I've salvaged my season.
When Phil Griffiths' wife died he couldn't continue in cycling. A sad moment but one mans loss is another mans gain. And, for once, it turned out to be mine.
His Pinarello team needed another manager so, with the season already started I jumped to their 'rescue'. My new job starts at the Bikeline 2-Day.
I'm back in business. |

Pinarello 2008
We have a strong squad for 2008, compared to our budget, mainly built around Russell Downing. He had a tremendous season last year in light of his visa problems and wants to build on it this year. We have sponsors with the UK distributors of Pinarello bikes. The aim is to completely dominate the British and Irish calendar and maybe make an effect in Europe.
Here is our squad:
As you can see, there are some experienced hands in the squad, namely Downing and Elliot, intertwined with an abundance of young talent. It will hopefully make for a good team and should blossom in future years.
Here's a rundown, rider by rider:
Leaders
Russell Downing
Russ is a former British champion and is still on the up. He has been unfortunate with his career, including his I-team Nova squad folding mid-season in 2002, being involved with the Linda Mcartney saga and, more recently, being involved with the saga of my team folding around me. But, luckily, we joined up again here, where I can hope to unlock his full potential. He is a fast finisher, honed on the track, and is also good in the hills. Maybe time is running out, but he can still make it big.
Malcolm Elliot
30 and you think you're too old to race? Take a leaf out of 47 year-old Malcolm Elliot's book. A former points winner in the Vuelta and a 3rd in Amstel Gold are just two of the big results on the glittering palmares of one of Britain's best ever cyclists. And he's still going strong. He won the Havant International UCI GP in 2003 in his comeback year and never looked back. He took stages of the Ras and the Girvan, as well as the world masters road race, the Shay Elliot Memorial, the National CIrcuit Race series, the Newprot Nocturne and the East Midlands Cicle Classic. This season he wants to keep winning before the hand of time creeps on him. Again.
Lieutenants
Fredrik Johansson
Our young Swede is a big talent and already quite an accomplished time-triallist. He hopes to become Swedish champion soon but will face a stern test from Gustav Larsson and Thomas Lokvist. He could become a strong all-rounder and will look to impress on the continent this year, as he misses warmer weather and may look for a new team at the end of the year. We'll see.
Tom Southam
Tom looked to be one of Britain's greatest talents about 5 years ago. But it went a bit off the rails for him. However, I think I can help to ressurect his career and take him to the top of the pile. His strengths lie in time-trialling but he could become a stage racer or a rider in the hilly classics. He's as strong as an ox and will want to reflect that in his results this year.
Team-mates
Tom Murray
A guy who could be a really good sprinter in the future. May even get a chance to shine this year.
Peter Williams
Similar to Murray but not as good.
Matthew Kipling
Similar to Williams but a worse climber.
Andrew Roche
Irish. A domestique, content to work for his betters.
Lee Davis
Contented in the twilight of his career, happy just to ride a bike.
Ben Price
Absolutely Shit. Can't wait to get rid of the bugger.
Our goals from Pinarello UK for the season are as follows:
As I said, mostly British and Irish based.
We start with Bikeline 2-Day, where Russ and the team will hope to open our account. |

My first race in charge is the BikeLine 2-Day, a 3 stage race around Merseyside and North Wales. A short TT and 2 pretty flat stages through the Valleys make up the race. Russ will look to hold his own in the TT and take the win through time bonuses in the sprints.
The TT was a short blast with not much to say. We looked for a win through Freddy Johansson .....
... but it didn't materialise. He came 7th behind Ben Jaqcues-Maynes of the American Bissell team.
Russ put in a satisfactory performance to lose only 13 seconds to the winner.
This afternoon, Russ will look for the win in the sprint. |

This race was never going to be as interesting, especially for the viewer, as the Tour de France, but it means a lot to us. I want to start my role with a win so this is quite important for me.
The inevitable break went in this flat 59km stage but it was hauled back and, going into the sprint all our sprinters were well positioned.
Russ stayed in the shelter as the lead-out men gave their final efforts. Murray and Elliot were trying to follow wheels to a high finish. Suddenly, a gap opened up and Russell 'Fonzy' Downing made his move.
And that gap was all he needed; for the stage and for the yellow jersey.

