So it's warmer here than it is in Paris, the riders feel quite comfortable in this weather. Todays race begins here in Allauch and will end 130km later in Aubagne, the route is hilly and not too hilly for a sprint, which is my worry.
I've brought with me some guys who are good on the hills, we will attempt a breakaway on the final climb the Col de la Gineste and see what happens.
40 degrees was the temperature in Snapper point, here in Allauch it's only 13, as we get ready to begin the European cycling season.
We want a early breakaway, so we attacked with Veikkanen.
So, today's break is: Tchanliev (Club Bourgas), Veikkanen (FDJ), Kobzarenko (Team Type 1), Bowman (Kelly Benefit) and Loulet (AG2R)
2 riders join our breakaway and they are Seeldraeyers (Quick Step) and Sprick (bbox)
Now, a group of 5 others join, the gap is 3'45" and is rising with 88km to go.
Veikkanen calls for the team car
30km to go, the peloton is getting restless and attacks start to happen
Our tactic has played out, Joly has attacked on the Col de la Gineste. However the sprinters teams catch him after 2km, our breakaway is out there still!
I missed something here whilst attacking with Joly, the break split, i'm on the wrong side of the break, 10km to go!
Seeldraeyers or Kobzarenko, who won?, I think we need a photofinish!
I Still don't know who won? One things sure, it was very close.
Kobzarenko wins the Grand Prix D'Ouverture La Marseillaise.
RESULTS:
Top 10 - Grand Prix Cycliste D'Ouverture La Marseillaise
---
1 Valery Kobzarenko Team Type 1 3h29'28

4 Svetoslav Tchanliev Cycling Club Bourgas s.t.
5 Julien Loubet AG2R La Mondiale s.t.
6 Thomas Riber-Sellebjerg Team Capinordic s.t.
7 Dan Bowman Kelly Benefit Strategies + 31
8 Jussi Veikkanen Française des Jeux s.t.
9 Michael Kristensen Team Designa Køkken s.t.
10 Mathieu Sprick Bbox Bouygues Télécom s.t.
Francaise Des Jeux
--
8 Jussi Veikkanen Française des Jeux s.t.
57 Rémy Di Gregorio Française des Jeux s.t.
65 Yoann Offredo Française des Jeux s.t.
92 Benoit Vaugrenard Française des Jeux s.t.
99 Sébastien Joly Française des Jeux s.t.
103 Sandy Casar Française des Jeux s.t.
2 good things happened here
1) I achieved my sponsor goal, top 10.
2) All riders finished in the Peloton.
Slightly upset we didn't win, it could have been different if i didn't focus on Joly.
At the same time we are quite happy with this, the sponsors phoned me and said they are very pleased!
So, from here to stay south for the Etoile Besseges in a few days time, i'm looking forward to it.
---
Next post: I'll post the profiles of all the stages in my mini-preview of the race.

I'm staying in Marseille still, quite a nice hotel this one. Anyway the organisers of the Etoile de Besseges just sent over all the race profiles (again!).
I'm thinking of sending mostly the same squad as the GP D'Ouverture, there's not too far to travel, and they have all had some sort of racing this season. However i want to bring some riders with 0 race days too.
So, the decisive stage of this race is certainly Stage 3 into Les Salles du Gardon, i'm thinking a good climber and descender will attack on the climb and win at the finish.
Other than that, they are all for the sprinters. Also all the stages are quite short, the longest is 139km.

Stage wins mostly, hopefully we could hold the jersey for a while.
After the giro we'll think about the tour i think.
But they are our likely targets.

4th February 2009
--
Sitting here in Le Grau du Roi close to the start/finish line, i'm continually thinking "Who is my leader here, do i go for the sprinter, or the hilly rider. The hilly rider has 1 stage to get a lead, the sprinter has 4 chances to shine"
In the end, i decided both can have protection and we'll see what happens.
Setting out from here though, Hutarovic will be our leader for the day.
Let's see how the stage pans out...
Here's Duval, we've attacked with him today.
But here is the tete de la course Petrov and Sinkeldam.
The second group on the road has caught the leaders
Bunch Packed.
Here is Hutarovic, our sprinter today, he's safe in the peloton.
10km to go: CRASH of Jegou, Sinkeldam, LeMonie, Hivert, Calabria and Mangel.
Once the crashes start, they can't stop. This time it's Scheirlinckx, Persson, Gautier, Eltink, Van Impe, Pardilla.
With 800m to go Barbe crashes!
Usov of Cofidis gets the win, after i messed up the leadout, i said sorry to Hutarovic.
Usov gets his time on the podium
The winner of stage 1 automaticaly gets the yellow jersey.

For the Giro I think you can have a good chance if you bring Hutarovich and maybe Chavanel, plus some breakaway riders like Roy. |

Chavenel is surely going to be saved for the tour e_hagen as he is the best sprinter and could get a top 3 in a stage or two. I think breakaways are your best chance. Lets just hope lpr dont sit on the front every stage like irl |

Lets not forget in this DB i have to apply for a wildcard to the Giro and Vuelta.
I'm automaticly in the tour, if i wasn't, i'd have to apply for that too.

Why do you have to apply for the Giro and Vuelta?
And, are there some Protour races you don't think you will be participating in? |

I would go with Hutarovich in the Giro, and after the Tour save Chavanel for the Vuelta. |

I reckon its because cofidis eskaltel etc missed the giro as it is not worth it for them. Therefore you can keep it realistic and save riders like irl. e.g. cofidis focused on the french races rather than the giro |
