The huge turn he did directly before makes me think he gifted Cummings the win long before in exchange for his improved GC position.
Because moving up to 18th in GC is groundbreaking...
He missed out a Top10 by 10 seconds only. But i still donĀ“t understand why he gave away a stage win for a low Top10 in a crappy stage race.

Hesjedal didn't give this win away. Cummings just has a much stronger punch in a sprint than Hesjedal. You mustn't forget that Cummings has a track background. He easily outsprints the ex-mountainbiker Hesjedal.
And additionally Hesjedal did a lot more work in the climb before and also after the climb he did more work in the wind. He had nothing left in the tank in the end |

Did you watch the video? Because that clearly isn't what happens. Hesdejal turns and looks back to the pack when Cummings goes, instead of responding, and when he finally gets up and jumps, he and Cummings ride at pretty much the same speed into the finish. Considering how far out Cummings went, it's likely had Hesdejal grabbed his wheel Ryder would have been able to come around and snag the win.
Great name, by the way. |

hmm, i just watched it again. I still don't think that Hesjedal "gave away" that win. You just don't give away a win in a pro tour race, it's your job and your responsibility for your team to do everything to get the win in this situation (mabye if Hesjedal would have secured the overall win, he could "donate" the stage win to Cummings, but this obviously was not the case.)
Probably Hesjedal just knew that Cummings is a lot stronger in this man-against-man sprint situation. So he used all of his energy to lead for the last hundred meteres to maybe hold on to enough seconds for going up some places in the GC.
Cummings was going a little slower in the end, yes, but that was just because his gap (which he easily created) was big enough to roll gently over the finish line
I'm not a big Cummings fan, neither I'm british btw, but he is just a better sprinter than Hesjedal (which is not that hard) |

I thought the nickname for that was "harder training and marginal gains" but I may be wrong. |

Its just 'marginal gains''. And its not just team sky, its british sport in general. Everyone is sport is all about the marginal gains. |
