The early breakaway is brought back when the action kicks off on the penultimate climb. Guillaume Levarlet leads the attacks, with Kristjan Koren and Pablo Urtasun for company.

i.imgur.com/Wchug.jpg

Riccardo Charini and Johann Tschopp are also off closer to the top of the climb, and reaches the other three at the summit. They're no more than half a minute or so ahead though, since Sky have something planned out.

The front group descends down into Toulon very slowly and they're caught at the foot of the final climb up to Mont Faron. Sky are still controlling things, with Koretzky and race leader Demare both looking good.

i.imgur.com/Nn3Ut.jpg

Tschopp soon attacks again, breaking the field apart. Tomasz Marczynski reacts to this move immediately, dragging Urtasun and Simon Clarke along with him. Koretzky also still goes strong.

i.imgur.com/dbYh2.jpg

Nobody seems to be able to really break free though, since all the attacks are neutralized. Clarke is the next to go, near the top. Koretzky continues to climb amazingly well.

i.imgur.com/UoTxl.jpg

Clarke's attack is by far the strongest yet, and the Australian opens up a gap between himself and the chasing group that's still being led by Koretzky. Lars Petter Nordhaug and Fredrik Kessiakoff are now following him closest though.

i.imgur.com/lncZP.jpg

Clarke is by far the strongest though! The chasers can't shut down his gap, so he solos home to conquer Mont Faron in a fashionable way, along with the GC victory. Great day for the GreenEDGE team.

i.imgur.com/bLm6T.jpg

Nordhaug beats Kessiakoff and an incredibly strong Koretzky for place two, almost thirty seconds down on Clarke.

Marczynski, Grivko, Jérôme and Chiarini lose another 15 seconds to the day's winner, finishing 44 seconds behind. Good performances by all of these, beating several, on paper, stronger climbers.

The next riders finish almost two minutes down, showing that the eight first riders today were a cut above the rest. Demare limited his losses very well, but still lost too much time to stay in a good overall position.

Koretzky may have missed out on the bonifications today, but the seconds he got from his stage win are enough to finish second behind Clarke in the final GC. Nordhaug follows them in third place.

A Great second place Overall for Koretzky, he totally deserved it with his regular finishing

And to take away the Points and U25 Classifications as well was a great achievement Wink

La Pomme squad:

i.imgur.com/PBDsO.png

For the third and last time in a while Koretzky leads the squad. Unfortunately he fell during training in the week between Tour Med and now, and hurt himself a bit. Therefore his shape isn't as good as it was. It's a really bad timing, since it'll now be even harder to get the stage win the sponsors want.

The rest of the squad will keep Koretzky out of the wind and carry bottles for him. Laporte and Tarride will have a bit more free roles, and will probably try to join a breakaway or two.

Startlist:

i.imgur.com/MYQOR.jpg

Daniel Moreno is, when in shape, by far the strongest rider in the race. Katusha have made sure that he has a strong team backing him up too. With top-class domestiques like Giampaolo Caruso and Xavier Florencio in his team, he'll never have to worry about getting isolated.

Michael Albasini may have disappointed a little in Tour Med last week, but still wasn't completely off. Maybe his team mate's victory atop Mont Faron has motivated him to step up one level? Tomasz Marczynski must also be watched, after his excellent result on Faron.

That was a very good performance from Koretzky to grab that second place in the Tour Mediterraneen. Smile Hopefuly he'll still be in a decent shape to show off the team colours in Haut Var!