Wrexham. Home of Fenns Moss, beautiful churches, magnificient countryside and, for Britain, quite a few hills. But we don't go over these hills. Todays stage is 8 laps of a scenic circuit but it is pretty much 100% flat, bar the odd bump. Russ needs to bring out his sprint.
We needed to work to brink back the break today, so we couldn't provide a great lead-out for Russ. However, when a group of 6 gapped the pack through a chicane he worked hard enough to be in it.
He was at the back of the group though and, when Wesley Sulzberger opened up his sprint, Fonzy was boxed in. Sulzberger opened a gap.
Russell fought back and was accelerating up to the young Australian very fast in the dying metres....
But he couldn't quite make it.

The Tour of the Reservoir dawned unusually bright and sunny on this hilly coastline where we loop around for the whole day. The rays were strong and it lifted everyone's mood before a course almost perfect for Russell.
The two main hills later on may make a big difference.
Inevitably there was a break, a group of overexcited Brits and rubbish foreigners trying to get their sponsors names on cycling.tv or get that elusive first win. Quite a few were in it to win it.
They built up quite a gap while we foolishly relaxed in the peloton. Russell had another foolish moment at a crucial time. On the final hill before the finish, in an attempt to catch the break, a few of the favourites attacked. W
While Russell was drinking.
They were away. And Russ wasn't.
In a frantic attempt to chase, Russell set off on his own, after 2 of his remaining 4 team-mates (2 lost contact on the hill) crashed.
He rode flat out and by the finishing circuit had just managed to catch the attackers from the peloton.
But the remnants of the break were still ahead and it looked increasingly unlikely that he would catch them.
As James Jackson wound up the sprint at the front of the break it was a safe bet on the break.
But, with 50m left, Fonzy appeared at the back of the group. He looked shattered. But determined. Surely not though. He would have to make up and go past a 10m gap inside 50, no 45, no 40. He gave it a shot. With 10m to go he was on Jackson's wheel. He couldn't go past. Could he?
Oh yes he could!
Awe-inspiring from Russ.

We continue on home(ish) soul in Ireland for the Shay Elliot Memorial. A hilly course, and I actually mean it, is on for today and some stronger teams include Rabobank and Skil-Shimano. We want the win.
A strong break, with most teams represent, was a real trouble in my mind, as they took quick seconds on the flats early on.
It became even more of a trouble with 50k to go as the gap had reached 7 minutes. I thought that the big teams would chase the breaks and let their favourites do the talking but it was to the contrary so I decided on a flat-out pursuit.
Approaching the final hills in the last 15km the gap was 2.5 minutes. The guys were shattered so I told Russ to attack, his only hope being to pick through the splintering break ahead.
He flew over the hills and took many risks on the descents and, with help from other riders trying to reach the leaders, and failing, he bridged the gap and made it to the front.
It was at the front he encountered another problem. He was on German sprinter Sebastien Siedler's wheel. Siedler, who has countless sprint victories, which got him hired for Team Milram, and was a World Champion on the track.
Could Russ, who had single-handedly just closed a huge gap on the leaders really compete with a great cyclist like Siedler.
And then some!

We return to England and to the home of a pie, Melton Mowbray! This is England's cobbled classic and it's dirt roads coincide with 'La Doyenne' abroad, where Davide Rebellin is looking for his 3rd Ardennes victory this year. The hills and the off-road sections will keep us occupied today.
Another race, another break, and finally we had someone in it. Peter Williams followed a move off the front and is looking strong, not wasting any energy in this eleven-strong escapade.
For once, though, other teams were chasing and it looked like they'd get brought back in. But it seemed like the others had tired their resources when the chase stopped, with the gap at a tantalising 20 seconds, instead of helping them reach the wheel of one of our riders, Russell attacked to bridge to the break.
He managed to reach the leaders and settled down, wheel-sucking cheekily.
I tried to work a 1-2, sending Peter off the front.
He couldn't escape their clutches and was just left to work on the front. I shouted at Russell to attack and, as he passed him, at Peter to slow. It worked. Russell got away and no one was quick enough to chase him.
He got a race-winning gap.
Behind, Peter proved what a rider he was, and a possible successor for Russell when he took second to round off a great day for us.
Great teamwork and a bit of tactical nous tend to pay off. |
