It is 17°C sunny and very little wind.

Simon Geschke (CCC) start a solo attempt, when he passes the first KoM climb, he got 5’05”, at this point the peloton are still having an easy ride and all of our focus riders are safely in the pack.

i.imgur.com/DosX57A.jpg

Also the otherwise hard cat.1 ridden in a moderate pace with Simon Geschke having more than 4 minutes when the peloton passes the top, but on the last 500 meters the strong puncher Jonathan Hivert (Direct Energie) accelerates and get some seconds.
De Gendt, Monfort and Bennati sitting quite low and might get in trouble if this is where at tempo gets hot.

i.imgur.com/IOe88KH.jpg

Turns out that Hivert was only looking for the KoM points and things settle down after the climb. In the meantime Team Sunweb have decided to take the lead, Søren Kragh Andersen now part of Sunwebs domestic setting the pace.

Alexander Kristoff sprint for the points on the first intermediate, taking the points Geschke left over.

i.imgur.com/yPINDr8.jpg

Geschke got 2’15” over the 3rd KoM, Søren Kragh passing 2nd still leading the pack.

Again Kristoff attacked for the points and as last time Christophe Laporte beats Sagan for 3nd. Now the pack has visual contact with Geschke.

Kragh still part of the pursuit, Dennis and Spilak right behind the spearhead, Molard just 4-5 riders further back, same goes for Fraile but he is acting as protection for Fuglsang. De Gendt, Monfort and especially Bennati sitting dangerously low.

Krists Neilands (Israël - Cycling Academy) attacks and close the gap to Geschke.

The duo keep as distance of about 40” for a while after the sprint, but the fight for positioning in the peloton leading up to the two small hills coming up with some 14 km to the line, increases the pace in the pack and the breakaway was reeled in.

Starting the hills we got Dennis and Spilak very well placed inside top 15, also Molard and Fraile in what we can call the first part of the pack. I little further back Kragh but it is still De Gendt, Monfort and Bennati in most critical danger of missing a cut.

i.imgur.com/blQNMj7.jpg

On the final downhill with just 6.2 km to the line we get a huge crash in the pack.
Dennis and Spilak the only two focus riders sitting ahead of where the crash happens, a total of 56 riders completely escapes the havoc. Molard and Fraile directly hit by the original crash now down at the road.

Monfort blocked but steer clear and continues as one of the first blocked riders, while De Gendt, Bennati and Kragh crash into the pile of riders on the ground and also ends on the tarmac.

i.imgur.com/klONHFL.jpg

Casper Pedersen opens the sprint for Michael Matthews, but Peter Sagan has found his wheel.
With 300 meters left it between Matthews and Sagan, side by side with some distance to the next rider.
Simon Spilak (left) and a few riders behind him Rohan Dennis in the mix for a top 15 or better.

i.imgur.com/h4yqLmz.jpg

Peter Sagan wins in Sisteron, Michael Matthews 2nd and Roberto Ferrari (UAE) 3rd.

Again Spilak best of our focus riders as 13th and a few meters further back Dennis 21th, the only two making stage points today, Maxime Monfort the only other focus rider not losing time.

Søren Kragh Andersen, Daniele Bennati, Rudy Molard, Omar Fraile and Thomas De Gendt all loses 2’26”

Spilak's the gift that keeps on giving. He has the chance to hang onto yellow after the next stage, too, though with the tricky finale time gaps are likely.

It is 16°C slightly clouded with very little wind, but we expect winds up to 20 km/h in the mountains.

Thomas De Gendt opens the stage with a strong acceleration just as the flag drops on the small hill in the outskirts of Sisteron

More riders attack, from the peloton a group of 6 closing in on De Gendt, Giulio Ciccone, Greg Van Avermaet, Jaime Rosón, Lilian Calmejane, Nicolas Edet and Omar Fraile

Soon also KoM leader Simon Geschke and Krists Neilands joins the breakaway. Right from the start it comes clear that Olympic gold winner Greg Van Avermaet does not take any part in the workload constantly at the back of the group.

We have a huge of crash in the pack, Simon Spilak and Søren Kragh Andersen down losing a little more than 2 minutes to the peloton, also Maxime Monfort, Daniele Bennati and Rohan Dennis caught behind and loses about a minute.

Carapaz abandon the race. The situation with about 150 km left:

i.imgur.com/CcEwKEr.jpg

The pace is not very high at this section and slowly the crashed riders come back to the pack, Katusha- Alpecin off course sends a few riders back to help the race leader.

When the peloton starts the first challenge Col De Luens (cat.2) all our focus riders back in well placed in the group. Distance now reduced to 2’35”

Lilian Calmejane opens the KoM sprint, but Greg Van Avermaet who haven’t worked at all up to this point takes the KoM, a strategy that won’t buy him any new friends in the WT circus for sure. Thomas De Gendt 2nd also takes some nice points, while KoM leader Simon Geschke can’t keep up losing 1’15 on the climb.

i.imgur.com/Leg9BF8.jpg

After the KoM we see some frustration with the fact that Van Avermaet will not take part in the workload necessary to keep the distance to the pack, the result is that Lilian Calmejane attacks and with him also Omar Fraile, Giulio Ciccone, Nicolas Edet and Krists Neilands

i.imgur.com/nPHUeqB.jpg

The four riders in front get a clear gap to the trio behind and by now Simon Geschke at 2’20.

