WHAT THE OWNER THINKS ABOUT US

Two Italian sponsors, and with an Italian license it clear where the focus will lie here. Having such focus is great in country with a wide range of old and young talents. And any shortfalls will be made up with neighbouring talents.

Ballan is the top rated rider of the team. A bit past his best but the former world champion can still perform on the cobbles, even if the support for him is weak. But the real star attraction is Nibali. A great stage racer who should win the Giro. Nibali can pick up plenty of wins in any stage race and will be a great team leader. Also with a mention is wild man Ferrari. He can be as fast as his namesake but is prone to reckless moves. He could grab a couple of wins but will mostly be aiming at top10’s.

Behind those names are yet more. Martin will ride his season as World ITT champion. A threat for some shorter tours, and decent support in a GT. There is also a great trio of young international talent. Poels, Betancur and Kelderman are all stars for the future and are great support even now. They are just part of a strong deep range of climbing support which will certainly help Nibali quest for a GT win.

There is a great mix of youth and experience that will keep this team strong for several seasons yet. But that lack of top quality sprinter and lack of cobbles support could put extra pressure on the climbers.

Key Rider: Nibali
He has to perform this season. A GT win isn’t a must but it is expected of him on home turf. And good results at other Italian stage races will certainly keep Fastweb well safe.

Strength: Climbing
A wide range of climbers, many of whom are young, will propel them into a lot of good results for several seasons. They can match the best on the steep stuff.

Weakness: Flat Support
Ballan is capable of winning, as long as he has support. Without that support here he may struggle to get the top results. Ferrari and Kruopis are ok sprinters but lack dedicated support again and that puts them at a disadvantage.

Rating: 8/10
A real chance at the Giro win is great. And they can bag plenty of other top results for sure. But that lack on the flat again could put extra pressure on the climbers. And if they miss a beat it could put Fastweb into a real fight.

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER: THE START

STAGE 1

media.cyclingnews.com/2011/06/14/1/stage_1_profile_600.jpg

We aren' expecting a lot from this stage, there are many better sprinter than Kroupis; so i don't think we can expect even a Top 5 in a flat stage in this TDU. Anyway we hope in a Top 10

As the expectation the stage was pretty boring for the team, we just stay in the peloton with nobody in the breakaway. The final was a sprint: we tried to put Kroupis in a good position but he wasn't able to take a good wheel (especially one of the SGL, the best team in sprint at least in the TDU) and he finished 17th.

STAGE 2

media.cyclingnews.com/2011/06/14/1/stage_2_profile_600.jpg

Today our expectation are pretty high we have a solid hill/ mountain team though we aren't the best. Anyway a Top 10 and maybe some more is possible. Our goal? A good position in the GC.

Again nobody in the break and our race started at 16 km when Ballan and Voigt (SGL) attacked

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/UCPCL/PCM0007_zps20351540.jpg

and re-attacked at 8km (2 km before they were releed in) and made the last one at 3 km

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/UCPCL/PCM0008_zpsc0c8e770.jpg

After one kilometer Gilbert attacked and overpassed Alessandro, then was Evans to overpass him.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/UCPCL/PCM0009_zps6480bdf5.jpg

Either Ballan and Voigt were very tired, so Gilbert take an easy win, with Evans holding his 2nd place. Behind them there was a sprint finish and our best rider was Visconti in 11th place and loosing 16 second. Ballan unfortunately wasn't able to keep the pace and he lost many position in the final sprint: he probably attacked a bit too early and a bit too much. He deserves an applause though. A good news is that we are 3rd in team classifications.

STAGE 3

media.cyclingnews.com/2011/06/14/1/stage_3_profile_600.jpg

Well this is another sprint finish, so as i said for the first stage we know this isn't the right stage for high expectation or hope. We'll try to do better than the first one with Kroupis though.

Today another dissapointing stage for the team, in fact Kroupis did better than the first stage but wasn't able to do better than a 15th. Plus this stage shows how much we aren't lucky! At 11km to go there was a crash that included Di Luca and Guarnieri.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/UCPCL/PCM0003_zps06eeec34.jpg

Fortunately they are feeling better now and they'll be able to continue the race. On another note Visconti reached the Top 10 (9th) in GC to the crash of some rivals like Niemec TUG. We hope he's feeling better though.

STAGE 4

media.cyclingnews.com/2011/06/14/1/stage_4_profile_600.jpg

For this stage i'm expecting some attack but ING and SGL will try to keep the race "close" to finish with a sprint. So again the only thing i ask is just finish in a better position than the last one.

i46.tinypic.com/ok7vqh.jpg

That's what i've seen during the race! No signal here in Italy, so i don't have a lot to report or say about the race. From what we've heard Kroupis (here our main sprinter) was dropped in Menglers hill so in this stage again a bad result for the team. Let's wait better days but a thing is certain: Kroupis won't be anymore our leader in the sprint!

STAGE 5

media.cyclingnews.com/2011/06/14/1/stage_5_profile_600.jpg

The Queen Stage, here there will be decided the victory of TDU and the team classifications. My hope are many and high: firstly the main goals is keep the Top 10 in GC and hopefully the Top 3 in team classifications. Plus we'll try to finish in the Top 10 of the stage (it would be the first in TDU) and maybe something more.

Here there will be decided the GC: this is THE QUEEN STAGE! As said above lots of expectationes today. The stage in the start like all the other was pretty calm: no guys in the break because we were focused on the final part to get our first good result. And in this stage we did our best result with Ballan 9th, but we weren't satisfied though Visconti kept his placement in the GC. We were disappointed cause Ballan (again one of our best rider) took 1'02'' and Betancur the one with the most hopes here (hoping in a Top 10 and in the white jersey) failed. He at least shows how much is aggressive and tried in the first climb (with 25 km to go) and was the only one able to create a gap with the main group. Unfortunately he was reached and overpassed.
As someone said:
Better to try and fail than not even try.

STAGE 6

I really have to say something about the stage? Well no: same of all the others flat stages, Kroupis unable to do a decent sprint and today finished 20th, better did Di Luca; i think that really sums up Kroupis' TDU.

Nice.. the page has over 100 likes already Grin

Anyway, quite a disappointing Tour Down Under for the team. Would have expected more from Ballan to be honest. At least Visconti gives the team some points Smile

I'm pretty disappointed by the page for the bad qualitySad
As for TDU i'd expect more by Betancur, while Ballan did good in the hilly stage (a shame that in the first hilly stage due to the many attacks he was in the end too much tired and lost lots of seconds).

Edited the page: now the quality is better imo.
