My first day leading the race and I was relishing the thought. Finally some luck had come up for me and I was going to enjoy every minute of it. The second stage was pretty much flat so it would be me against the specialist sprinters. I knew I would have a tough job ahead of me and I would have to finish the stage well with some quality sprinters in the field.
I was well protected by my team in the bunch and as race leader I was well respected as well. I made conversation with two Tinkoff riders, Pavel Brutt and Mikhael Ignatiev, and after all the compliments we discussed russian cycling and the grand tours. I also reminisced with Mikha about racing against him in the points race at the World Junior Track Championships. He dominated there and in Athens he dominated as well, lapping the field 3 times to claim gold. I felt great in my golden fleece.
The break had achieved a handsome lead so I decided that the team needed to work to bring them back and sent them to the front. The gap became manageable when the sprinters teams took over. However, I didn't realise how short the distance to the finish was and was fighting to the front as the break was duking it out with the pack with 3km to go.
It was mental up front, the pace incredibly high as we tried to catch the break. Too many men were fighting for position near the head of the group and it was bunching dangerously through corners, causing everyone to sprint like maniacs out of the exits. 6 riders crashed just behind me, including my team-mate Robby Muel. Finally the break were caught and I was starting to get a good position. A shattered Adria Mobil rider was drifting back from the escapees, his spirit broken. The pack were travelling at more than 60kph and he couldn't achieve that. He slid towards me. I should've dominated him and held my position but I let him too close.
I hit the deck. My hip crunched. I layed still.

The doctors say it doesn't look good. The hip joint is completely shattered and it's going to need some serious reconstruction. I'm worried.
My mates have been in from DFL and they're a bit shocked, not least at seeing their own mortality and the danger that lurks round every corner and in every bunch sprint. One momentary lapse of judgement or concentration that could end their career. But they've been nice about it and at least they're here. Jeremy Vennell won the last stage of the Brixia Tour by more than ten minutes and moved up to 9th on GC so it was a very successful race for the team. I wished them good luck for the season and they were gone. |
