Paris-Nice Final Stage
Today's stage means that the final classifications of Paris-Nice will be fought out until that final finish banner.
Every mistake will be magnified, exposed and subsequently taken cruelly apart.
No mistakes.
No excuses.
A hilly/mountainous stage today with 3 climbs including the legendary Col d'Eze.
The early break went but it was no danger in the GC so I paid no attention.
With the first inclines of the Col d'Eze in our legs and most of the break back in the arms of the peloton, a hail of attacks were launched, headed by Quickstep's Carrera.
Clement and I followed in their wake.
I felt like I could have attacked to the top of the col, but Clement was not feeling that good. I waited for him and began to drive the group.
I pulled them back over the top of the climb and I led the 10-strong led group down the descent. With a group containing 5th and 4th place about a minute behind and with a chance to move Clement up the classification I gave it everything I had.
With 4k to go, I began to wind up the sprint.
Matteo Carrara jumped away and I just couldn't find the strength to pull him back.
However, I found the strength to catapult Clement into 2nd on the stage, 4th on GC and into the points jersey. I told you I'd make the top 10 didn't I? With that 3rd place I finished 9th overall.
A great day and tour for the team! With Milan-San Remo just round the corner everything is shaping up nicely. I have also got a place in the team!

Milan-San Remo Preview
The first classic of the year. 'La Primavera' is a big date on the cycling calendar and means a lot to the Italians and their tifosi .
Their are hills along the course to try and break the sprinters rythmn and give a chance for an opportunist to take the victory. The first climb is the Turchino but it is neither steep enough or close enough to the finish to make a noticeable effect. The climbs that do make a difference are the Capi climbs towards the finish. There is a new climb added due to roadworks that may shake the sprinters up a bit. The Cippressa is a steep enough climb but is not very close to the chequered flag. The Poggio is a relatively shallow gradient but provides an opportunity for attack and gaps can be opened down the descent, where the brave bounce of the greenhouses of San Remo.
The finish is not on the Via Roma as in tradition but a kilometre further on, due to roadworks. This means that if the lead-out trains have used up their strength catching attacks on the Capi then their may be opportunity for a Cancellara, a Gilbert or a Pozzato to break away.
Favourites this year are:
Sprinters such as Allesandro Pettachi, Tom Boonen, Oscar Freire and Daniele Bennati.
Opportunists such as Ricardo Ricco, Paolo Bettini and Phillipe Gilbert.
Late attackers such as Fabian Cancellara and Fillipo Pozzato.
I think there is a chance for a guy like Burghardt or Voigt attacking from a long way out, working well and holding the gap till the finish.
I will again be protecting Clement for a late attack, but there is a possibility that I may be allowed to attack for myself on the Cipressa. Kenny Van Hummel is our other option in the sprint.
See you in San Remo after climbs, views and frenetic bike racing!

Milan-San Remo
This is Milan-San Remo!
Oh My God!
The break went away, 10 strong, containing riders such as Haedo and Richeze, not the move of a rider who knew their own strengths, I thought.
The newly added climb of La Manie shook everything up, numerous riders sent reeling by a punishing pace set by the lazy pack as they fought to reel in a break that had been given far too much time. This was not for the faint-hearted and I was forced to get stuck in, helping Clement over the gruelling gradients.
The group was jumpy, riders moving away and being reeled in, the pace going up and down like the stock market.
The cobbled classics riders were out of hiding and coming out to play. A ferocious attack was sparked by the ever-energetic Fabian Cancellara, which was countered by three classy riders: Allesandro Ballan, Heorge Hincapie and Lief Hoste. These guys didn't want to leave it down to the sprinters and they were taken things into their own, very capable, hands.
The defining break had been undoubtedly formed, but Cancellara's boundless energy had proved to be a lie, his frivolous attacking threw away his chance of making this move.
The gap was rising, despite the peloton's relentless pace and I had no idea how they could be doing it up front.
My legs were burning and over the top of the Cipressa I had to let go, leaving an already struggling Clement defenceless.
His vulnerability showed on the Poggio, when the group was shaved from 57 to 31, sending copious amounts of able riders out the back, Clement blowing in the process.
Up front, Ballan wemt it alone and took a superb victory over such a tough course, leaving everyone else scratching their heads, bemused as to what tactics they could have implemented to outwit that amazing feat of power and strength.
I struggled in 89th to finish the longest classic on the calendar, but the team were thoroughly dissapointed with the days results.
We failed to place a rider in the top 50 and hadn't been even active enough to show the sponsors name on the telly.
I get to take a short break after a rather hectic race schedule but I will return with reports at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco where there is a possibility of team leadership for myself, but in all probability that position will be filled by the more capable cleats of Clement while I will keep my position as his Lieutenant and right hand man.
On that note, I am able to announce that the team has also recieved wildcards to the Ronde and Gent-Wevelgem. One of my team-mates may fill in the reporting for those races. You may be blessed with the tongue of the eloquent Floris Goessinen, our joint leader for the cobbled classics. Far more entertaining than me, I am sad to concede.
See you in the Basque Country

