Volta a la Communitat Valencia
Stage 3: Requena - Mas de la Costa
Last good opportunity to impact the GC as the final two stages are relatively flat. As Rovny lost a large chunk of time in stage 2, Andy is now our main man to attack on this stage. However, if Rovny has legs we will let him go too, just to let him get some action in the early season.
The break consists of 9 riders today. The peloton is only half-hearted in chasing them, and with 32 km to go in the race, the lead stands at 4'40". This is starting to look like a day for the break.
With 7 km to go, the lead is still 4 minutes. The break will take it for sure today. Attacks come from within the break and De Greef and Higgerson manage to get away. They fight it out to the finish line, but De Greef takes it. Nice win for him.
Further down the road, there is still the battle for the GC. Rovny is feeling better today and attacks, allowing Andy to take his wheel.
Jimenez and Cunego join as well, but where is Boasson Hagen and Kohl? Neither has been able to muster a counter-attack.
Of the front group, Schleck is the strongest today and will be first across the line. The time gaps hold up and he gains 32 seconds on Kohl and 40 seconds on the pack. That will leap-frog Andy into 2nd place only 4 seconds back. Nice riding by Andy and great help from Rovny.

Maybe pick up some bonus seconds in the coming days?

Will try, but don't know how many opportunties there will be to do so. At the end of the day, a podium spot is a good result considering Andy's not at top form yet (which I'm reserving for Paris-Nice where we need a win). |

Volta a la Communitat Valencia
Stage 4: Lucena del Cid - Morella
3 steep hills midway through the race. We'll see if we can push the pace hard up those hills, shake people loose and maybe try for the sprint points after the 3rd hill. If we can create a break in the peloton on the climbs, or declines, so much the better.
There is a break of 6 today but they will be pretty ineffective as they are split across 3 groups. We push the pace up the three hills and stretch the pack thin but to no avail as it gains us nothing other than the pack looking pretty thin and worn out by the time we reach the sprint.
Haussler figures Boasson Hagen to be the strongest man today and grabs his wheel.
As the sprint starts, Haussler is still on Edvald's wheel and looking in decent position.
As we move under 1.5km to go, it is shaping up to me a four man battle between Edvald, Haussler, Pacheco (for Ceramica Panaria) and Scognamiglio (a past winner).
Under 1km to go and Haussler makes his move. However, Edvald kicks it into another gear and is pulling away. Haussler is now shooting to catch Pacheco for 2nd.
Edvald gets the win as Haussler pulls even with Pacheco. We missed taking a good picture at the finish line as it was close, but Haussler just got in ahead to take 2nd.

The Cobblestone season kicks off next with Omloop Het Volk and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Neither of these races are important to us, they are just pre-season warm-ups. Our cobblestone racers are low in fitness at this stage. Therefore, the updates on these races will be much shorter. |

[Volta a la Communitat Valencia
Stage 5: Castellon-Valencia
Flat stage today. Beppu goes in the early break, hoping to maybe eek out a stage win.
The break eventually is hauled in with Beppu being the last to be caught, 11 km from the line. We line up for a mass sprint. Haussler is a bit late to react to the train formation and ends up grabbing the wheel of Scognamiglio.
As the sprint starts, Scognamiglio seems to be moving in quicksand. Haussler is losing ground and has no choice but to attempt a long sprint.
Haussler begins to close the gap on Boasson Hagen and Gavazzi (with Manan in front of them), but it looks like it is probably too late.
Manan gets himself a stage win. Boasson Hagen comes second and, as a result of the bonus time, leapfrogs over Cunego in the overall standings to 3rd.
Kohl wins the tour on the back of one very strong stage. Schleck takes second but is looking stronger and stronger for Paris-Nice, where we really need him to show up.

Omloop Het Volk
Tom Boonen has won this race in three out of the last four years. He is here again and has to be considered the favorite. Also in strong contention: Cancellara, Trofimov, Nuyens and Hoste.
Nolf did fairly well in this race, manging to stay with a pack of 13 favorites until he started to fade in the last 10km or so. Nuyens was having a fantastic day and pulled away for an easy win.

some solid results in Valencia there...nice!
Hope you keep the motivation, it's a great read for me at work! After reading this story I actually restarted playing PCM07, it's a lot better than I remember. Or at least different enough from PCM08/09 to be refreshing - plus I can play on good graphics without long waiting times (always a bonus)
In short, keep it up...

