Early Cobbles - 2015

TDU Stages 2,3 and 4

Stage 2
With no GC hopes i quick simmed.
Gasparotto and Dekker won clear, with Rojas leading a big group in 26" later.

Stage 3
Lotto were all over the lead out with 10km to go.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0001-7.jpg

Then there was the bump.....
Every single other main sprinter passe our train by...
So Boeckmans sprinted from 1100m... and straight into Vangenachten and Boonen...
A clear blocking tactic from OmegaPharma-Quickstep, which we did refer to the Commissars.
Greipel came though to win ahead of Degenkolb and Bos.
Boeckmans got clear space with 300m, and again peaked at 75km/h Angry
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0003-2.jpg

Stage 4
Arashiro was part of the 3 man break, taking the KoMs and first IS sprint.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0004-1.jpg

Caught with 3km to go, to was agonizing to watch...

Fortunatly the lead out was going well, giving Boeckmans a full 100m lead over Degenkolb, and 200m over Greipel.

Boeckmans kicked... and appeared to stall... his peak speed was 61km/h.
Comparison, Chavanel's peak speed at 3rd man was 66km/h.....

Degenkolb came close, but Greipel was in another league, over 10km/h faster in the finish to win.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0005-2.jpg

Comments; Stage 2 - nothing much to say, just saving energy
Stage 3 - Things were looking so good until the bump. Then OPQ blocked us. Boeckmans looked good but fell far short as a result, 7/10
Stage 4 - Fantastic ride by Arashiro! So unlucky, the break started mucking about for the finish too soon. The lead out was amazing today, fully sorted and organized. On the one day we get Boeckmans in position he (the game) lets us down. A win should have been easy, but 2nd is ok, 7/10 again.

Stage 5
Alabsini won a 6 man sprint atop Willunga hill.
Ponzi took the GC lead.

Stage 6
I tried to play this stage twice, it crashed twice, so i quick simmed
Greipel was quick again, ahead of Rojas and Guardini. Boeckmans was down in 12th.

GC Top 3
Ponzi KazMunayGas 19h53'53
Dekker Garmin-Sharp @1"
Albasini KazMunayGas @3"

Movistar will no longer sponsor a cycling team. Movistar have been part of the sport since 2011, but not for 2016. The team changed a lot this year, as is a real powerhouse. Santander have been linked with the position

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad + Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

Team; The team will be mostly the same for the two races.
Leader; Van Kiersbulck will lead both cobbled races.
Sprinter; Boeckmans will only ride KBK, as lead sprinter
Team Mates; Ladagnous, Balck, Petit, Gaudin, Veilleux, Rathe ... with Chavanel for Omloop only
(Hincapie would be in the team, but for some reason, when i go to selection screen he doesnt appear, no other races, no injuries he's not there, everyone else is... any ideas?)

Goals; Both races we aim to win. But as its most riders first race i'm just looking for good performances.

Race reports to follow...

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Litteraly ever major cobbles rider was here; Boonen, Cancellara, Flecha, Boom, Gilbert, Terpstra, Vanmarcke, Langeveld, Ballan, Pozzato and many more...
And they have all got more race days...

On with the racing.
Lots of early attacks flew, taking up the first 20-30km of racing.
OmegaPharma-Quickstep were keeping a close hold of most riders.
Eventually 4 riders got clear.
Wyss(SWA), Martens(CC), Schumacher(KAT), Dumoulin(ARG) were the lucky ones

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0001-8.jpg

A short while later a second group of 4 got away, eventually making the junction to form an 8 man break
The 4 were, Downing(GRS), Renders(VCT), Eijessen(LAN) and Serrano(MOV).

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0002-5.jpg

With 92km to go Haussler(SKT) and Durant(ACC) attacked, reaching the break a short time later. Making 10 up front.

With 60km to go Nuyens(B&O) attacked, taking Gatto(FER), van Lerberghe(JVC) and Waeytens(TSV) with him.
So that made a 13 man break. OPQ continued to make the pace, aided by Coca-Cola, Rabobank and Lotto-Eurosport
The break was caught with about 25km to go.
It all kicked off on the final cobblestones.
Boonen and Cancellara worked together to get away. This forced Van Kiersbulck to attack to try and bridge. Vansumeren(SWA) and Terpstra(RAB) went with him.

So with 15km to go things were like this; E1 Boonen and Cancellara, @29"E2 Terpstra, Vansummeren and Van Kiersbulck @1'00E3 a group of 14 including the rest of the favorites and Ladagnous

Van Keirsbulck had to do most of the chasing, but he just didn't have the power to pull back the leading duo, but it kept the E3 group at bay.

With 1km to go it was Cancellara leading out Boonen, and behind Van Keirsbulck was leading the chase.

Boonen cruised past Spartacus with 500m to go and take the win!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0003-3.jpg

Both Terpstra and Vansumeren sprinted round Van Keirsbulck demoting him to 5th. Needless to say we were not happy, as they did not help the chase just to steal the placings at the finish. Swatch and Rabobank made no friends today...

