It was another cloudy spring day, with rain from time to time. Racing in the area just west of Bilbao. First Quinn Simmons and later Juan Pedro López took part in one of the many failed breakaway attempts, both getting 3 KoM points in the process.
All the top riders were in the first group of more than 50 riders, fighting for the stage win on the short ramp up to the finish line. Benoît Cosnefroy wins a photo finish, taking the stage on front of Jakob Fuglsang. Bauke Mollema finished 29th in the same time.

Very nice to see how Stuyven bounced back there. Hopefully he and Pedersen can do well on the road to Roubaix. |

Four riders formed the morning breakaway, and although a rider like Odd Christian Eiking might theoretically pose a threat, they never got enough time to make it realistic. Toms Skujinš and Bauke Mollema started the final climb in front on the very narrow road.
Sadly, they did not have the power to hold back the top favourites and fell back rapidly. Esteban Cháves won the stage in front of Egan Bernal and Jonas Vingegaard. Bauke Mollema 24th losing 1’03. Egan Bernal now lead the race with 6” to Vingegaard. Bauke Mollema 24th at 1’32”

Wow, wouldn't expect Mollema to lose so much time on this relatively short climb... Looks like he just lacks the punch to keep up with the big guns.
On the other hand, great result by Stuyven in RvV, too bad he couldn't crack the podium!

Ya, the climb turned out to be harder than expected, he should have saved a bit more to reach the finish in better shape, limiting the loss. In RvV Sonny Colbrelli played his cards well, but he also seemed to have a very good day.

Several crashes took down many GC riders today, most important KoM leader and 3rd in GC Esteban Cháves, crashing on the steep descent from cat.2 Jaizkibel losing 1'43”. 4th in GC Primož Roglic took the hardest blow, losing devastating 15’32”. Matteo Trentin withdrew with a broken hand.
Jai Hindley won the stage in front of Maximilian Schachmann and Ben O'Connor. Bauke Mollema finished 14th in the same time as the winner. Egan Bernal leads the race with 6” to Jonas Vingegaard. Bauke Mollema now 12th at 1’32”

The first breakaway with Tom Skujinš, Brandon McNulty, Thomas De Gendt, Héctor Sáez and Fausto Masnada was caught after just 20 km. Quinn Simmons counter attacked with Mattia Cattaneo and Edwin Ávila. After a few km the group was extended with Alex Dowsett and Garikoitz Bravo.
Quinn Simmons took 3 points in the KoM, enough to take the overall lead in the category. Despite heavy rain on most of the route, only one GC riders was down, it was Maximilian Schachmann, but he did not lose time. The group was never caught and Quinn Simmons had a perfect race and outsmarted the opponents with a late attack form about 3 km. He won the stage in front of Edwin Ávila and Garikoitz Bravo. Saving Basque Country for the team.

We get another very wet race day in Basque Country. The stage will end with the renown Arrate climb. Quinn Simmons joins the breakaway to get as many KoM points as he can.
With just 102 km the stage is very explosive, constant attacks from top riders bring back the breakaway early and the favourite group leading the stage reduced for every km raced. Bauke Mollema the only rider from Trek – Segafredo making it over Azurti (cat.1) after just 22 km.
The stage was won by Emanuel Buchmann, with 32” to a group of 8 riders. There were huge gabs today, Bauke Mollema finished 15th losing 5’38. Egan Bernal won Vuelta al País Vasco in front of Jonas Vingegaard and Miguel Ángel López. Bauke Mollema 12th Overall.

17 riders formed the morning breakaway, the peloton was quite fast and they only got around 1’30” when they hit the first cobbled sector “Troisvilles to Inchy”.
Koen De Kort crashed, while attempting to get new water supply. He never came back.
The original breakaway was caught, allowing stronger riders to attack the peloton. With about 50 km left 13 riders including most to the favourites formed a leading group. Jasper Stuyven, Mads Pedersen and Edward Theuns sitting in the pursuit about 1'30" behind. Mads had rather bad legs and was the first to drop, whereas Theuns had a fine day helping Stuyven to close in. In the end it was Jasper Stuyven and Sonny Colbrelli chasing the riders in front.
11 riders sprinted for victory at Vélodrome André-Pétrieux in Roubaix. Quite surprisingly Cofidis’s Christophe Laporte won the race. Jasper Stuyven finished 13th and Edward Theuns 18th.

The morning break was just three riders, Brent Bookwalter from BikeExchange, Sam Oomen from Jumbo-Visma and Merhawi Kudus from Astana.
With 158 km left our team leader Toms Skujinš crash, he comes back but we need a new leader. Winning Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta just a week ago, Gianluca Brambilla was chosen.
It comes down to a reduced sprint between 14 riders. Won by Diego Ulissi. Gianluca Brambilla does very well finishing 4th. A great result considering the circumstances.

The morning break was composed of Alpecin’s Tobias Bayer, Qhubeka’s Mauro Schmid and Cofidis’ Victor Lafay. They held a maximum of about 3’40.
With about 75 km left, a huge crash in the pack took down team leader Bauke Mollema as well as Toms Skujinš and Mattias Skjelmose. Effectively crushing Trek’s possibility of a top result.
The race was won by World Champion Julian Alaphilippe from a relatively large group. Our best was Kenny Elissonde as 24th.

Awesome performance by Brambilla in AGR! Flèche was really, really bad luck (you're playing with a pretty high crash ratio it seems...), hopefully everyone stays on their bike in LBL now!

Thanks for reply. Really great race by Brambilla. My crash ratio is just 0.7, so guess it was just bad luck.