Thanks. Definitely plan to keep it up, although there may be a slow down in activity this week as I am off to Bangkok.
PCM07 with a good database is not a bad little game. PCM06 with PPDB Giant is still very good as well, although I prefer the interface on PCM07.

Yup, the interface on PCM07 is much better than PCM06, although it feels a little too familiar playing PCM09 and nothing much changed, really. I actually really like the training system in 07 too, even if the one in 08/09 is more 'realistic'.
Have a good trip, looking forward to the next updates. |

Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne
Tom Boonen has dominated this race, having won four in a row. Nuyens showed his strength, however, with a dominating win at Omloop Het Volk. Usual cast of characters are here: Hoste, Cancellara, Trofimov, etc.
Discovery Channel managed to split the field, pushing the pace up the hills. A breakaway group of 9 was formed: 7 Discovery Channel riders along with Hoste and Van Avermaet, who were both too strong and soon rode away.
As fatigue kicked in, the group of 7 Discovery Channel riders narrowed to two: Meersman and Nolf. The lead over the pack hit as much as one minute when, suddenly, Pieter Jacobs rode away from the pack, blew past Nolf and Meersman, then blew past Hoste and Van Avermaet for the win. Meanwhile, the pack came charging hard as Nolf and Meersman neared the line. Nolf just managed to get across the line in 4th with Gusev sprinting just behind (and passing Meersman who finished 6th).
A picture was taken of Jacobs celebrating the win, but due to some kind of malfunction it did not show up.

Past Winners
2007: Stefano Garzelli (Acqua e Sapone)
2008: Yaroslav Popovych (Lampre)
2009: Yaroslav Popovych (Lampre)
2010: Eladio Sanchez (Lampre)
2011: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2012: Gabriele Tassinari (Saunier Duval)
Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia is our final warm-up for the Tirreno-Adriatico. The team racing here will look very similar to the team racing in a weeks time. Yaroslav Popovych is a two-time winner of this race but comes in here as a domestique and therefore doesn't expect to win. However, as this race favors someone with strong time trialing skills and some climbing ability, Jason Donald should have a good chance to win. Ardila is on the team for this race, however is slated to race in Paris-Nice so will drop out after 3 days, getting some valuable fitness in the process.
Kreuziger, Gesink and Petrov are all here. Will be interesting to see what their fitness is like as these are the guys we will be facing at Tirreno-Adriatico.
Leader: Jason Donald
Sprinter: Zhou Sui (not expecting much as still low fitness)
Free: Juan Van Heerden, Elia Casanova
Teammate: John Devine, Popo, Ardila and Garcia Viveros

Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia
Stage 1: Murcia - Torrepacheco
Flat stage for sprint finish. 6 man break goes out, split over 2 groups. As the lead increases, nobody seems to want to run it down so we go forward to do the work. Break is caught and it will be a sprint finish.
As the trains form, Van Heerden and Sui are both not only in a bad position, but looking pretty tired. It is obvious that many of the racers are in poor fitness as, despite this being a perfectly flat stage, over 30 racers have been dropped.
As the sprint opens, Discovery Channel has no chance. However, Unibet is looking very good. Emanuele Rizza has done an excellent job leading out Robert Forster and has established a large lead.
With his lead out man having done his job, Forster makes his move and powers forth.
Easy win for Forster, Rizza hangs on for 2nd to make a 1-2 Unibet punch.

Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia
Stage 2: Aguilas - Moratalla
Another stage for the sprinters, despite the hills near the end. We don't want to do the work today, so we try and send Ardila with the break. It doesn't work as Ardila is hauled back in. Eventually a group of 11 gets away. Unibet and Lampre are willing to do the work, so we let them.
It's a mass sprint and this time Van Heerden and Sui are in better position. Sui is looking tired (fitness issues) but Van Heerden seems strong.
As the sprint starts, Van Heerden is moving up. Rizza is out front acting as lead-out man for nobody. Where is Forster?
Van Heerden is looking very strong today and blows past everyone with only Rizza ahead of him.
Rizza has run out of gas and this is now looking like Van Heerden's day.
Van Heerden grabs the win. Great job by the young man!
