Tour de San Luis
Stage 5: Capital del Marmol Onix – Merlo (160.8km) Profile and situation before the start
This is another key stage in the race. The "Mirador del sol" will decide if Visconti stays in the leader jersey or if Chava becomes first.
The race
This is picture of the BOTD, it’s a group of 13men with no famous names in it.
Back in the peloton, the hard work was for Columbia, OPQS, Movistar and Caja Rural.
When the peloton approached the climb, Tom Boonen and Levi Leipheimer are doing a very hard pace.
And their work paid off, at the foot there were no more riders out in front.
From now on, it’s 8km at an average percentage of 6.4.
And just like in the 2nd stage, it was Visconti who attacked first.
Chava tried to react, but will he reach Visconti?
With 3km to go the gap is still 30”. It will be very hard even with some Flemish flags.
Visconti celebrates his 2nd stage win in Argentina. The clock start to tic and waits for Chavanel
When Chava reached the finish the clock says 1’17”. That simply is too much. This is not what we expected today.
Conclusion
We can say with 95% certainty that Visconti will win this race. Chava lost to much time today, and with only one stage to go it’s almost impossible to take that much time back. The only positive thing today is the fact that we are still leading the team classification.

Reaction Chavanel
What can I say? It’s over imo. I just don’t have the legs to follow Giovanni. Pffff, I feel tired. There is one hard stage left, I will try one more time but Movistar is extremely strong. The team had a plan, but this time lost wasn’t taken into account.
Reaction Boonen
I lost my point jersey today but that’s not important. The most important thing is that I have helped my teammates. Chavanel is in good form but Visconti is simply better at the moment.
Winners never quit, quitters never win.
It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish
Stage 6: La Huertita – La Carolina (192.0km) Profile and situation before the start
The last chance to do something in GC, but we don’t have great hopes for that: 1’31” is too much.
The race
Leipheimer decide to try his luck in the BOTD. He tried several times but never could stay away.
At the foot of the climbs everything is together. Movistar contraled the pace uphill and nobody tried to break away.
At the top, leipheimer took the points.
And Boonen took the points at the first intermediate sprint.
And not much later there was a break of 5 man.
But they never took more than 2’ and are back in the peloton when the road goes uphill again.
20 km to go and the front group consist of 18 men. Chavanel had a bad time and is struggling to hang on.
At the top Visconti (who else) is out in front. A French group is 30” behind: Chavanel, A. Geniez and J. Hivert.
Chavanel did all the work but they never reached Visconti.
Visconti wins his 3rd stage! Chavanel becomes 3rd after a hard pursuit comes 1’47” later.
Conclusion
It’s over for the GC. We played and lost. 2nd in GC is still a great result for Chavanel. All the congratulations to Visconti, he really was the strongest this week. Let’s hope T. Boonen could win tomorrow
Top 10
(Forgot to export the results again )
Reaction Leipheimer
The team asked me if I would try to go in the break, I tried but failed. On the last climb, I suffered a lot and tried to limit the losses on the flat.
It’s too bad that we didn’t won the GC. I did had the legs and Victonti was too strong for Chavanel. But the season is still young, and after tomorrow my focus will be on Paris – Nice.
Stage 7: San Luis – El Trapiche (181.9km) Profile and situation before the start
Last stage, last chance for Boonen.
The race
This is the BOTD, it’s a 5 men group. But they would fight until 3 km to go.
And it’s the number 2 in GC who reeled them in with 2.5km to go. Due to the hard pace of Chava the peloton split in several groups.
And after a great lead-out from Chicchi, Boonen did what he we expected from him: winning.
But there was also some bad news: Leipheimer crashed and lost some time. Luckily he didn’t broke anything

Reaction Chicchi
I’m glad this is over, it were 7 hard stages. Today was perfect for Tom, Chava brought me in a great position and I sprinted until the 300m mark and then tom finished it with ease.
Reaction Thomas (me)
Whoow another great win for Tom, he really is back. I can’t wait for the rest of the season.
Chava did also great this week, his form was good but Visconti’s form was better. I the classic he will be a great help for the team and he will have his chances. He deserves it.
We didn’t won any jerseys but we won the team classification and that’s also a great result imo.
My next races will be the Tour of Oman and Paris – Nice.
That strange call in my previous post? Ooh yea, it was the Belgium cycling federation. They asked me for the position as the nation coach. Carlo Bomans wants to quit so they searched for a new coach. I except the job on one condition: I want to keep my job at OPQS. So know I’m waiting on their answer if I can keep my job.
Results in January
Movistar really is the Team of January, with GC’s wins in Australia and Argentina and 6 stage wins. OPQS did not bad with 2 2nd places in GC and 5 stage wins.
But I have some bad news. I have done 2 races now and I think that making a story is nothing for me. It takes too much time. I enjoyed making it up to here, but I think it's better that I stop here. Sorry.

Winners never quit, quitters never win.
It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish
