Paris-Nice - Stage 5

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-5pro.jpg

It's all going to come down to the climb at the finish. Mount-Ventoux will determine the stage. Devine will just hang out at the front of the pelaton and try to inch up to a top 15 position. We've got no real chance at a stage win here.

Sylvain Chavanel attacks at the base of Ventoux, starting the action.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-5a.jpg

Nobody can bridge to Chavanel, but a chase group forms of Garate, Joly, Moreau and Pereiro.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-5b.jpg

But nobody was catching Chavanel. A great stage victory and the leader's jersey.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-5c.jpg

Devine finishes with the Pelaton nearly 5 minutes back. Still a top 15 finish on the stage is what we were hoping for.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-3pro.jpg

We don't want to become complacent with the lead, so even in a stage like this we're going to keep the pressure on. The uphill at the end might slow down the mass sprint so George will attack late once again to see if we can take anothe win.

After High Road pulled the break back in, George launced another one of his trademark attacks with 7 km to go. Eisel tried to go with him as well.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-3a.jpg

As Hincapie started on the uphill it was looking pretty good. High Road might even get a 1-2 in the stage.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-3b.jpg

But Eisel didn't have the legs to make it up the hill. Pozatto zooms past as George crosses the finish, but Eisel has enough to hold on to third. Hincapie further increases his GC lead.

Paris-Nice - Stage 6

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-6pro.jpg

This hilly stage could still be a mass sprint... but will only involve those who can make it past the rolling terrain leading up to the finish.

Voight made a late attack and was able to take the victory. Most of the sprinters couldn't make it to the front to contest the stage.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 4

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-4pro.jpg

Another fairly level stage with enough rolling terrain that George might be tempted to make another attack. It's worked well the first three stages, why not try it again?

After chasing down the break, George tries an attack with 8 km to go...

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-4a.jpg

But it wasn't going to work this time. The sprinters teams were well prepared. I guess catching them off guard four times was a bit much to ask. Pozzato took the stage in a tight sprint edging out Schumacher and Boonen.

A hilly stage with a late flat stretch. Again we're looking to hang with the pelaton and preserve our top 15 spot. I don't think we have the riders here to improve on that.

In the end, nobody took control until too late and Spilak won from the breakaway.

The Time Trial could sort things out significantly. We aren't worried that anyone will pass Hincapie, but it might show who we really need to worry about for the rest of the race.

In the end... it's still Pozzato who's closest. Hoste won the stage but Hincapie was only 10 seconds back... and Pozzato only 22 seconds behind. We're feeling pretty comfortable now... we just need to control things the rest of the way.

Paris-Nice - Stage 8

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/15-8pro.jpg

This mountains stage could shake things up at the top... but as long as Devine can hang around in the pelaton his final position should be safe.

In the end the pelaton brought back the breakaway just prior to the final climb. Near the top Voight attacked. Devine tried to follow but couldn't catch up and was quickly swallowed up by the pelaton on the descent. Voight had gotten free though and won the stage handily.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 6

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-6pro.jpg

The late hills in this stage set up well for another late attack.. but we decided that it would be better just to control the break and not worry about winning the stage.

A small break got free with no riders too close to the lead. The closest was Emanuele Sella who is nearly 5 minutes down.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-6a.jpg

Coming up on the last hill before the finishing slope, the break still had a lead of a minute and a half. Hincapie was feeling on top of the world today, his legs feeling stronger than they had all race long. We told him he had the green light to go for it if he wanted.

So he took off and tried to bridge the gap.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-6b.jpg

George was able to cross over and catch the back end of the break as Sella crossed the line to win the stage. Not only did he not lose time... he gained another 47 seconds on the pelaton by finishing in the lead group!

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 7

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-7pro.jpg

With the GC, Points and Mountains Jersey's well in hand, we're just going to pull in the break and let the sprinters have a go at it.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/16-7b.jpg

In the end, Boonen took the win ahead of Friere and O'Grady. Eisel took 4th place... a nice finish for him considering the competition.

Hincapie comes away with the race win and the points jersey. Burghardt takes the mountains jersey and gets some important hill work in. Perhaps that will help his confidence in the classics to come.

A flat circuit with a small cobbled hill leading up to the finish line. Hammond is our team lead for this one.