Destiny strikes Van Avermaet and he crash in a sharp corner on the descent, very bad luck for Thomas De Gendt and Jaime Rosón who also hit the tarmac. The trio now at 1’38” the pack at 2’44

i.imgur.com/s9fjGO7.jpg

Just as the peloton is about to start the 2nd KoM climb Col Bas (cat.2), we get another huge crash in the corner swinging into the climb. As the breakaway passes the KoM, left take a look at what the effect of the crash was.

Worst hit was a group of 47 riders, at 4’00”, Boasson Hagen, Michael Woods, Enrico Gasparotto, Maximilian Schachmann, Diego Ulissi and white jersey leader Egan Bernal

At 3’20 a group of 43 riders, most notably Michael Valgren but also our focus riders, Rudy Molard, Maxime Monfort and Daniele Bennati

At 2’40” the pack with Race leader Simon Spilak, Daniel Martin, Michael Matthews, Michal Kwiatkowski, Peter Sagan and out focus riders Rohan Dennis and Søren Kragh.

At 2’03 Van Avermaet, De Gendt, Jaime Rosón and Simon Geschke

Lilian Calmejane takes the KoM in front of Omar Fraile and Giulio Ciccone, Krists Neilands lost a few seconds on the last part of the climb.

i.imgur.com/pgFXqxQ.jpg

Group Van Avermaet/De Gendt was reeled in but the five riders left in the breakaway keep the distance relative constant passing the next KoM with 2’23”, again Lilian Calmejane first over the top.

Most of the crashed rider got back and four of our focus riders ok placed in the pack, Rudy Molard, Rohan Dennis, Søren Kragh and Simon Spilak. Maxime Monfort, Daniele Bennati and Thomas De Gendt also in the pack but sitting dangerously low.

i.imgur.com/eLBEV4S.jpg

Horriable new again with a crash in the pack in the downhill, with 40 km left it might well be very hard to get back this time. Michael Woods, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Michael Valgren involved in the crash and we also got focus riders caught Monfort, De Gendt and Bennati.

Lilian Calmejane takes another KoM win, he is now virtual KoM leader. Distance to the pack 2’26, and after the long downhill Lilian Calmejane also takes the final KoM (cat.1) cementing his KoM lead, it looks like we will continue alone attempting a solo stage win.

There is 49 riders in the pack when they climb the cat.1, somewhat surprisingly all of our focus riders made it back. Wout Poels have attacked from the pack.

5.7 km left, Omar Fraile has moved in on Lilian Calmejane.

i.imgur.com/tx2GlUp.jpg

3 km left, there has been some attacking from the peloton when the brought back Wout Poels about a kilometer ago, teammate Michal Kwiatkowski immediately countered, now in E2 with Giulio Ciccone at 53”

In E3 at 1’10 Simon Spilak, Daniel Martin and Jakob Fuglsang have picked up Nicolas Edet

E4 at 1’41” Rohan Dennis, Peter Kennaugh and Michael Matthews

At 1’51” 13 riders besides Sagan mainly GC contenders Wout Poels, Thibaut Pinot, Primoz Roglic, Simon Yates, Romain Bardet, Bob Jungels, Rafal Majka, Richie Porte etc.

Lilian Calmejane leads all the way to the finish line and even though it was close Lilian Calmejane wins the stage in Vence in from of Omar Fraile

i.imgur.com/Lk4DZjG.jpg

At +31” Michal Kwiatkowski beat Simon Spilak for third, Rohan Dennis 5th Daniel Martin 6th Michael Matthews 7th and Jakob Fuglsang 8th all in the same time.

i.imgur.com/Jgid15s.jpg

The pack 13 riders comes in at 1’12”

Those three was the only focus riders making top 30 although Daniele Bennati 33th was close.

Ripley
I missed this last update until now! Wow, what an exciting stage! How fitting that De Gendt and Ciccone made the breakaway. Once again, fantastic reporting, felt like I was watching a stage on TV. Admittedly made a little easier by having the GC leader and now even Fraile doing exactly what I had hoped for.

Picking a rider for breakaways was an interesting task - Fraile was a pretty aggressive pick, I thought. So good that if he ever gets into a breakaway he could win a stage, but chances seem low, he's too good for an early breakaway, too high up in the GC, probably needed to protect Fuglsang. But "thankfully" he crashed yesterday and I admit, that got my hopes up a little. And probably it needed a situation just like that, a breakaway of one rider until the middle of a hilly stage. Nicely done, Fraile, a win would have been the icing on the cake, but also even more embarrassing, this race is just going too well for me. Smile

At this rate I better not promise Spilak won't win tomorrow's MTF. Smile But it should be the end of his great run, though probably still a better result than he could ever have expected.
