Hi all,
Today the stage was a little more challenging than yesterday, but probably not hard enough to get a bigger gap for anyone. So a good accelaration would be an important factor for the stage win today, not really my strength.

PARIS-NICE - STAGE 3

The final break of the day featured the following riders: Willems, Vicioso, Ghyselinck and Martinez. We missed the right group today, although we tried it several times. But we weren't too disappointed, because we were more concentrated on keeping me in a decent GC-position today.
The biggest advantage the break had was about five minutes, but there were several teams controlling the pace of the peloton, so that the chances of the break succeeding never looked very good. Heading into the last 25 kilometres we started participating in the lead work of the peloton with one rider as well.

I didn't want to miss out on any deciding move by one of the favorites today, so I stayed right on Sanchez's rear wheel, when there were five kilometres left.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/62e9823a.jpg

I tried to keep a good position

Sky then increased the pace in the peloton. Happily I noticed I didn't really have any problems keeping up.

Sky leading the peloton

Two and a half kilometres later it was Hoogerland, who started an attack. J. Rodriguez jumped after him and tried to close the little gap.

Hoogerland with a small chance to win the stage

But the peloton, with Greenedge leading, nearly closed the gap after we passed the flamme rouge. I lost a few positions in the sprint, but there were no gaps in the field.
Hoogerland just had a little advantage of about fifty meters left and he used it with a strong sprint, he was able to hold off the bigger group of riders behind him to win the stage in front of a fast approaching Luis Leon Sanchez. I finished inside the peloton as twentyfifth.

As I knew that I don't have a good accelaration, it was clear that this stage wouldn't suit me too much. So my aim was not to lose any time today, with my 25th place I therefore was quite satisfied. I even moved up a few places in the GC, to 14th.

Your sincerely,
me

Hi,
Today we finished the next stage here at Paris-Nice. I have quite mixed feelings about it to be honest. My ambitions were pretty high, because we planned to maybe collect some seconds on the others today with a late attack on the small final climb, but it didn't really went as planned.

PARIS-NICE - STAGE 4

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/4.jpg

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/news-4.jpg

The start was again very hectic, many teams wanted in the break today. I was well guarded by Levarlet in the peloton right from the start of the stage.
Finally at some point Koren, Georges, Valentin and for our team Méderel were in the lead.
Turgot joined the group a little later before the first climb started.

Méderel came over the first climb in third place, Koren won the sprint. Also on the second climb, although Méderel put in a lot of effort, he only became third again.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/2579a203.jpg

Méderel just wasn't the strongest climber in the break today

On the next to last climb of the day Méderel even tried to save a little energy and didn't really sprint for the points anymore.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/671d9532.jpg

Koren won another KoM sprint

Most of the riders from the break were caught on the last categorized climb.
The last remaining escapee, Valentin, was caught just after the climb. Greenedge was leading the peloton, probably they had something planned for their leader Albasini. We came up to the front as well and started participating in the lead work.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/47ba4bf1.jpg

The peloton had Valentin in sight

When Kroon decided to attack with ten kilometres to go, I tried to follow him.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/a47c0b8d.jpg

I tried jumping after Kroon

I felt pretty good today and thought I should give it a try, because the final was a little hilly. But we didn't succeed, because the peloton was riding really fast.
Before the last small hill in front of the finish, the peloton slowed down a little and again it was Hoogerland, who tried an attack just 1.5 kilometres before the finish. He was able to create a little gap, like yesterday.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/8c341339.jpg

He was able to create a small lead

In the end it wasn't even as close as yesterday though, he actually got a 15 second time difference, which made him the new leader of the race.
I finished as 35th in the peloton.

I didn't lose time on anyone except for Hoogerland, who seems to be in a great shape, but I wanted to get something out of this stage and the team worked hard for me. I should have just waited a bit longer like Hoogerland did. So I am a little disappointed to be honest.
But now I am also completely focussed on tomorrows stage. It will be very important to have a good day and gain some seconds on the opponents.
At least the team could be satisfied, because we have been in the break again...

Your sincerely,
me

Thanks sutty. I don't worry at all! Pfft I will have some time later, so the next stage should be up tonight. It's the stage to Mende. Don't miss it, it's going to be excitingWink

Thank you fredinho Wink

Hi,
So as today was probably the most important stage of the race, we were really motivated. The plan was to get someone in the break and of course to keep me in contention for the GC.

PARIS-NICE - STAGE 5

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/5.jpg

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/p5-news.jpg

The break of the day was formed by Willems, Talabardon, Hernandez, Kangert, Gastauer and O'Grady. Todays stage offered quite a few KoM points, so we were happy to be in the break, but we also knew that we had to use this chance better than in the last days.
The first KoM points were won by Willems, he came through the checkpoint in front of Hernandez and Talabardon.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/e5a19a07.jpg

The first KoM sprint

The peloton didn't care about the break too much in the first part of the stage, so with 100 kilometres to go they had a lead of nearly 9 minutes.
But on the next climb midway through the stage the peloton started to increase the pace. At the top of the climb the same three riders appeared to be the strongest in the break, but this time in another order: Talabardon was able to become second behind Willems and in front of Hernandez.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/3938cfd2.jpg

The next third category climb, which came right afterwards, was then won by Hernandez in front of a consistent Talabardon. Willems only came in third place.
On the next and todays longest climb Talabardon decided to attack three kilometres before the top, because he still felt good and the group had gotten slower and slower.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/b441d463.jpg

