisingly he signed a contract with Lampre - Generali. 85 kilometres to go an the peloton is 8'14 behind.
img684.imageshack.us/img684/6938/2kotm1.jpg

Also the 2nd climb of the day with it's KOTM-points, goes to Pellizotti. Only Chiarini and Fofonov join him and the 3 have a gap of 5'40 to the peloton with 56.5 kilometres remaining.
img713.imageshack.us/img713/2397/3kotm2.jpg

In the long descend to Nuoro, Chiarini couldn't follow Pellizotti and Fofonov anymore. The 2 leaders have started the last climb. Fofonov has the best legs, but can't prevent that the chasing peloton (about 30 riders left, in it are Dekker, De Gendt & Kelderman) is closing the gap to 1'20.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/4954/410km.jpg

And with about 5 kilometres to go, Fofonov is caught as the last remaining escapee. Now the waiting starts who is the first to attack.
img694.imageshack.us/img694/8995/55km.jpg

And that is Wilco Kelderman! The leader in the U25-rankings attacks with 3500 metres to go and creates a 20 second gap to the chasing group.
img836.imageshack.us/img836/8851/63500m.jpg

Then comes a counterattack out of the chasing group: Joaquím Rodríguez wants to defend his GC-win in Sardegna and is closing the gap to Kelderman quickly. 2 kilometres left and Rodríguez follows at '8 and Thomas Dekker and Paolo Tiralongo (Astana) at '17.
img403.imageshack.us/img403/4413/72km.jpg

Things look bad for Kelderman as Rodríguez has closed the gap, taken the lead and now starts to sprint with 1 kilometre left. Kelderman is pretty empty after his attack... Dekker and Tiralongo follow at '16.
img265.imageshack.us/img265/5063/81km.jpg

And of course Rodríguez has the best sprint and wins the stage. The jury has decided that Kelderman has crossed the line 5 seconds behind Rodríguez (Angry). Tiralongo wins the sprint for the 3rd place at '25.

Word from the DS
Too bad Rodríguez was too strong today, but we are very, very proud at Wilco Kelderman. He did an amazing job, making the pace in the chasing group in the first part of the climb and attacking in the last 3500 metres! The next stages, we will try to surprise Rodríguez, either with Kelderman or Dekker.

As you can see, he improved a lot! And he has still 2 or 3 stars left in Fl,Mo, Hi, TT and some others.... Think he can develop in a Top 10 GC-rider.

Some news from the contract-renewals:
img5.imageshack.us/img5/5794/1gesink.jpg
img824.imageshack.us/img824/1039/2vanendertr.jpg
img822.imageshack.us/img822/2627/3rosseler.jpg
img521.imageshack.us/img521/4297/4demaar.jpg

We are very happy with these contract renewals: Robert Gesink signed for 2 more years (and a better salary, from €62.500 to 80.000 a month), Jelle Vanendert ( from €13.000 to €30.000). Only Poels, Ligthart and Keukeleire have refused renewals at the moment, but I'll give them a new offer later.

img10.imageshack.us/img10/5403/1601l.jpg

The 3rd stage is classified as a mountain stage, the only one in this Giro di Sardegna. After the start in Orani, the riders face a long climb of the Passo Genna Silana (24.3km at 3.6%). The last 7 kilometres are uphill with an average gradient of 6.0% to the town of Lanusei.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/5509/1route.jpg

A group of 10 riders are the first ones to reach the summit of the Passo Genna Silana. José Serpa (Androni), Daniele Pietropolli (Omega Pharma), Daniele Ratto (Nespresso), Santo Anza (Vacansoleil), Mikhail Ignatiev (Itera), Kristjan Fajt (Adria Mobil), Cameron Wurf (Liquigas), Alessandro Bazzana Team Type 1), Elia Favilli (Farnese) and Giuseppe De Maria (De Rosa) are the members of the BOTD. Serpa takes the most points, followed by Bazzana and Ignatiev. With 64 kilometres to go, they have a gap of 6'12 to the peloton.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/1017/2botd.jpg

The peloton, led by the domestiques of Katusha, are closing the gap, but suddenly they stop the chase. That's the moment to let our domestiques do the work, but it's too late to catch the BOTD. So with only 3500 metres to go, they have a gap of 3'01 to the peloton. Pietropolli, Serpa and Ratto have created a gap to the others.
img268.imageshack.us/img268/8341/33500m.jpg

In the following 2.5 kilometres also Ratto gets dropped, so it will be a duel between Pietropolli and Serpa.
img214.imageshack.us/img214/8219/41kmv.jpg

José Serpa wins the sprint-a-deux and takes the win.
img851.imageshack.us/img851/4999/5finish.jpg

Back to the peloton.... 3 kilometres before the finish, Paolo Tiralongo (GC nr 3) attacks and is followed by Thomas Dekker & Wilco Kelderman.
img26.imageshack.us/img26/3852/63km.jpg

The 2 riders from our team even continue their counterattack after they have catched Tiralongo. But in the last 1500 metres, Joaquím Rodríguez is coming very quickly from behind and closes the gap to them. Wilco Kelderman finishes in 10th place at 2'26. Rodríguez gets the same time and Tiralongo and Dekker loose 8 seconds.

Word from the DS
It looks like it's going to be very difficult to regain time on Rodríguez. But we'll keep trying.

The 4th, and penultimate stage, from Lanusei to Oristano (166.6 kilometres) has a very difficult first part of the route. But because the last 50 kilometres are flat, we don't see any time gaps between the favourites at the finish.
img522.imageshack.us/img522/5509/1route.jpg

5 riders must have woken up earlier this day with the thought "I'll attack today, and it will last untill the finish!!". Mikhail Ignatiev (Itera), Salvatore Commesso (Androni), Alan Marangoni (Liquigas), Cristiano Benenati (De Rosa) and Pavel Zitta (PSK Whirlpool) are those riders. And they manage to form a breakaway and the peloton lets them ride away. Ignatiev is the first at the first KOTM-sprint (Gairo Taquisara, 4.4km at 6.9%) and with 141 kilometres to go, they have a 2 minute-gap to the peloton.
img267.imageshack.us/img267/6938/2kotm1.jpg

2nd categorized climb (Monte Arqueri, 8.3km at 5.4%) and the 5 are still in the lead. Commesso is first at the summit, and with 125km to go, the peloton is 5'12 behind them.
img27.imageshack.us/img27/2397/3kotm2.jpg

15 kilometres before the finish, the lead to the peloton is still 2'24. It looks like the peloton has decided to take it slow today. The first one to attack is Salvatore Commesso.
img820.imageshack.us/img820/1105/415km.jpg

And the first attack proofs to be the right one today. For the 2nd day in a row, a breakaway lasts untill the finish and a rider from Androni - Giocattoli wins. 36-year-old Salvatore Commesso takes the win, with a '29-gap to Marangoni and Zitta. The peloton finishes at 1'35.
