Etolie de Besseges - Stage 1
6 February 2009
This French stage race would be the final preparation for our Tour of California team, so we were looking for some strong performances here.
Tejay Van Garderen was our man in the breakaway, but with no intermediate sprints of any kind, it was the stage win he was going for.
But with the sprinters wanting a strong start, their teams reeled him in.
In the sprint, and Steve Cozza had a fall, but was safely back on his bike to stay in the pack
But it was Fabio Sacchi who looked strongest, and Juan van Heerden pushed him all the way, but couldn't grab onto the stage win. Tyler Farra got 3rd simply by falling the Gerolsteiner rider's wheel.
But a great start for the team, with Juan picking up the U25 jersey

Etolie de Besseges - Stage 2
7 February 2009
More flat territory, but with 2 sets of mountain points, Tejay van Garderen was off and after that climber's jersey.
Tejay grabs the points and the climber's jersey
But then it all went horribly wrong. As the sprint was beginning to wind up, some very strong crosswinds began to build up, and it was a fight for the peloton to stay together. A fight we lost, as the pack split, and only Juan Van Heerden was in the front group of 32. The rest of the team would lose over a minute!
Ivan Dominguez was just too strong in the front group, as he took a convincing win

Etolie de Besseges - Stage 3
8 February
Time for Tom Danielson to shine, this was the hilly stage everyone had been waiting for.
Tejay Van Garderen went out to soak up the climber points, but I also sent Dan Martin with him to help him out - 3 days in a row in a break is tough
35km to go, and Tom Danielson was forced to match the attack by Fabio Sacchi - a bit early for my liking, but this was the move to go with
With 13 riders in this main bunch, Tom attacked again and again to try and shake off a few of the riders - this was his only chance
And it worked - a downhill into the finish meant once a few riders had a gap, they'd stay away, and Tom came in 2nd behind Thomas Voeckler to go 5th in the general classification
An even bigger surprise was Tejay, he was incredible today, he stayed with the chase group to go 7th in the GC! He really looks like he'll develop into a great rider, with him and Dan Martin, we've got some of the best youngsters in the world right now
Stage

Etoile de Besseges - Stage 4
9 February
Dan Martin was sent into the break to mark anybody close to Tejay's climber's jersey - nobody was, so he just took it easy
The sprint went bad for us. We came nowhere as Bastien Delrot surprised everybody by going on Cancellara-esque attack and pulling it off
1 Bastien Delrot Roubaix Lille Métropole 2h53'58
2 Remmert Wielinga Team CSC - Saxo Bank s.t.
3 Patrice Halgand Crédit Agricole s.t.
4 Sébastien Joly Française des Jeux s.t.
5 Kenny Van der Schueren Cycle Collstrop s.t.

Etoile de Besseges - Stage 5
10 February
The final stage, final chance to do something. We had 2 riders sitting pretty in the top 10, and we also held the climber's jersey, so it had been a good race for us.
Manuel Lloret had been looking pretty bored during this race, so I let him go into the break of 13.
As we neared the finish, it became obvious the break would make it. Manuel was no way the best sprinter, so tried as hard as he could to shake off the others - and a nicely placed attack with only a few kilometres to go broke it down to 3 riders.
As the sprint began, Manuel pulled away, and began to ease up. But Giovanni Bernaudeau was coming back strong, and Manuel hadn't noticed him. I was yelling as hard as I could for Manuel to sprint, everyone could see the Bouygues rider coming, except for Manuel, who raised his arms up in victory...
To say Manuel was devastated would be like saying Hitler was a nice guy.

Tour of California Preview
This is the highlight of our season, and I'm determined to succeed here. Our performances so far haven't been promotion material, but with riders hitting their peaks, we're looking good here.
Last season with Health Net, and the opening prologue was sensational for the team - after that, not so good. They're here against me this year, and I really want to beat Mike - I'm friendly towards the riders but not to him, and I'm going to show him that it was me who was responsible for that prologue success.
The competition this year though is a lot better. Last year, Jens Voigt took victory, with Casar and Gusev finishing off the podium. This year, you can see everyone' buying into the growing American market, we're up against Ricco, Gerdemann, Cavendish, Cancellara, Schleck...
Garmin - Chipotle powered by H30 team
Team Leader: Tom Danielson
Having picked up 5th overall plus a stage podium in France, TD is ready to go up against the best the ProTour has to offer
Super-domestiques: Manuel Lloret, Trent Lowe and Ryder Hesjedal
These 3 will be totally devoted to helping out TD, their sole aim is to do whatever he needs of them
Time-trialist: David Zabriskie
2 time trials he has the potential to win, but Cancellara is the best, and it'll be tough
Domestique/Escapee: Dan Martin
The young Irishman has looked promising in training, he's ready to make his mark
Sprinter: Juan van Heerden
Make or break time for Juan. He's been sprinting OK, but we need him to be at his best here
Water Boy: Tejay van Garderen
It was a tough choice between Tejay and Tyler Farrar. But our aim is the Gc, and we already have Juan, so with Tejay's performances in France, he has earned his place here

Tour of California - Stage 1
17 February - Palo Alto-Stanford University ITT
You know they say lightning doesn't strike twice. Well, for me it has.
The team knew this course even better than the back of their hand, we'd been round it too many times really, everyone knew exactly what to do, where to push it, where to ride tempo, the best race line.
We took the top 6 placings. All our staff and fans went slightly crazy. We went 30 seconds quicker than John Murphy did last year with Health net, if lasts years performance was impressive, this one was off the chain!
David Zabriskie gives it everything to take victory

GP Mediterranean Update from Matt White
Hi boss, knew you weren't looking for a result here, but the team pulled it out of the bag with a great race. Here's the stage-by-stage account, as you asked:
Stage 1: Thor Hushovd looked unbeatable, won by a couple of bike lengths
Stage 2: The God of Thunder took another victory
Stage 3: Crucial stage today, and David Millar rose to the challenge. He got in the front group of 3 when it mattered, and sprinted to 3rd to move 3rd in the GC
Stage 4: Roy Sentjens goes solo and holds off the pack
Stage 5: That Norwegian sprinter annoyed the team here, he took his 3rd stage win, but with the time bonus, leapfrogged into the win, pushing David down to 4th.
1 Thor Hushovd Crédit Agricole 14h09'42
2 Mario Aerts Silence - Lotto + 6
3 John Gadret AG2R La Mondiale + 14
4 David Millar Garmin - Chipotle powered by H30 + 18
5 Murilo Fischer Cofidis, Le Crédit par Téléphone + 39
So a great result here, David isn't even in great form, so looking promising. Apart from our 2 neo-pros, Jones Summer and Mordon McCree, I really don't think they are up to the challenge of pro racing. Yet.