March Round-Up
This is where my season really clicked into gear.
Two of cyclings biggest races enabled me to test my abilities to the extreme and, despite finding myself in among the best cyclists in the world, I felt that I put in my optimum performance.
Paris-Nice was spent supporting Clement and I helped him to 4th on GC. Although this limited my own performances, I managed 9th on GC, a result which, coupled with my podium in Langkawi, may have interested a few Protour teams.
Milan-San Remo was much the same in term of my team role but was directly contrasting in terms of outcomes. The team couldn't even manage a top 50, nor even get our faces on TV, but I'm certain that it provided great experience to ride such a big race against nearly every good road rider out there.
The only thing I'm missing is a big defining win, but I'll attempt to change that later on, especially with my endeavour to triumph in the Japanese semi-classic the Japan Cup. I will try to peak for those late classics and prevail, taking home my first victory of the year.
It could come earlier though, you never know.
April is a big month for both me and the team. I go to Vuelta al Pais Vasco hoping to secure a place in the team for the Fleche and LBL. The hilly stages aren't my favourite but I could figure on some of the longer climbs and help Clement to another high position. It will be tough racing, less tactical with such an attritional parcours, but I think I can emerge a better rider for my troubles.
The rest of the squad are based around the three cobbled classics, all of which we have managed to gain entry to. Maarten den Bakker and Floris Goessinen will be leaders and I will possibly get one of my team-mates to report on them.
It's been an amazing season so far.
Let the pain continue!

Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 1
Another good race for me, I hope for more success. However, I won't be given a free run at the title as I am team-mate for Clement again.
A strong breakaway went away and worked well for the first 50k, but their co-operation stagnated into the cat-and-mouse tactics only employable in the very latter stages of the race.
They were drawn back in with a good 40k to go and, 20km further on, Joaquim Rodriguez flashed off the front and ignited a series of tough attacks, putting pressure on me to keep Clement in contention.
5 got away, with an elite group of 3 stampeding, hell for leather, towards the summit at the finish. I knew I had to do something about this and emptied the tank to keep them within reach.
As the domineering final climb loomed into view Clement dashed off the front like a whippet, leaving the group behind and me with a lot less work to do.
But up front the story had been well and truly told. The strength of Frank Schleck had been too much for Kim Kirchen at the finish, while Joaquim Rodriguez, the original instigator of that winning move, was well and truly spent, limping over the line in their wake.
Clement took 6th on the stage while I came away with 9th, another good result considering all the work I've done.
Tommorow is the only flat stage of the tour but that doesn't mean it will be inactive. Far from it. The opportunists will be going all out for a stage win in more accepting terrain and so will the sprinters, which will mean a fast pace all day.
You can't just take a stage on face-value.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 2
A flat final 50k but the first 120 contain 2 tough climbs that could shake up the pack and test the sprinters legs.
No work for me today (probably) so my job is to use as little of my vital energy stores as possible.
A breakaway went away early today, mostly made up of french riders; opportunists searching for that stage win that would make the team's tour worthwhile.
The peloton let the leash go a bit and spent the two climbs chasing hard to catch the break and pull them back in. This tired our teams sprinters and therefore we looked for other ways to make the most of this stage.
So, off in attack went Clement, up a little bump 13k before the finish.
His daring never ceases to amaze me; he sees opportunities round every corner and had quite a gap as the sprint started as he pounded away on the pedals.
However, Francisco Ventoso was on great form and jumped away from the leaders of the pack with an explosive sprint. He looked to have used up too much energy to pass Clement, who was still fighting his body to work harder, losing a year in life expectency with every wrenched turned of the pedals. The line was only 100 metres away......
But alas, no! It was not to be for Clement. No major time gained, no sponsor satisfying stage win.
On the upside, though, Clement grabbed the points jersey to wear in pride on tommorow's demanding third stage.

