Conclusion
Chris lost his U25 jersey to Boasson Hagen after the 2th stage, because of the time bonuses. We think Chris can take it back in the upcoming mountain stage, but more important is that he improves his GC position in the next stages.
Daryl had two decent performances, with a nice podium place in stage 2.

Trofeo Laigueglia 1.1 (20 February)
This one day race has 3 climbs. From the top of the last climb it's still more then 30 km to the finish. So different senarios are possible, but it's likely it will end up in a sprint (Either a small group or what is left of the peleton).
Team leader(s):
Hassen Ben Nasser
Juan Van Heerden (Hassen and Juan bith have worked to be top fit in this race)
Free:
Abdelkader Belmokhtar (After his good performance in the Tour Méditerranéen we expect Ab to get in the breakaway or launch an early attack)
Teammates:
Rafaa Chtioui
Pieter Seyffert
Tim Allen
A.Nurani
Dennis Van Niekerk (Their job is to protect Hassen and Juan as long as they can.)
This race is one of our season goals we expect a top 10 finish.
The plan:
1. Get Ab in the breakaway.
2. On the last climb Hassen must try to react to possible attacks, so he can hopefully come over the climb with the favorites.
3. Juan will try to take the climb with the first of the peleton, so if everything comes back together in the descent he has his chance in the sprint.
PART 1
Conclusion (so far)
So far so good.
Ab has put a lot of energy in getting in the breakaway, but he succeed. Luckily it is a large breakaway, so he has been able to spare some of his strength so he can help out Hassen if needed. Their are also no favorites or outsiders in the breakaway so he should not have any trouble staying with them on the last climb.
The rest of the team delivered Hassen and Juan on the last climb perfectly. Hassen is still fit enough to counterattack Ricco and Juan doesn't seem to have to much trouble with the pace so far.
How will this end? More tomorrow

My excuses that tomorrow has become a few days later. I had almost finished it and then my computer had enough of it.
Today I have had the time to finally finish it. I think I'm going to step over to simple cut-out screen shot, because the way I'm doing it now asks to much time and to much memory of my PC.
Well enough about that, back to the rest of the race.

Conclusion
Well of course we are satisfied with the team's performance. We achieved our goal and our tactics worked. If Ab hadn't joined the breakaway, we now would be disappointed about Hassen's performance, while it is no shame that a young rider like him can't follow riders like Ricco and Nibali jet.
Ab did a good job to pick out Roelandts wheel in the final. Roelandts was to strong for everybody today, so Ab can be proud of his 2th place.

Amgen Tour of California 2.HC (18-25 February)
A little recap. Our goal here is to get Chris Froome into a top 10 spot in the GC. He opened with a 8th place in the prologue. The following to stages ended up in a mass sprint where Daryl Impey picked up a 3th and 8th place. Chris is now 10th overall due to other riders picking up bonus seconds.
STAGE 4 (21 February)
Stage 4 is a mountain stage, but it is a relative easy mountain stage with only one real obstacle and the top is 26 km before the finish. Chris is our man of course.
The breakaway consists out of 7 riders.
Crédit Agricole controls the peleton for Samuel Sánchez.
The final climb and the first to attack is from Saul Raisin (NIC). Chris feels good and jumps after him together with Julich (CSC). Chris is in the U25 leaders jersey, because Boasson Hagen (PRL) wears the overall leaders jersey.
Chris can't catch up with Raisin, who is now on his own in pursuit of the breakaway. Behind Raisin a group forms with Chavanel (TMO), Julich (CSC), Joly (RABO), Sánchez(C.A), Lange (TSL), Ortega (DSC) and Chris. Dan and Erik also catch up with Chris.
In the front Jurgen van Goolen (DSC) pulls the breakaway apart and reaches to top on his own. Raisin is the 5th rider the come over the top.
Efimkin (QSI) and Hesjedal (HNM) also reach Chris' chase group, where Dan and Erik take the lead in the descent to keep the gap to the peleton, which contains race leader Boasson Hagen. David and Jay are also in the peleton.
15 km to go and Raisin has caught up with Stetina (TSL) and his teammate Wolf and are half a minute behind van Goolen. Chris' group is about a minute behind Raisin and has about half minute in on the peleton, where Predictor Lotto is trying to protect Boasson Hagen's overall lead.
Dan and Erik do good work and Chris' group is coming closer to Raisin's group, but the finish line is also coming close. With 1 km to go Raisin's group is caught. van Goolen is still in front.
Van Goolen wins it and will also take over the overall lead.
29 seconds later Chris' group comes over the line. Sadly Predictor lotto manages to close the gap with Chris' group in the last km.