Comment; The team worked well together, staying out of trouble and keeping well positioned. Balck, Petit and Veilleux were the stars doing a lot of protection and pacemaking throughout the day. Van Kiersbulck showed strong spirit, but he struggled for fitness in the final stages. A good day still, 7/10 (which is becoming normal).

Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

Team News; Boeckmans replaces Chavanel as planned.
Balck, who is in his first Pro year cant handle the two back-to-back and is replaced by Jerome

Again every major cobble rider was here, along with Veelers and Cavendish as the main sprint threats.

Toady's break went away quickly, inside 10km.
Honig(CJP), de Kort(ARG), van Hoecke(JVC), Ghyllebert(WBC), Lavery(SKT), Wilkinson(SKY) made the 6 man move.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0001-9.jpg

The race ran smoothly until we reached the Oude Kwaremont...
The race exploded on the cobbled hill!
There were ten's of splits, several attacks, a few punctures and a crash!! all in 10seconds and in 1km of racing...

As we came over the top i noticed we had 5 riders in a front group of 19, without Boonen or Cavendish.
I made the snap decision in the team car, i was screaming to push hard now!
GOGOGOGOGOGO PUUUUUUUUUUUUUSH NOW!!!!!!!! NO BOONEN, YOU HAVE TO GO!!!

Rathe, Petit, Van Kiersbulck, Boeckmans and Veilleux all hit the front, nearly shattering the front group.
Ladagnous, Gaudin and Jerome were behind in the peloton.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0002-6.jpg

This was me trying to show the chaos...

With 60km to go Kump(LAN), Lander(LAN) and Hoogerland(KAZ) attacked.
At 55km to go the break was swallowed up by the leading group.
It was a fast race from the climb, the might of 5 Lottos vs. a chasing peloton...
We never stopped shouting in the car, willing the lads on, hoping we could force the surprise.
It was the final cobbles that killed us... Sapped the energy out of everyone except van Keirsbulck. At this point the peloton was only 1'00 down, so i called a halt to the pace.

So with 22km to go it was all back together (mostly)

Van Kiersbulck attacked with 20km to go!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/PCM0003-4.jpg

OmegaPharma-Quickstep chased hard to pull him back in only 3km later...
Then Cancellara attacked... and OPQ let him go!!!
This forced us back on the chase, finally killing us as Ladagnous ran out of juice. But we got Cancellara!

Bang!! Boonen launches a move!
Cancellara, Boom, Terpstra, Gusev, Ghyselinck, Ballan, Vansumere, Thomas and van Kiersbulck all tagged along...
I've got to say, OPQ are really pissing us off! Coca-Cola help us, and even Rabobank chipped in today, but not OPQ!
This move got clear with 8km to go..

Boonen launched the sprint, but was out done today by Thomas (thank god)!!

van Kiersbulck came home in 9th

Comment; Not sure how to deal with this race... We didn't win, so thats bad. We top10'd, so thats good. We were aggressive, so thats good. We were rash and hasty, so thats bad. Van Kiersbulck was the best man today, pulling on the front for well over 30km, then still getting in with the winning move! Two ratings today, team and Kiersbulck. Kiersbulck; 9/10 Team; 6/10

Before the season started we had 4 rival teams; Dexia-Belisol, OmegaPharma-Quickstep, Lanboukredit and Rabobank

After 3 races this is no longer true. We have 1 rival team, OmegaPharma-Quickstep... Dexia are only rivals in a sprint, and quite a good bunch of guys. Lanboukredit are a division below. Rabobank have helped us out a bit. OmegaPharma are just out to get us! Forget Boonen vs van Kiersbulck... now its Boonen vs. Lotto-Europcar

Quick note from me

I'm thinking of trying something different for the next few races (Dreidgasse, Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico)
Its the reporting style
While the current style is efficient and easy its a bit regular and a lot like other stories
If 2015 and a one-day focus wasn't enough, i'll have a report style to set me apart (and get some more readers/commenters)
The next 3 races, at least, will be done purely through a team car transcript
All the race will be the discussion and radio from the team car!
Un-edited access to the management and emotion of the race!
dont worry you will still know most of what is going and the result of course

just a heads-up and what do you think?

3daagse West Vlaanderen

Leader; Santos, may seem an odd choice but he has a great time trial, and thats whats needed
Sprinter; Goethals, hope for a top 5
Others; Hincapie, Van der Sande, Stenuit, Rathe
Just the 6 man team

Goals; Hopefully Santos can pull out a good TT and give us a reason to be here. Goethals will hope to grab a top 5. Mostly attacks though, as we are here for our sponsor...

Van Kiersbulck looks like he is coming in to a bit of form Wink

Ian Butler
Sounds like a great idea Smile Go for it!

Good result btw, in these races the most important thing is getting noticed for your sponsors Wink