The Pro-Tour Cobbled Classics
In other news Cancellara romped to victory in the Ronde van Vlaanderen but floundered on the following Wednesday, falling short in 19th place in Gent-Wevelgem, behind Sebastien Rosseler.
From the Skil perspective it has been fantastic: Floris Goessinen came 6th in Flanders and 7th on the streets of Wevelgem, while gaining a lot of experience from racing these big classics for the first time.
Next big classic for the team is Paris-Roubaix, before we head to the Netherlands and then the Belgian Ardennes for the three hilly classics. I will probably ride these, but only as fourth best hilly rider on the team with my team-mate and countryman, Fumiyuki Beppu, one of the co-leaderss on the road, behind Clement, after a big experience gain.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 3
A hilly stage today but not as tough I had previously thought it would be.
A two-up break went away but didn't make it too far, brought back with 50k to go.
Baoquing Song is a fantastic stage racing talent and he was working very hard with me today to put Clement in a good position. We delivered him back to the group after a crash while attacking and into a good position for the finish.
In the sprint Clement claimed third and kept the points jersey, while I rolled in 7th, one place behind Song.
But it was Dekker who again proved himself the most consistent stage racer so far this year, winning the stage.

GC remains unchanged at the top.
Tommorow we want to shake things up over a relatively similar parcours and that may involve me making an attack.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco Stage 4
A stage very similar to yesterdays, but I think there may be some more aggressive racing today.
An early break of some classy riders went: Gesink, Sammy Sanchez, Moncoutie, Efimkim and Van den Broeck. This would encourage some hard chasing, but I was ready.
With the break still out front on the penultimate climb, Schleck chose to handle the issue himself. He charged off, hoping to catch them.
Others set off in pursuit, Clement among them.
But, unlike some of the others, he couldn't reach one of the groups and fell back to the peloton. With Clement back with us, I began a lengthy period of work to try and catch the leaders.
I wasted myself trying to close that gap, but I only ate away at some of the time. The attackers stayed out front and Stefan Schumacher won the sprint.
Clement dropped to 10th in GC but keeps the points jersey. He would like to win tommorow in order to move up in the overall standings and keep his green jersey.

Its over.
This is so painful.
Put me in the back of the car. Oh somebody's calling an ambulance. OK, then leave me here. Let the paramedics do their job.
"What happened to him?"
"I don't know but he doesn't look good. Do you think it's an illness?"
"I can't tell right now. Let's get him on a stretcher and send him to the hospital. The doctors will be able to tell you what's wrong."
"Piet!"
"Yes?"
"Put his bike on the roof of the car and go with him to the hospital"
"OK"
"It'll be alright now Yuki."
What's the race situation? How's Clement doing. What happened?
"Don't worry Yuki, that's not important right now."
"I'm just going to give you some anaesthetic Mr. Doi. Just relax now."
Oooh, that's soothing. The sweet release of sleep.

They told me what is wrong.
Broken Neck.
I don't know how long I'll be out for.
This gives me a chance to take stock.
But I won't be reporting for a while.
Sorry guys.