STAGE 5
This is a hilly stage, because it's never flat. There is no real difficulty in the stage, so it will probably come down to a sprint between the riders who are still fresh enough after a day long going up and down.
After 1/3 of the race a group of 12 riders has a lead of over 4 minutes to the pack, but Discovery Channel is keeping them within range. They are being helped by Liqiugas, who are working for Pozzato.
The breakaway is reeled back in in time for a 'mass' sprint. In the last 5 km there is a little hump that will be decisive for the outcome of the sprint. Erik pulls Daryl to the front. He goes so hard that they get a little gap.
But it also goes to hard for Daryl, who yells to Erik to slow down a little. So at the top of the bump Visconti (QSI) and O'Grady (CSC) have reached Daryl's wheel.
1 km to go Daryl and O'Grady are side by side. Can Daryl hold him of?
No, he can't and Paolini (LIQ) is also closing in on him.
It's O'Grady for Paolini and Daryl finishes 3th.
RESULTS
1 Stuart O'Grady TEAM CSC 5h03'42
2 Luca Paolini LIQUIGAS s.t.
3 Daryl Impey TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
4 Filippo Pozzato LIQUIGAS s.t.

8 Giovanni Visconti QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC s.t.
9 Edvald Boasson Hagen PREDICTOR - LOTTO s.t.
10 Fred Rodriguez PREDICTOR - LOTTO s.t.
Conclusion
Daryl was very close. We hope he can win if he gets another chance. However there is some tough competition here. Just have a look at todays top 10.
Now we hope Chris gets a good nights rest and delivers a good TT tomorrow.

STAGE 6
Decision day! We expect Chris can consolidating his top 10 position. It is not going to be easy. There are a lot of riders nearby like David, Dan, Erik and Jay, who are also within 6 seconds of a top 10 spot.
First candidate for the stage win is Lang (GST), who beats the best time till then, from Engoulvent (C.A), with half a minute. Lang will end up 4th.
Then it is time for the big favorite for the stage win. Fabian Cancellara (CSC)! He delivers, crushing Lang's time with 41 seconds. No surprise, Cancellara will win this stage.
Before it's time for the top 10 riders, Dan and David both ride a good TT finishing 15th and 16th in the stage. A good performance from David, who is here as a preparation for defending last years win in the Giro del Capo 2.2 (6-11 March).
First candidate for the overall win is Sylvain Chavanel (TMO), who was 8th overall before the stage. He sets the 3th time till now behind Cancellara and Lang, but it's not enough, because he will end up 5th in the stage. Meaning that there are still 2 riders to come that will beat his time.
And the first of those two is Chris. He clocks the 2th time losing only 28 seconds to Cancellara. This also puts him in pole position for the leaders jersey with only 5 riders to come. Can Chris grab the overall lead?
But that hope is soon gone. Voigt beats Chris with 8 seconds. He finishes 2th in the stage. Will that be enough for the lead?
Saul Raisin (NIC) finishes 71th losing 2'08 on Cancellara, Pozzato (LIQ) finishes 32th losing 1'32, Boasson Hagen (PRL) finishes 33th losing 1'32 and leader Jurgen Van Goolen (DSC) even finishes 85th losing 2'19.
This will make Voigt the new overall leader and Chris 2nd on only 10 seconds.

STAGE 7
Again a hilly stage, which isn't very selective. After the last KOM sprint it is 60 km more or less flat to the finish.
7 riders try there luck in the breakaway, but with CSC controlling the peleton they never get a real chance.
So mass sprint again. Erik pulls Daryl to the front.
But they are a little bit late. Daryl gets boxed in and when he finds a gap the chance for a victory is gone.
CSC shows their power Breshel has launched O'Grady to his 2th and CSC 3th stage victory in 3 days. All that is left for Daryl is 4th.
RESULTS

8 Filippo Pozzato LIQUIGAS s.t.
9 Paolo Bettini QUICKSTEP - INNERGETIC s.t.
10 Luca Paolini LIQUIGAS s.t.
Conclusion
No problems for Chris. Tomorrow a short flat stage. Last chance for Daryl to pick up a stage win, but more important is to bring Chris safe to the finish

STAGE 8
126 km and flat, so no chance for a breakaway. With 5,5 km to go Chris tries a surprise attack, with the bonus seconds from ending 1st or 2nd in the stage he could win the race. But no surprise he hardly gets a gap.
Erik pulls Daryl to Greipel (TMO) his wheel before the sprint starts.
1 km to go Daryl is trying to pass Greipel. Boasson Hagen (PRL) is not far behind. Can Daryl finish it off?
No, they are to fast. Greipel wins before Boasson Hagen . An other 3th place for Daryl.

