January 20-22, 2013 - Tour Down Under, Part 2
Stage 4
Juraj Sagan was again in the break, took both mountain and both intermediate sprints. His mountain jersey is now safe for the rest of the race already. Along with his companions, he was caught shortly after the last mountain.
The sprint became a huge UniCredit domination. Haussler again had no problems to finish the job. And while Matthews confirmed his position as the second best sprinter, Marco Marcato used Haussler's slipstream to cruise to a surprising third place. And Simone Ponzi, Haussler's lead out, held everyone else off to finish fourth. Amazing day for the team!
Heinrich Haussler is the dominating figure of this Tour Down Under.
1 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | 3h13'36 | 2 | Michael Matthews | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Marco Marcato | UniCredit | s.t. |
Stage 5
No problem for the peloton to reel in the break around Stuart O'Grady and Pello Bilbao today. They were caught atop of the Willunga Hill, while crossing it the first time.
In the last couple of kilometers, UniCredit took contol of things and didn't let anyone go. Marco Marcato tried to lead out Haussler from the very front, but that costed him a lot of power. Haussler had to leave his slipstream very early, but this guy is just overwhelmingly strong at the moment. The only one that could follow him was David Le Lay (Cofidis), who already looked strong on stage two. The two got a 12' gap to a group of 24 lead by Grega Bole, in which Marcato and Ponzi were present. They secure their Top 10 places. Matthews stays in second overall.
Third stage win in a row, the overall should be his as well: Heinrich Haussler!
1 | Heinrich Haussler | UniCredit | 3h13'36 | 2 | David Le Lay | Cofidis, le cédit en ligne | s.t. | 3 | Grega Bole | Ferrari Cycling Team | + 12 |
Stage 6
The pack had a much harder time bringing the break back today. And while they seemed to have succeeded at first, but then it was Enrico Sanz (Movistar), who surprised the peloton in the last 10 kms. All of a sudden, he had an advance of a minute with 6 kms to go.
But we still had Markus Burghardt. The German rouleur did an incredibly high pace and Sanz was back just as the sprint started. Our sensational duo again had no opposition. Haussler continued where he left off and took the win, and Ponzi even managed to come in second, making the final stage a double win for us. Amazing!
This stage represents the whole race: UniCredit domination!

Well, we can hardly complain, can we? And we don't want to either! The whole team did a fantastic job, from the rather anonymous works of Dominik Klemme and Markus Burghardt, over Juraj Sagan and his mountain jersey to the all-overwhelming Heinrich Haussler. Two second places and then four stage wins in a row - that was just plain awesome. We're looking forward to his next races!

Just one word: domination
I hope the rest of the season goes as good as well

Welcome to the first of my newly-shaped monthly reviews:
NC | Australian Championships | Michael Rogers | SKY | NC | Australian Championships (ITT) | Michael Rogers | SKY | UWT | Santos Tour Down Under | Heinrich Haussler | UNI | 2.1 | Tour de San Luis | Lieuwe Westra | VAC | 1.1 | Grand Prix la Marseillaise | Daniele Callegarin | BMC |
Grand Prix la Marseillaise
1 | Daniele Callegarin | BMC Racing Team | 2 | Marco Marcato | UniCredit | 3 | Anthony Geslin | Saur - Sojasun | 4 | Yann Huguet | Argos - Shimano | 5 | Blel Kadri | Ag2r - La Mondiale |
The World Tour Ranking is of course exclusively shaped by the Tour Down Under, with Heinrich Haussler atop.
The same applies for the Team Ranking. With three men in the Top 7, UniCredit takes the lead in this ranking very early.
Haussler dominates here as well. Matthews and a strong Callegarin (8th Down Under, 1st GP Marseillaise) follow.
Same image here, UniCredit has already as much points as the next two teams combined. Ferrari has a good start in their debut season, mostly thanks to Grega Bole and Francesco Ginanni.
In the first month of the year already, many teams have announced whether or not they would continue to work with their current sponsors. Among those who don't, the most prominent names are Lampre and Katusha. Those teams will appear under new names next year.
It appears as though we won't see the distinctive pink jerseys anymore next year.
In contrary to that, many teams prolonged the contracts. Among them are the likes of Cofidis, QuickStep, Vacansoleil and Garmin. So we don't have to worry about the face of cycling changing too much.
Wild Cards for the Tour de France announced:
It took the organisators only two weeks to announce the teams for the 2013 Tour de France. The four wild card teams are: FDJ, Europcar, Ag2r and Vacansoleil. That means that among others, Orica won't be participating, thus also excluding Cadel Evans from the race. I bet that's not what the Australian was hoping for when he transfered to GreenEdge this winter.
Despite the relegation, FDJ will be able to participate in the Tour de France.
Samuel Sanchez announces end of career:
At the age of 34, Basque local hero Sammy Sanchez says enough is enough. He will bring the curtain down on his career at the end of this season. This is of course a huge blow to Euskaltel, but Sanchez stated that he'll do everything to provide the team with another successful year.
One of the established figures of cycling will leave the stage after this season. |