Tarride successfully makes it into the breakaway early in the stage. After winning both KoM sprints solo, he gets company from Jan Ghyselinck and Julien Antomarchi, and together they build up an eight-minute advantage.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_01_05_zpsd455a45f.jpg

Tarride kicks off near the top of the last climb to win to take maximum points there as well, and successfully does, securing the KoM jersey for tomorrow. Their lead has meanwhile been reduced to 4'30.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_01_06_zps4f3876b8.jpg

They cooperate well though, and by the time the final lap on the finishing circuit arrives, they're still around a minute ahead. Antomarchi sees this as the time to go for it, and drops his two breakaway companions.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_01_07_zps8e6cfc86.jpg

The Frenchman pushes on very hard and defends his slim advantage very well. Four kilometres out, he's still over a minute ahead of the peloton, with Tarride and Ghyselinck still in between. Koretzky is helped into position just behind the chasing Vacansoleil squad.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_01_08_zps710279ab.jpg

Heartbreaking end for Antomarchi. The uphill finish saps his legs completely and Michel Kreder blows past him under the Flamme Rouge. Koretzky is still well placed, but isn't having a top day.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_01_09_zpsb0a16964.jpg

The finish comes a tad too late for Kreder, and Giovanni Visconti manages to jump past him in the very finale. Kessiakoff grabs the last bonification seconds, while Koretzky has to settle with a ninth place. The injury has really hurt his preparation.

sutty68
Koretzky is continuing with his good form, long may it continue Wink

And nice to see Tarride claim the Mountains jersey on stage 1 Wink

Miguel98
Only if Koretzy was in better form, he would have won. Smile

FreitasPCM
It's still a decent result, let's hope that the injury doesn't condition his performance. Wink

Thanks! Smile

Tarride successfully joins the breakaway again, to defend his King of the Mountains jersey. Anthony Charteau, Simone Ponzi, Jean-Marc Marino and Simone Stortoni accompany him, and luckily aren't interested in the points.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_03.jpg

Samuel Dumoulin, Rory Sutherland and Romain Bardet catches up a bit later in the stage. Unfortunately these start to battle Tarride for the points. Luckily they were far behind him ahead of the stage.

Tarride is unable to match the better climbers on the top of the climbs, but still gains enough points to defend himself against them in the KoM classification. I other words, he's king of the French mountains!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_04.jpg

In all the excitement, I almost forgot that the real race was going on a few minutes behind the leading group. Fortunately, nothing important has happened. Movistar and Vacansoleil are just making sure that the break wont stay clear.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_05.jpg

At the day's highest point, the top of the last categorized climb, the pace has dropped major parts of the main peloton. Only around 80 riders are able to stand the brutal Movistar / Vacansoleil pace.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_06.jpg

All the breakaway members go for the points also at the intermediate sprint with 29 kilometres remaining. Except for Tarride, who's too tired to even try.

Unfortunately this gets him dropped from the group, and he never closes the gap and makes it back. Quite frustrating, as it looks like the break could actually stay clear. 2'30 ahead with just under 30 km remaining.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_07.jpg

Dumoulin is even more unlucky. A couple of kilometres later, he falls over his handlebars in a tricky corner. This obviously ends the Frenchman's chances of victory, as even Tarride comes past him.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_08.jpg

At the front, the escapees start to realize that they could make it all the way to the finish. Marino can't hold back and attacks just before the start of the penultimate climb. Their advantage has even increased to 2'40!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_09.jpg

It starts to come down rapidly as soon as the climb starts though. Marczynski puts in a brutal attack, so Koretzky starts chasing. Just this little acceleration reduces the break's advantage to 1'55!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_10.jpg

The GC riders continue to battle all the way to the top, catching the breakaway in the process. Bardet and Charteau gives it a last shot, but they're just 15 seconds ahead on the descent and are soon caught as well.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_11.jpg

Marczynski jumps clear again at the foot of the final climb and creates a gap. Jeannesson leads the chase, with Koretzky boxed in just behind his French compatriot.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_12.jpg

The bad position causes Koretzky to lose all chances at grabbing a few bonus seconds, as he falls even further back when the road gets narrower. Albasini meanwhile, has shot up alongside Marczynski.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/hautvar_02_13.png

The Swiss has a little more in reserve and wins the stage just ahead of Marczynski, with Grivko following in third. The yellow jersey of Visconti takes fifth and wins the GC just hundredths ahead of Albasini!