Conclusion
We are very happy with the outcome of the race. It's no shame to lose to a rider like Jens Voigt, who also was here with a goal (Voigt won this race last year, so he managed to successfully defend his title).
We more then succeeded in our goal;
- We have 3 people in the top 10
- 1 rider on the podium
- With as a result the 2th place in the team classification
- Chris won the U25 jersey.
- We managed a top 10 finish in every stage and
- 4 times a 3th place finish.
The only disappointment is that we were multiple time very close to a win, but didn't get one. Daryl showed great class in a strong field. Perhaps if we had chosen to make this a goal for him, he would have had that little bit extra that he missed this week. But we didn't expect that all the hilly stages would end up in a mass sprint and he would get this much chances.
No reason to be negative. The season is still young and we'll surely get another win.

When I got home from our trip to California, I got a lot of good news.
1. With his 3th place in Malaysia and his 2th place in California Chris is now number 1 in the continental rankings. Too bad he now has a period without any race days and probably misses out on racing in the continental leaders jersey.
2. With the good results from the team this month we are now leading the continental rankings. But we wanted to perform well early on in the season. So with this talented team we have this not a very big surprise. However it will not be easy to defend, because the season is long from over.
3. At last I got an very important mail. We have got one of the two wild cards for Paris-Nice!! I'm very happy. I don't know if we can perform there, but it will be a great experience for the team.

Great results in TOC, and really good that you're leading the Continental rankings.

3 Jours du Vaucluse 2.2 (2-4 March)
This is a small 3 day hilly stage race. With mostly smaller continental teams and no ProTour teams at the start the field isn't very strong.
Team leader(s):
Abdelbasset Hannachi
Tiaan Kannemeyer (Bassie and Tiaan are here to pick up some race fitness before the start of Paris Nice next week)
Teammates:
Jean Robben
Bab Kuider
Kacem Frenda
Salvatore Hadrioui (Our young riders are here to learn)
We don't expect much from this race. We hope our young riders manage to get in the breakaway and, because of the field not being that strong, perhaps Bassie and Tiaan can compete for a stage win depending on their form and fitness during the race.
STAGE 1
During this chaotic stage there were a lot of attacks. Also some of our riders tried their luck. Non of the breakaways got any room, so a group of about 60 riders headed towards the finish line. With 3 km to go Ferrara from Team Designa Kokken attacked. Different riders countered and almost the whole pack sprung into action, but no one manged to pass Ferrara in the last difficult kilometers.
Tiaan jumped to place 5.
RESULTS
1 Rafaele Ferrara TEAM DESIGNA KOKKEN 3h32'06
2 Andrei Klyuev MOSCOW STARS s.t.
3 Samuel Plouhinec AGRITUBEL s.t.
4 Steven Kleynen CONTINENTAL TEAM DIFFERDANGE s.t.
5 Tiaan Kannemeyer TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
STAGE 2
Kacem Frenda got into the breakaway and picked up some KOM points. With 15 km to go everybody was reeled in.
Tiaan was feeling good and with 4,5 km to go, during a short uphill section, he jumped away and got a small gap.
The pack hesitated to long and Tiaan picked up almost 30 seconds on them. He was going to win! At the finish line he still had 20 seconds left, which also earned him the leaders jersey.
RESULTS
1 Tiaan Kannemeyer TEAM KONICA MINOLTA 3h57'17
2 Frédéric Finot SKIL - SHIMANO +20
3 Victor Hugo Peña NIPPO - MEITAN HONPO - ASADA s.t.
4 Sven Nys RABOBANK CONTINENTAL s.t.
5 Elias Schmäh SKIL - SHIMANO s.t.
STAGE 3
Defending the leaders jersey would be a nice test for our young team. It proved to be quit a task for them. The team kept the break within reach for more then half of the stage, but the hilly profile was to much for most of them. We had to ask for help from a few other teams.
Luckily there were some teams that wanted to help us out or were interested in the stage win.
With the pack together again Tiaan's jersey looked secured. To make sure he wasn't surprised Bassie pulled him to the front for the sprint started.
Tiaan ended up in 6th place in the stage and won the race!!
RESULTS
1 Sébastien Minard AUBER 93 3h41'24
2 Ricardo Van der Velde RABOBANK CONTINENTAL s.t.
3 Frédéric Finot SKIL - SHIMANO s.t.
4 Sven Nys RABOBANK CONTINENTAL s.t.
5 Benoît Vaugrenard ATLAS - ROMER'S HAUSBÄCKEREI s.t.
6 Tiaan Kannemeyer TEAM KONICA MINOLTA s.t.
GC

