I agree with you to a point yes, but if your the one of the sprinter teams targeting to win this stage, you don't want to slow up and potentially let a dangerous break go.
If I was in the yellow jersey I would try to do what Nibali has just done but if I was a sprinter then I would still be pushing my team on the front.