Leader: Roger Hammond
Co-Leader: Marcus Burghardt
Sprinter: Mark Cavendish
Free: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
TEammate: Bert Grabsch
Teammate: Servais Knaven

Klier decided to go on the break today. Hammond was the race favorite, so Klier would just sit on the back until the small cobbled section of the circuit where he'd rush to the front and push hard to try to put stress on the break.

Eventually as the pack was chasing he rode away from the break and kept a high pace up forcing the other teams to work. He finally bonked with 15km to go, but had a great solo ride on the day.

Hammond and Burghardt attacked with 6km to go and got a nice gap on the field. Once they hit the cobbles it was over... there was no way anyone would catch them with that lead.

Hammond took the victory.

Yeah, not exactly the most powerful competition. I actually though Klier might be able to solo it to victory... until he ran out of energy he was holding the gap at almost 2 minutes.

The Team:
Leader: George Hincapie
Sprinter: Bernard Eisel
Teammate: Tony Martin
Teammate: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Teammate: Diego Ulissi
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Kanstantsin Siutsou
Teammate: André Greipel

We have twin focuses for this big race... prepare Hincapie for a late attack and try to get Eisel involved in a bunch sprint. Hopefully Eisel can get over the late hills and still have some legs left.

No break went away until nearly a third of the way in, and it never got too large a lead. It was brought back in with a long ways to go.

Going over some small hills prior to the larger ones where attacks are expected, Tom Boonen and the rest of the Quickstep boys started pedaling hard... and nobody noticed at first.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1a.jpg

Soon Tom really started pushing and pulled away from his teammates.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1b.jpg

And the pack simply refused to get their act together. This is TOM BOONEN people... start CHASING!

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1c.jpg

Finally we couldn't wait any more. Eisel was struggling over the hills and Boonen was getting further and further away instead of closing like we hoped. It was time for Big George to make his move.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1d.jpg

And the pelaton was slow to react again. Heck, if they're not afraid of Tom Boonen, who's going to worry about George Hincapie?

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1e.jpg

Boonen wins... and it's not even close. Amazing win by Tornado Tom. Suprising tactics and it worked to perfection.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1f.jpg

But the Pelaton DID wake up... could George stay away? With half a kilometer to go they were breathing down his neck.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/18-1g.jpg

But they couldn't pass him... Hincapie takes second!

70 fitness form, 20 race form for 90 total.

Bumped his training up to 100% just after this race so he should be hitting 100% form at the first of the big 3 cobbled races.

I pretty much don't care about anything after the classics for Hincapie, Hammond or Burghardt. They won't have much left for the rest of the season after Paris-Robaix.

Rund um Koln

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/19-1pro.jpg

This is one of those hard to strategize races that doesn't have any big hills... but has no real flat sections either. We brought a young team for experience, with a Hammond and Boasson Hagen to contend for a race win.

Leader: Roger Hammond
Sprinter: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Free: John Devine
Teammate: Michael Barry
Teammate: Taylor Phinney
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate:Tony Martin

As the finish line approached we decided that we weren't going to win in a bunch sprint... so our four riders feeling the best at the moment attacked. Tony Martin led out Boasson Hagen, Henao and Hammond.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/19-1a.jpg

With 4 guys in the late push, our guys set the pace. Henao and Martin were working really hard.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/19-1b.jpg

The pelaton closed as the finish approached, but break member Sven Krauss had a bit more left in his tank than Edvald when it came to the sprint.

Dwars door Vlaanderen

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/20-1pro.jpg

Another cobbled races leading up to the big classics in April. The mostly flat profile doesn't really fit our cobbled riders very well as we don't have a true sprinter who can ride the cobbles other than Eisel and he wasn't interested in racing here.

Our team:
Leader: Hammond
Co-Leader: Burghardt
Teammate: Knaven
Teammate: Grabsch
Teammate: Klier
Teammate: Sieberg
Teammate: Boasson Hagen
Teammate: Ulissi

The race was pretty uneventful until Nuyens attacked on the second to last cobbled section. The High Road riders missed the move initially and were unable to bridge the gap.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/20-1a.jpg

Devolder and Gilbert went with Nuyens, and the three of them were set to sprint it out. In the end Nuyens and Devolder were much more fatigued than Gilbert, who rode away with a fairly easy win in the sprint.
