Trofeo Mighorn: Son Severa - Cala Minor
Ian Boswell - Joshua Edmondson - Sergio Henao - David López - Kanstantsin Siutsou - Ben Swift - Jonathan Tiernan-Locke - Rigoberto Uran - Xabier Zandio
A huge battle was fought at the start of the race to get a rider into the breakaway. As a result the pace was very high and the pack stretched to the limit. Eventually the pack had to slow down a bit and Boswell, Duenas, Ribeiro, Goos and Velasco could escape.
Too little strong teams found one of their riders in the breakaway and increased the pace of the pack. The breakaway was caught. Several attacks followed and eventually Moreno, Zeits, Edmondson and Moyano got a small gap with the pack.
Bizkarra joined the leading group a little later. Several other riders followed his example and due to these attacks the pack wheeled back in the escapies. Ponzi, Haas, Clement, Uran and Niyonshuti were the next ones to escape.
Losada, Zabriskie, Boaro, El Fares and Dekker joined the leading group. With three riders of Garmin, the others stopped peddling and the pack rapidly closed the gap. Attacks followed from the breakaway and from the pack. This led to a leading group of 14 riders as also Castroviejo joined the breakaway together with the Sojasun riders Engoulvent, Simon and Siskeviciu. The riders made it over the Col de Sa Bandida with a 1'18" lead on Tamadouris and Keisse and 1'43 on the pack.
Two kilometers before the finish the attackers were caught by the pack. Due to the difficult last section the pack had broken into several pieces. Uran tried to break away righ before the pack linked up but failed. In the sprint it was Keukuleire who was fastest. He finished right before his teammate Clarke and Simon.

Todays stage turned out to be very difficult for the Sky Pro Cycling Team. Most of our riders were involved in a couple of breakaways of some sort and since the pack never really slowed down, there was simply no time to take a breath. Uran did make it into the most promising breakaway. In retrorespect his attempt to stay away two kilometers before the finish was not the right move. Saving energy and taking part in the sprint may have resulted in a better finish, but surely not to a victory. Swift would have been the rider to be played out in the sprint and he managed to maintain himself in the front of the pack over the hilly last section, but unfortunately not in sufficient shape to take part in the sprint. The next hilly stages will be more suited to the sky squad...

Stage 3: Dukhan - Al Gharafa Stadium 154 km
Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Gabriel Rasch - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas
Hayman, Traksel and Thomson escaped from the pack very early in the race. The conditions in todays stage are very harsh due to the strong wind.
The first intermediate sprint at Umm Suwaiya Farm was won by Thomson before Traksel and Hayman. Felline just joined the leading group and finished fourth, while the pack was two minutes behind.
The gap of the leading group expanded to almost seven minutes, but it quickly decreased in the last stage of the race. At the intermediate sprint at Suwaiya Masjid the gap with the pack was reduced to 2'47". Traksel passed trough first, before Hayman, Felline and Thompson.
The attackers were caught easily by the pack, but due to the strong pace several riders dropped down. The sprint was interested as Koldo Fernandez more or less escaped by starting the sprint early. Where others hesitated Sutton chased down Fernandez but was a couple of meters short to catch him. Van Poppel finished third.

Sky was very close to a victory today, but unfortunately Chris Sutton wasn't able to catch Koldo Fernandez. Nevertheless things are looking good for the Sky team. The team has 5 riders in the top 12 and with victories both Boasson Hagen and Sutton can take the leaders jersey. The only other sprinters who are close in the general standings are Viviani and Goss.

In the decent of the Coll de Puig Major, Le Mevel, Lopez and Çardoso joined the leading group. The pack in turn was rapidly approaching.
At the Coll de Sóler the pack caught the attackers and due to the strong pace it broke into several pieces. In the downhill section several smaller groups joined and two major groups of roughly 35 riders were chasing eachother to the finish.
On the last climb Clarke and Amador escaped. They are chased by a group of twenty riders.
Clarke and Amador managed to stay ahead of their pursuiers. Clarke was faster in the sprint and won the stage.

It was another difficult race for the Sky Team. Eisel fell in the last stage of the race and lost his good position in the general standings. Also Irizar lost time. Viviani and Goss scored bonus seconds and pass the Sky riders, while Sutton and Boason Hagen were pushed into the fence right before the sprint started and were unable to seriously compate for the victory. There will be other days...

In the past couple of races I noticed that timing the arrival of your sprint train at the front of the pack is crucial on extreme. Too early and the bars will be empty before the sprint starts. You want to be there just in time. The risk is that your riders are blocked by slower riders coming back from the relay, or worse by another sprint train which is cutting a corner. This is what happened the last stage. No luck yet, but it could turn swiftly I'm still hoping for a race where the pack breaks in several pieces to get rid of some of the Radioshack riders. Results or no results, I like this challenge and having a lot of fun playing PCM12 with Sky. Soon the last stage of the Vuelta a Mallorca... |

Stage 5: Camel Race Track - Al khor Corniche 145 km
Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Gabriel Rasch - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas
Turgot, Garcia, Amorison and Hayman escaped from the pack where several other riders failed to do before. They quickly took a lead on the pack of more than 5 minutes.
Amorison took the intermediate sprint at Al Otouriyah before Garcia and Hayman. The pack followed at 6 minutes.
Garcia took the second intermediate sprint at Al Ghuwairiya before Amorison and Hayman. The pack reduced the gap with the attacking group to 2'45".
As expected the attackers didn't have a change against the pack at full speed and once more the race finished with a mass sprint. Renshaw was fastest followed by his countrymen Von Steele and Goss. For Goss it meant that he takes over the leaders jersey.