8 Sven Nys RABOBANK CONTINENTAL +40
9 Benoît Vaugrenard ATLAS - ROMER'S HAUSBÄCKEREI s.t.
10 Romain Feillu AGRITUBEL s.t.
Conclusion
A very nice result, especially for Tiaan. We hoped to be at least close to a stage win in one of the stages, but Tiaan surprised us with an impressive win that also proved to be enough to win the GC. We know there are no top riders here, but a win is win.
Next up is the Giro del Capo 2.2 (6-11 March), were we also want to perform well and then Paris - Nice PT.1 (11-18 March).

Giro del Capo 2.2 (6-11 March)
The only continental race in South Africa and we want to perform for our home crowd. The race consists out of 6 stages and has a pretty hilly profile. David won this race last year and he is back to defend his title. There are no ProTour teams at the start, but Barloworld has come with a strong squad including two fellow South Africans (Robert Hunter and John-Lee Augustyn).
Team leader:
David George (David road a good Tour of California finishing 10 overall and is determined to defend his title)
Sprinter:
Pieter Seyffert (Pieter probably won't get many chances, because of the hilly profile of most of the stages, but without Juan and Daryl he is our main sprinter here.)
Teammates:
Jay Thompson (Jay is David's luxury teammate and we hope he can also finish in decent GC position himself.)
Dion Botha
Jean Robben (Dion and Jean are here to work for David and the team.)
The goal for this race is clear; win it!
STAGE 1 (6 March)
Giro del Capo started off with a 9 km long prologue. David road a strong race, but couldn't take the win. The victory did went to a south African rider. Hunter took already his 5th win of the season.

44 Dion Botha TEAM KONICA MINOLTA +25
75 Jean Robben TEAM KONICA MINOLTA + 33
STAGE 2 (7 March)
The second stage is hilly stage with a not very steep 10 km long uphill finish.
The first part of the race was very nervous . A lot of riders tried to attack. Even Augustyn tried his luck, with no success.
Eventually a 12 man strong group got away.
This was not good news for our team, because nobody wanted to lead the chase. We took our responsibility and put Pieter, Dion and Jean Robben to work.
They did there best, but at the foot of 10 km climb to the finish the lead group of 4 had a lead of almost 3 minutes on the peleton.
On the climb we finally got some help. Two riders from Barloworld put in a big effort to close down the gap. With 4 km to go they almost had reeled in the first part of the breakaway. This was David (in the green points jersey) his cue and he jumped away.
With the flag of the last km in sight David was very close to the leading quartet, but it looked like was going to be to late. It also looked like he was going to get some company.
Ramirez beat England in the sprint and would also take over the overall lead.
David finished in 6th place as second of a stretched out peleton.

Conclusion
Great work from the team. They did their best to minimise the damage. Too bad David's effort did not earn him some time on other riders (In the sprint to finish no gaps where recorded by the race organisation between the first 50 to 60 riders of the peleton).

STAGE 3 (8 March)
For stage 3 the riders needed to ride 6 laps of a 20 km long course, with a 3 km long climb and a short uphill section to the finish.
Again the first half of the race was very nervous with a lot of attacks. With less then 60 kms to go Ljungqvist (front) and Ghisalberti got a gap of half a minute on some other escapees and almost 2 minutes on the peleton.
Ghisalberti couldn't follow Ljungqvist on the next climb and dropped back to (from left to right) Ford (the Australian champion), Cabreira (BAR) and Mares. Besides Ljungqvist, who kept gaining ground, they would all be reeled in by the peleton before the penultimate climb.
On the penultimate climb with less then 30 km to go David (still in the green jersey) felt good and made his move in an effort to reach Ljungqvist, who still had a gap of more then 3 minutes.
David road away on his own, but over-estimated himself and on the last climb the peleton caught up with him again.
With only 6 km to go and almost a 2 minute lead Ljungqvist could see the finish line.
On the uphill section to the finish Ljungqvist had difficulty keeping his pace, but he could just hold off the peleton that nearly caught up with him. What a performance!
Jay finished in the top 10 and David could only manage 14th after his solo chase effort.

A bit of a disappointing day for the team. David said he felt really strong, but misjudged the situation and spilled a lot of energy in a fruitless escape. But nothing is lost. There is still a difficult hilly stage and a TT on the program the next two days. |