February 23, 2013
Hey folks,
I just wanted show some sign of life here. So here's a report about the current situation:
The team is doing a lot of racing on continental level througout this whole month. I'll present you the results in the next review, but as you might already guess, we've been mostly pretty successful. Currently, a squad around Roman Kreuziger and Peter Sagan is racing in Andalucia while Vincenzo Nibali continues his preperation for the Tirreno in Malaysia.
UniCredit's leader is currently preparing for his first season peak.
On another note, a lot of riders, including myself, are running out of contract. And while the likes of Simone Ponzi, Heinrich Haussler and my dear compatriots Dominic Klemme and Bastian Grünwald have entered contract negotiations, Mauro Finetto and Roman Kreuziger are still hesitating. They don't seem to be happy with their current roles in the team.
Will Mauro Finetto leave the team after several successful years?
Lastly, I wanted to inform you about another meeting I had with our team staff. It's been a while, since we lastly evaluated my skills (last August before La Vuelta, to be precise), and after several tests, the managers were almost astonished: I really worked hard during the winter break and I didn't relax either while the other guys started the season. In fact, I have made an enormous leap forward:
While I still have deficits on hilly terrain and in time trials, they told me that I was among the very best climbers at my age. With this in mind, I'm feeling even more comfortable looking forward to the rest of the season. And of course, this puts me in a stronger role in potential contract negotiations.
That's it again for the moment. Next up is the monthly review including the new results and rankings of February. And then, we're already at Paris - Nice and the Tirreno! So stay tuned!

Nerz can be an outside for a Top 5 in a GT now
And hopefully UniCredit can keep Finetto, he's a valuable rider.

One hell of a climber! Luckily, your Rec is high as well, what is a good thing for GT's. Hope your Sta improves, else you'll suffer in the longer stages.

It's cool to see how much Dominik has improved since the start of season one.
How much potential does he have left?

Thanks all for the comments
@ roturn: I know, right? I think he has the possibility for a top 10 at the Giro this year. He proved his GT abilities at the last Vuelta, but it all depends on the starting field.
@ valverde321: The thing about Finetto is that he's only the fourth sprinter at the moment, and his potential is limited. Add to that the fact that I want to weaken the team a bit... We'll see
@ sutty68: Definetely! There are few stage racers THAT talented around, so I guess he has the chance for lots of great results.
@ dienblad: Yep, he kind of specialized on his climbing, now he his other skills need to catch up. His Recuperation was always amazing.
@ Miguel98: I can assure, he won't stop at 73 or 74
@ Pellizotti2: Agreed. I recently looked up his stages of development, I would have never thought that I manage to keep it up that long
@ cio93: Don't worry, I won't tell you the exact potentials and max values Let me put it this way: He should develop into one of the best stage racers around, but never be such a beast that he can dominate everything. |
