That depends on how you see it. As a stage race he probably will be better than Merckx. But not as an allrounder, and that's why you can't compare him to Merckx - he is just "Hors categorie"
Vincenzo Nibali - Rui Costa - Nairo Quintana - Alberto Contador - Peter Sagan
WDshirts
The Last of the Real
- Story about Dries Deckers - racing against Merckx, de Vlaeminck etc.

Thanks for the many replies
And love these Merckx discussions
It's kind of hard to compare them, though. Since this is an age of specialty and Merckx' time wasn't. But Roberto will definitely try to beat his all time GT record of 11 GT's. But Milan San Remo or RvV or other cobbled races will never be his, unfortunately!
His goal isn't to overthrow Merckx, though. He wants to become a new Merckx, a Merckx of this age! |

Perhaps if he trains a lot RvV is possible, I mean, it's 50% hills and 50% cobbles

Not in PCM. It's classified as flat, so the hill stat is far from that important.
And also - amazing results, Ian. Pure domination.

To the RvV discussion: I'm not sure. I don't think it's too realistic. If a rider would get these results, why would he give a shit about RvV? I think it's wiser to just let him be in the things he's good in.
Pellizotty2: Thanks |

World Championships 2014 - Reaching for the Rainbow
World Championship Individual Time Trial
Cancellara taking his sixth ITT title!
1 | Fabian Cancellara | Radioshack Nissan Trek | 54'38 | 2 | Geraint Thomas | Sky Pro Cycling | + 16 | 3 | Tony Martin | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | + 38 | 4 | Toto Michel | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | + 1'02 | 5 | Michael Hepburn | Drapac Professional Cycling | + 1'05 | 6 | Olivier Clausse | Idemasport-Biowanze | + 1'13 | 7 | Alex Rasmussen | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 1'14 | 8 | Dmytro Grabovskyy | Carmim - Prio - Tavira | + 1'23 | 9 | Michal Kwiatkowski | Roubaix Lille Métropole | + 1'28 | 10 | Stijn Devolder | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 1'48 |
World Championship Road Race
On a profile as this, Roberto expected nothing less than a win. And with Philippe Gilbert not starting due to a bad injury, Roberto was the name on everyone's lips.
Roberto Velásquez before the start:
My legs are all right, today. I've been managing my season well. But at days like this, nothing matters except the win. The double I did this year means nothing on a day like this, A World Championship is something magical, and I always give it 100%
We now know that Roberto's absolute favorite race was the Worlds. He thought more of the Worlds than of all three Grand Tours together. In 2014, he went for his second World title.
The Netherlands kept a strong pace, reeling in the breakaway. Atapuma was a part of the breakaway.
And then, with 38km left to go, Roberto accelerated in a way only Roberto could. No one had an immediate answer, and the time gaps were gigantic!
Result
1 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | 7h32'00 | IanButler | 2 | Johny Piqué | Sky Pro Cycling | + 1'21 | | 3 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 2'00 | | 4 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas-Cannondale | + 2'52 | | 5 | Igor Anton | Mipfre - Euskadi | s.t. | | 6 | Maxime Bouet | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | | 7 | Toto Michel | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. | | 8 | Matthew Goss | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | | 9 | Matti Breschel | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | | 10 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky Pro Cycling | s.t. | |
Roberto Velásquez:
I'm extremely happy right now! I want to forget about everything right now, this moment is all that matters. Another year in this beautiful jersey, I just can't believe it. This is the greatest day in my career.
Johny Piqué:
Roberto was the strongest today. No one was a match for him, obviously. I did well, I raced my own pace and a 2nd place is pretty good. Next year I'll take him, I promise.
Roberto Velásquez was slowly shaping into the Legend as we know him today. With 3 Vueltas, 1 Giro, 2 World Titles and 3 Monuments, he was already one of the strongest riders in history. And he wasn't even 25 yet. What he'd bring us in the future would be even more unbelievable! |

fernando97: Thanks mate. I'm too in love with that jersey to let it go
francopell: Triple Crown would be awesome, but that's for later, I think. I hope the profile of next year is hilly!
tovhol: His TT is 73, sprinting 78, Hills 72. It's inexplicable that he's performing so well
Daggen: Hehe
JuanMotr: Thanks Lucky Gilbert was injured!
EDIT: Do hope this story isn't becoming too boring, he's really getting into his domination years now. Feel free to just stop me when it gets so boring you feel like putting a gun to your head
