Hugo Almeida is starting. does that answer your question?
this is why I was joking with sam the other day that we'd gladly trade players for a striker and a goalie if we could
we have a glut at most positions and are very thin in others

Well I remember that a few years ago Nuno Gomes was always playing decent for Portugal but I guess he's crappy and old right now?

a striker that can play well alone up front is rare. we've always had good strikers that play well with other strikers, but we've played them alone, so they've always been inefective despite being great at their clubs (playing alongside someone else). Pauleta is a prime example.
Gomes is someone who isn't a goalscorer but makes the players around him better with his good team play, much like Crouch. but right now he is a disgrace. not old, just in horrible form for about two seasons now.(he's 30 or 31. not old just yet).
this problem is only going to get bigger and bigger because our youth ranks keep producing forwards and forwards instead of strikers. and the end result will be chaotic, since there will be no strikers.
eventually we'll have to go the way the french have been doing in their youth teams for years by going "hey you, we need you, come here, you're portuguese now whether you want it or not"
Almeida had a lot of potential and could've been great, but Porto screwed him up unfortunately. not to mention he also is not one to play alone.

yeah, and he scored yesterday. I like him and hope he'll stick but I doubt it.
also, I've found the UEFA regulation for the draw (which is December 2nd).
what count are results in the Qualifying stages for the last world and european cups (only 2004 and 2006)
top 4 seeds are Austria+Switzerland+Greece+top ranked team
so no one wants to be that other top ranked team (whoever are won't face any of the other three)
and everyone wants Austria.
this makes it possible that we'll have not one but two "groups of death".
if spain slip just a slight bit in the ranking with their next game, we can have a group of
Italy France Portugal Spain

I definitely won't be watching, I just can't stand the sight of Morten Olsen's face anymore.
Don't worry, there's nothing to watch -- well, except for rain, rain and people trying to push the water away from the pitch.
At least we scored a goal, for this team, that's some kind of progress right?

Yes, and what a goal! Fantastic playing by Bendtner ... or, well, maybe not. |

To be honest I dont really agree with the criticism.
If you look at our players we are not underachieving (much)
We have just about 2 (two) players of international quality - Poulsen and Laursen. the rest are squad players in their clubs (if at all).
and not one world class player. None. Nil. Zip.
Bendtner might become one, but her sure as hell isnt yet!

And we just need defenders, Van der Sar is fine, Stekelenburg is a young goalie and excellent replacement for Sar, but we lack defending skill.
Boulahrouz is pretty decent, Mathijssen sucks, Emanuelson could become class, but is still too dodgy at times, so is Drenthe (left backs), and Heitinga is good as central defender and right back, but still not world class and not nearly good enough to stop really good strikers.
Yet suprisingly, we nearly never get any goals against, because of Vd Sar. So that's not the big problem. The big problem is, we have a world class midfield with Sneijder, vd Vaart, Seedorf, etcetera. But somehow we don;t score. Against Romania we had far more chances, but lost 1-0. Against Albania we had much chances, but only scored 1, same goes for Luxemburg.
Seems Van Nistelgeklooi, Van Persie, etc just don't score in our national team. Or not enough ... but then again, we never see crosses. Is it so hard to cross a ball in from the side? they allways try to play over the ground, but that simply doesn't work when you play very defensive teams...

Well I have my doubts on Emanuelson and Drenthe...defensively they have much too learn still. And indeed, Holland played so stupid yesterday...everytime the same story, they slowly move up front, Luxembourg kicks it away etc etc...
But dont be harsh on Van Persie, he rules

I've got to quote you again.. Where do you put a player like Agger, then? If he is not a international class player, then I don't what he is.. |

what I said about England and it's defensive midfield applies to Holland too. hence why you guys falter in the latter stages usually. either Maduro kicks into awesome form or I don't see you winning.
not that we have any chance either.

Well we only have good attacking midfielders.
Since van Basten is too stubborn to make up to Van Bommel. If we had Van Bommel or Davids back we had good DM's. But now...nope...
Btw, De Zeeuw kicks Maduro's ass easily. He's our DM man now. (Demy de Zeeuw, AZ) |

Davids is far too old by now, but Van Bommel would certainly add steel there. because when the midfield turns into a battle, you're missing a presence there. the other midfielders are a bit soft (except Landzaat), and Van Bommel would no doubt demand respect.

I know who he is
my point is that De Zeeuw is solid but unspectacular, so either the inconsistent Maduro shows he's something more or there's not much hope.
