I don't get the question. Do you wan't to know the stats of the best riders, or just Ginanni? |

Giro d'Italia - Abandoning the race
Today, I abandoned the Giro. I had planned this with Savio, but I can’t say I’m not disappointed. I had really hoped I could do something with this Giro, but it turned out to be a big flop for me. If it will be a flop for my team, it depends. We’re not even half-through the Giro, and with Leipheimer out of form, Simoni has a fair chance on a podium, and maybe even a win? He’s a better climber than Kirchen, and about equal with Schleck in the mountains. He’s also a better time trialist.
So now I will just sit on my ass and watch the Giro from my sofa. I’ll tell you have it went after the Giro.
Oh, and by the way, Mazzanti won today's stage after sitting in the break the whole day. Simoni was third, beating Schleck in the sprint and took some bonus seconds.
Francesco out.

LeMond vs. Fignon all over again!
Yo folks! The Giro is over, and what a race it has been! All happened the last week, after I had abandoned.
Let me tell you how it unfolded: Simoni attacked in the downhill section on stage 10, and got a few seconds to Schleck and Kirchen. Schleck still in Maglia Rosa. Then Simoni took time on Schleck in the TT, and they finished together in the hilly stages, but Schleck took some bonus seconds.
Then, on one of the toughest stages, the one to Monte Petrano, Bruseghin went in the break and was first over the two first climbs. Gibo attacked on the last climb, and took Maglia Rosa from Schleck, before Schleck would take it back on Blockhaus. Gilberto took some time on the stage to Vesuv, and Schleck had a lead of 11 seconds before the last time trial stage. Simoni wasn’t much better than Schleck at TT, and it was only 11 seconds up. Would he succeed to take his third win?
The stage started, and when Schleck had the fastet time at the first checkpoint, we were starting to get nervous. Gibo took some time on Schleck the next kilometers, but it was for from enough. Simoni rolled in at 28. Now we started to watch Schleck, who had started half-an-minute before.
And he didn’t make it! Simoni won, he took enough time, and after 21 extremely tough stages, only ten seconds divided these two athletes. It was LeMond/Fignon all over again!
Final GC:
1 Gilberto Simoni Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli 84h23'36

8 Michele Scarponi Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli 29
9 Sergei Ivanov Team Katusha 27

And me? Well, I’ll head off to race Memorial Marco Pantani, just to show my respect to “the pirate”, my hero from when I was a kid. Then the national championships. After that I’ll take a break before I’m back racing the Italian classics at the fall, and preparing for the worlds. |

Memorial Marco Pantani
What the hell, was the race director drunk or something? Half of the race weren’t on roads, but in the forest. I came here to ride a road race, and now this?
Well look at this! In this race we’re even allowed to fly! The fight against doping may be won, but the fight against gravity is on-going!
At the end, the race was won by the Norwegian Otto Eikeseth. I won the sprint in the pack. One thing is for sure, I will never ride this race again!
Results:
1 Otto Eikeseth Team Sparebanken Vest 1h35'03
2 Michele Gaia CSF Group - Navigare s.t.
3 Bartosz Huzarski ISD s.t.
4 Aristide Ratti CarmioOro - A-Style s.t.
5 Vitali Kondrut ISD s.t.
6 Giovanni Visconti ISD s.t.
7 Matthew Rowe Candi TV - Pinarello RT s.t.
8 Oscar Gatto ISD s.t.
9 Bert Roesems Cinelli - OPD s.t.
10 Tiziano Dall'Antonia CSF Group - Navigare s.t.
...
22 Francesco Ginanni Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli + 4'30 |
