The US needs to step up their game. I see no US rider in the race. Yet being in the US, I have seen many great young riders coming from Colorado, Montana,Texas to name 3. So why they arent around I would guess is due to a lack of good showings or no true team managers have seen them.

I imagine it mostly had to do with two things. First, cultural differences are important. The requirement of learning at least one new language and rarely living in a multilingual community is quite a steep commitment for young riders who are used to only requiring English. This is in contrast to a lot of European countries where bilingualism to at least a decent degree is important.
Secondly it is possible to make a decent living riding domestically in the USA, where the previous language and cultural issues aren't a concern. There is enough money in the various Continental teams to ensure that riders can work as a domestique or team leader for the length of their cycling career. Thus there is no need to travel.

There is Mannion who is an alright Stage racer, but he's not as good as the likes of those in that last. The rest are too old, too young and not good enough until a few years from now, or just not good enough.
Canada hasn't even had a team in the race for 2 years. The claim to fame for us is that Boily held the leaders jersey and came 2nd in the GC to Esteban Chaves. Boily even beat Nairo Quintana

Kinda sad really. I was visiting family in Colordo and some pro riders where home training. And some younger riders rode with them, and did very well when they did some "sim" type riding of a race. TVG got beat badly on one of his local climbs. This was 2yrs ago, but everyone knew the kids name who got the better of TVG mant times.
Yet now, I dont recall who he was...because I knew then. But he never went far I guess or quit.
Also, as far as I am aware, the US dosent air many races. Only races I can watch are:
Tour of Calafornia
Tour of Colorado
Tour de France
After that, you have to have a satalite connection or special order about 100 channels to watch cycling. They didnt even air the 2 other US stage races here. You may catch a crit on at about 3-5am but its rare.
Wish we had more, the Giro use to be on here...but not now. Making people uninterested in cycling because unless they ride...TV isnt airing it to make people want to watch/learn/start anything related to the sport. And Armstrongs PED stuff made it worse for any non riding person to get interested.
Pain,Agony,Suffering...Thats why I love cycling!

Ewan was beaten on stage 3! Seems like the climb claimed some victims too.

Hmm, I have the feeling Van der Lijke turned in more of a sprinter and less of a puncheur.

Well, he would have won if he had one more rider helping him. Valgren and Mannion attacked with 10km to go and went all the way.

That explains the weird result, i was a bit confused and didn't have a chance to follow the stage today.

Looks like he was involved in a late crash, since he and several other riders are listed a long way down the results, but only 3 seconds back.

Strange how a race between two alp cities can be that flat. |

Allright, that could be true.
But still, not only based on this result, but just overall. Seems to be a bit more focussed on sprints now, still amazing on hills though, especially compared to other sprinters.
I find it quite hard to say which category he's better now.

Valgren is more a king of the hills, if you ask me. Not mountains.

Pretty impressive gap by Fernandez. I can't find any good results by him before. |
