Why is it idiotic? He doesn't have a good track record against stacked fields (although he is one of the top sprinters in the world) |

@ cav: he's a great talent but he lacks self awareness
everytime he wins he goes 'im the fastest of the pack' even tho he beats only the likes of chichi weylandt etc who arent really topsprinters
and then when he goes into a big race where it really matters, and most/all top sprinters are there, like gent-wevelgem he fails and always looks for excuses
It's amazing how much that sounds like Boonen a few years ago
I was just thnking that
and not sure who posted it, but Boonen isn't one of the 3 best sprinters in the world. Top 7 possibly |

I knew some idiot would bring up the pathetic argument that Cavendish doesnt beat any top sprinters. Well done MortChill
Calling him an idiot is certainly a fine way to get across your point on Cavendish.
Anyway, Although he has beaten some top sprinters once or twice, he's not in their league. He hasn't done it with any measure of consistency, although there's a great chance he will some day. When he beats Hushovd, Boonen, McEwen, etc. with any measure of consistency, I'll call him a top sprinter. If he ever manages to beat the best sprinters in the world (right now that would be Freire and Petacchi) frequently, I'll consider him elite.
Just not right now.
As for his attitude, it's beating a dead horse with a stick, really. He's an asshole, it's been well documented, and it won't lead us anywhere but to insults.
So can we please move on? pretty please?

I hate people always going to that same old 'excuse' when trying to discredit him.
Call him an arragoant bastard or whatever, but Ill duplicate that response every time I read someone going back to that excuse.
Im curious though, has Cavendish even actually faced Petacchi in a sprint? I cant remember any race in which theyve come up against each other

SN, im going to tell you the same thing i tell Levi4Life everytime we have a discussion where someone rather blindly defends someone: DONT! Unless youre capable of at least bending your opinion just slightly, it will end up in a catfight everyone will get mad about.

One rider was extremely irritated after the race. Mark Cavendish couldn't deliver the win for High Road, since he didn't even sprint. "Too dangerous, too dangerous," the British rider shouted. "There was no wind and people sprinted who can't even sprint. Okay, it's their right, as it's a one-day race." Cavendish continued fuming. "I nearly crashed five times in the last two kilometres. Five times!" Did he have the legs to win? "Yes, but I didn't even sprint."
Pretty simple really - in a sprint, you've got to take risks - and anyone can choose to sprint, you just need to shut up and get past them. It's that simple. No point whining about it, they are just as entitled as you to sprint.
What counts is what you do, not what you could have done.

Couldn't agree more - you're doing exactly what the Americans do - which is blindly stating how great they are, and ignoring the facts.
Yes, Cavendish could be a top sprinter, but he isn't at the moment

The conversation was mainly about him being arrogant and not willing to take enough risks and having a big mouth. Im fine with that because its true.
It was not necessary for MortChill to bring back the excuse of him only being able to beat riders like Chicchi or Weylandt. It didnt add anything to the point he was making.
Im NOT saying i think he is the best sprinter in the world ... he clearly isnt

If you re-read Mortchill's post, I really don't think that was his main point.

I can't either. but if Petacchi gets on terms with his team (which the team can't afford not to do), they should be up against each other in the Girol. I'm very interested in what he can do.

Anyone remember the "flattening" tyre excuse?

I didnt say it was his main point, what I was trying to say that it was an dditional point that just wasnt needed.
Anyway, everyone knows that Chris Hoy is the best sprinter in the world, he is the World Sprint Champion afterall.

I'm not trying to argue but I'm just wondering. I thought High Road wasn't racing in the Giro.

Me too!! wtf? Why did we get thrown in the middle of this?!? We don't even have a Top 20 Sprinter!! You'll never (never say never) hear us talking smack about one of our sprinters. |

how wrong could you be... if he edges Bos by a few milimeters 2 times after Bos being unbeaten for 3 years straigth doesnt mean he immediatly is the worlds best sprinter.
as I said. Bos won every single sprint heat in 3 years in a row. that has to end somewhere and it did with a few millimeters against Hoy. After Beijng, we will talk again, if Hoy wins it there, you have rigth to speak. |

I think (and hope) he was being sarcastic.

Edit: never mind. I read Issosso's post.
