9/3-15/3 2016 Tirreno-Adriatico

14/3 Stages 6/7 Teramo - Frontone 215.8 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsv65gwv1l.jpg

The original breakaway is Katusha’s Sven Erik Bystrøm and Lotto Soudal’s Thomas De Gendt, this suits Astana fine, they have no chance getting the KoM.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zps59dfeoah.jpg

Near the first climb Jarlinson Pantano Gomez from IAM and Tinkoff’s Michael Valgren takes off and quickly joins the break, with Gomez winning the first KoM sprint, he can in theory take the KOM if he wins on every top.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpsumkpkzln.jpg

Things get from bad to worse, over the top Martin Elmiger and Merhawi Kudus also manages to slip away, Elmiger just down 9 points in the KoM forces Astana to react, they have to get those two back in the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpshreisxnu.jpg

The pace gets higher and higher, due to Astana’s increasing acceleration to bring Elmiger and Kudus back, also group Valgren has to set a high pace to keep the gap open. Over the last KoM Elminger is almost caught and never gets contact to the first group.

The pace was very hard on some riders, just to name one Pierre Rolland (Cannondale) is now 18’04 behind and other are even further back, with another 90 km to go.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpsgkdbgftr.jpg

The breakaway gets caught and the pace slows down a little, some of the riders left behind is able to catch up with the peloton before they hit the final uphill towards the finish, the first group is about 100 riders.

The attacking between the best puncheus begin, a group of 9 takes the lead.
It is Philippe Gilbert (BMC) taking the stage in front of Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), The bunch get in at 52”.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpsgkurntc2.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:
This was Philippe Gilbert first win of the season, the 32 years old Belgian is not what he was back in 2010-2011 but he still has the urge and capabilities to win.

Even though many riders was in the peloton right before the finish, it was a hard race, Boeckmans Lotto Soudal) and Josef Cerny (CCC) gave in hanging very far back and 38 rider lost more than 10 minutes.

Astana: The Team kept Rosa in the KoM jersey, but with both Nibali and Fuglsang down 52 sec today, the GC is gone.

Too bad this TA was a flat one. Good job with Rosa getting the KOM though Smile. The last stage should be 'normal' enough.

9/3-15/3 2016 Tirreno-Adriatico

15/3 Final Stages 7/7 Civitanova Marche - Civitanova Marche 160 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsus4suvoz.jpg

The race starts out with rain, after a bit of fighting in front a relative large breakaway of 10 riders are formed, with no KoM contenders.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpsot3kezwd.jpg

After some 50 km, Astana’s Eros Capecchi get the opportunity to slip away, he starts a solo hunt.
The pace is not very hard and after about 10 km he is ready to make contact.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpsriilliul.jpg

The breakaway gets more than 5 minutes before the peloton react, finally it is Dimension Data hoping to bring Mark Cavendish to victory, they take over the front and the pace get much higher.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpszei5pbqx.jpg

Under the 10 km sign the breakaway still has a considerable gap to the peloton, this is going to be close.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpsxlw8fnq5.jpg

It gets very close, but the first 3 is all from the breakaway, the winner is Pirmin Lang (IAM). The fastest sprinter is Mark Cavendish taking 4th. Unfortunately Eros Capecchi runs dry on the last few km, making is in as 12th.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpstexfr3dy.jpg

Evaluation Stage:

Overall: After more than 7 years riding as a professional, this was Pirmin Lang’s first win in a World Tour setting, and his 2nd win ever.
Will be hard to get that smile of his face. Smile
Lang is a 31 years old Swiss rider who joined IAM in 2013.

Astana: Eros Capecchi did what he could to make something of the stage for Astana, but he just got some TV time.

Evaluation Race:

Degenkolb last year’s winner of Milan–San Remo and Paris–Roubaix, not to mention a series of other top results, have shown that he is on to more great results again this year, with a surprising win in this prominent World Tour stage race.

In general the race turned out to be more suited for the Sprinter/Puncheur that the true climbers, resulting in bad results for top favorites like Nibali, Contador and also Froome all finishing outside top 10. Only one top favorite Joaquim Rodriguez got inside top 5.