An angry Koretzky finishes in a decent 8th place, with a lot left in his tank. The unlucky position costed him a Top 5 today, as he was feeling great on the final climb (+5). Well, well. At least inside Top 10 in the GC.

The top10 looks good for me seeing who is still behind like Iglinski, Jeannesson or Moreno. Plus the KoM of course. Shock

Koretzky is pretty unknown to me but as I just realized he is quite successful also in real. Wink

sutty68
Nice to see Tarride walk away with KOM Title Wink

FreitasPCM
A solid performance from Koretzky (I know how to write it now Pfft ) and a great achievement from Tarride with the KoM jersey. Wink

dienblad
Bad luck with the bad positioning, but someday, you get the advantage of it!

Thanks. The KoM jersey is a very nice achievement. Smile

Monthly News - February

Another month has passed already, and March is just upon us. Plenty of races have been ridden, so here's the usual short summary from them.

01/02 - 06/02Etoile de Bessèges Tony Gallopin
05/02 - 08/02Vuelta a Mallorca Alejandro Valverde
05/02 - 10/02Tour of Qatar Daniele Bennati
09/02 - 12/02Tour Méditerranéen Simon Clarke
11/02 - 12/02Giro della Calabria Peter Sagan
15/02 - 19/02Volta ao Algarve Fabian Cancellara
15/02 - 20/02Tour of Oman Matthew Goss
18/02 - 19/02Tour du Haut Var Giovanni Visconti
18/02Trofeo Laigueglia Dario Cataldo
19/02 - 26/02Tour of South Africa Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg
19/02 - 23/02Vuelta a Andalucía Jelle Vanendert
23/02 - 04/03Le Tour de LangkawiUnfinished
25/02Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Tom Boonen
25/02Beverbeek Classic Steven Tronet
26/02Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne Fabian Cancellara
26/02GP di Lugano Joaquím Rodríguez
26/02Clasica de Almeria Matteo Trentin
28/02Le Samyn Gert Steegmans

Several top names are clearly in form already, as you can see. Tom Boonen got a psychological edge over his rival Fabian Cancellara by dominating the first cobbled classic of the year, Het Nieuwsblad.

His joy didn't last long though, since Spartacus took revenge with a solo victory in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne the next day, after crushing everyone on the paved sections. Will be fun to watch them battle in RVV and Roubaix later this year.

Boonen and Cancellara are going head to head already.

Alejandro Valverde also opened his victory account for the year, winning stages in both Spain and Portugal, along with the overall victory on Mallorca. His compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez also seems to be in shape for PN and Tirreno, after winning GP Lugano and finishing third in Andalucía.

Piti and Purito - both in form early.

Other notable performances include Matthew Goss' surprising overall triumph in Oman. The bonus seconds he got from winning every mass sprint was just about enough for him to stay ahead of Eros Capecchi by two seconds after the big mountain stage.

Goss was very successful down in the Middle East.

Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg surely also deserves a mention after netting four stage wins and all the jerseys in his home race, Tour of South Africa. His MTN team completely dominated there, with Arran Brown snatching four podium spots and a stage win, along with second place in the GC.

Reinardt lined up victories at home in South Africa.

The WTour rankings obviously haven't changed at all since the last check, as there hasn't been any WT race this month. Luis León Sánchez better enjoy his lead while it lasts, as he'll probably not be leading at the end of March.

The CTour rankings show just how successful Koretzky has been for the past few weeks. The strong results in Bessèges, Méditerranéen and Haut Var has really payed off in terms of points. The MTN duo Brown and Van Rensburg follows. We're also still going strong compared to the other teams.

Goss leads the CQ ranking after an amazing Tour of Oman, and very good results in the other Middle East race, ToQatar. Sánchez is still very well placed since January, as is Oman runner-up Capecchi. GreenEDGE leads the team rankings dominantly, after a great start of the season.