Astana: A very bad result for Astana, only getting the KoM when the sponsor goal was a win.

17/3-2016 Gran Premio Nobili Rubinetterie
Suno – Stresa 187.5 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsbkwpwco0.jpg

After a few unsuccessful attempts involving amongst others Astana’s Lieuwe Westra, the first to get away is Matteo Bono (Lampre-Merida) in a solo break, a little later Davide Malacarne attacks.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpsqttricxm.jpg

It ends up in a breakaway of three riders, the last is Matteo Busato (Southeast – Venezuela), they have got about 5’30 with 100 km to go.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpsikp7sp1l.jpg

On the descent after the climb over Massino Visconti, a huge crash takes Dmitriy Gruzdev down, but he is ok to carry on, and joins the peloton before the last climb. At this point the break has 2’12. The pace is now very high, 35 km to the line.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpsrhye3t6v.jpg

There are some attacks from the peloton on the last climb, forcing the pace up even further and the peloton is thinning out to just 36 riders. Lieuwe Westra is the only Astana rider in this group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpssielhiq0.jpg

The break is over right after the top. The pace slows down as everyone seems to be at the limit, now more riders can join from behind. It all ends in a sort of mass sprint, but most riders are completely drained and sprints only on the last 500m if they sprint at all.
The Race was won by Geoffrey Soupe over William Bonnet and Matthias Brändle.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpscsamzbyt.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall: After a good season start with a podium in Classic Loire Atlantique, this was Geoffrey Soupe first win since winning a stage in La Tropicale Amissa Bongo 2011. Soupe will turn 28 in just a few days. He has been with Cofidis since 2015.

Top favorite Tom Van Asbroeck was struggling with the hard pace on the climbs finishing as far back as 78. Otherwise most of the favorites did fairly well.

Astana: The team had little hope in a race like this, so a bit of time with Davide in the spotlight was an acceptable outcome.

19/3-2016 Milano – Sanremo 288.2 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/0_zpsbwaswo5d.jpg

So many riders would like to get TV time in this very important race, time after time riders attack often in big groups, but the peloton keep a high pace and they are reeled back in. Astana has decided not to attack early.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/1_zpspcoatxep.jpg

This continues for almost 50 km before the breakaway of the day is allowed to go. It is Laengen (IAM), Puccio (Sky), Selvaggi (Androni – Sidermec) and Lindeman (LottoNL – Jumbo), they get about 7 minutes but the peloton is definitely not looking for a breakaway win, with 70 km to go the distance is down to 3’28.
It is Katusha, Trek and especially Cofidis pulling in front of the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/2_zpsut36xt1a.jpg

On the Cipressa climb (5,6km 4% - 25km to go) the breakaway breaks over, now Lindeman and Selvaggi is alone in front, but with just 1’27 to the peloton the adventure seems to be over.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/3_zpsytibpmot.jpg

Over the top everyone who expects something from the race is fighting to stay up front, the pace gets more and more frantic heading for the last climb “Poggio” (3.6 km 3.7%), the breakaway is over. While Guardini can’t keep up with the front Lars Boom is having a great day, with the help of Fuglsang Boom is first over the top, having a small gap to the sprint trains behind him.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/4_zpsm2pagoo8.jpg

The sprint trains are getting closer, when Boom starts his sprint 700m out they are right behind him. Victory is out of the question, but he should be in for a good result.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/5_zpsi43hbh1e.jpg

The race was won by André Greipel over Nacer Bouhanni and Jens Debusschere. Lars Boom got in as 9th. 102 riders got the same time as the winner.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/jonta3001/6_zpsfoblzspa.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall: This was the 33 years old German’s first Monument win, a day to remember in any riders life. André Greipel also had a stage win in Paris–Nice, looks like a great season for him.

The top favorites did fairly well all in top 10, but it was the Secondary Favorites day with 1st, 2nd and 4th place. The surprise of the day was Greipel’s lead-out man Jens Debusschere squeezing himself into the podium, a brilliant day for Lotto Soudal.

Astana: Even though the goal was a top 5, it was very unrealistic considering the competition and the riders Astana has for this kind of races. A top ten can’t be anything less than a perfect result and Vino is very pleased with the teams efforts .