Talabardon's attack

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/b0303fa0.jpg

He was able to get away from the group and won the mountain points

Now it was important to see, who would pass the top next as Talabardon was the virtual KoM leader... It was Gastauer, who was no threat in the ranking, after him all other escapees were already caught by the peloton, so Talabardon is the new KoM leader!
Talabardon was only caught short in front of the next climb, nine kilometres before the finish. He was completely exhausted by todays effort.
On the next to last climb a few riders tried to increase the pace, but there were several teams besides us leading in the peloton.
So there was no one in front of the peloton, when we were heading into the final climb up to Mende.
Right at the bottom T. Martin, Iglinskiy, Le Mevel and A. Schleck attacked.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/c7e878e3.jpg

The first attack on the last climb

But they were caught from B. Feillu, who showed a really strong performance again today, when there were two kilometres left to go.
When Andy attacked again 1.6 kilometres in front of the finish, I decided to follow, but I wasn't able to catch up to him.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/590920db.jpg

Schleck was going for the stage win today

The group behind Schleck was still pretty big. Under the Flamme Rouge Poels started a strong sprint in the front of the group. I jumped on his rear wheel and followed in his slipstream.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/b5e4892c.jpg

Heading into the final kilometre

We weren't able to catch Schleck anymore. He won the stage, but he was already several minutes behind in the GC, because he lost a lot of time in the previous stages.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/0af334aa.jpg

Andy Schleck wins the stage

I wasn't able to pass Poels anymore, but I was able to keep my good position right behind him to finish in third place. The group split up in the last kilometre and only fifteen riders finished with the same time.
Also current race leader Hoogerland was able to finish in that group and therefore defended his leader's jersey.

Top 3 - KoM

1Yannick TalabardonSaur - Sojasun23
2Kristijan KorenLiquigas-Cannondale18
3Frederik WillemsLotto Belisol16

Finally we were able to show what we are capable of! Although I wasn't able to win the stage, I am more than happy with the outcome. The third place in the stage helped me to move in the Top 10 overall and that was the goal all along. I will try everything to at least keep that position or even advance a little further.
Also Talabardon did an amazing job today. He was really strong and deserves to wear the jersey tomorrow. Hopefully we can help him keep it until the end of the race.
The next stage will be easier again, so we don't expect to see any attacks from the favorites, but who knows. Wink

Your sincerely,
me

sutty68
Great riding from Jerome and now sixth on the GC, things are beginning to look better and better Smile

I see I'm back in time for the end of this story. Last race was of a great level, keep going strong!

I'm glad there was a break, gave me time to catch up after my holiday and I can see the end live Wink

[Stupid me - I installed the Pcm-daily database before the stage. Grin Just in case you guys spot any of the new jerseysWink Sorry]

Hi,
today almost every stage result seemed possible - from a sprint of the better climbing sprinters to a small group of puncheurs. At the team meeting this stage was singled out as the one, where a break could have a very good chance of surviving, so we wanted a strong rider in the break.

Before the start a photographer took a nice picture of our KoM-leader

PARIS-NICE - STAGE 6

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/6.jpg

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/p6news.jpg

To make our plan come true Le Lay attacked together with Soerensen before the first climb started.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/146e2c96.jpg

Soerensen won the sprint for the points

The two were then joined by Meersman, Turgot, Vicioso, Lequatre and Navardauskas. Which made it a pretty strong group, so we were happy to be in it. The peloton stopped their chase soon after and let them get a bigger gap. The most dangerous rider for the KoM-ranking was Turgot with 10 points by the way.
The second climb was won by Le Lay, who was putting in more effort to win than on the first climb as we didn't want anyone to get too many points.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/fbf4888d.jpg

Le Lay with a strong performance

While Navardauskas was already in some serious trouble, Le Lay also won the next mountain prize, so that the lead of Talabardon in the overall KoM-ranking was pretty safe.
The biggest gap of the day was reached soon after that climb with about 7 minutes, but a few teams in the peloton already started pacing now, as Le Lay wasn't too far off in the GC with less than 2 minutes.
Le Lay was allowed to save some energy on the next KoM sprint for the finale, because no one could possibly steal Talabardon's lead today anymore - Vicioso won the max. points in front of Sorensen. They still had a lead of four minutes.
At the 20 kilometre sign Le Lay lost his virtual yellow jersey, with the lead being just a bit more than 1 minute.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/28f1e112.jpg

Le Lay and Sorensen tried to attack out of the group with 18 kilometres to go, but they didn't get away.

Back in the peloton B. Feillu once again delivered me in a perfect position right before the start of the last small hill 15 kilometres in front the finish.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/c9092c0a.jpg

We were riding in the front of the peloton

Race leader Hoogerland, who's team was working hard at the front all day was very attentiv as well.
Heading into the 1.5 kilometre long (or better short) hill we had nearly caught the escapees and I started an attack, as the speed from Vacansoleil wasn't that high anymore.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/da7ce91c.jpg

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/9313eb86.jpg

I attacked and was able to get a nice gap heading into the last downhill (I'm the small point in front of the motorbikeWink)

On top of the climb I had already past the break - Hoogerland had just reached them by then, but couldn't close the gap to me.
But the way to the finish after the climb was just a little bit too long and therefore the peloton was able to close the gap on the downhill. I finished inside the peloton.
Meanwhile Hoogerland was involved in a crash on the downhill !8! kilometres in front of the finish and lost a lot of time sadly, also Casar was involved in the crash. Not the way you want to move up some places in the GC Sad
But back to the racing: Hincapie than jumped out of the peloton and created a little gap on the downhill run-in to the finish, he was able to hold of the others and took a nice victory.
Engoulvent participated in the sprint, too, and was able to achieve a nice top 10 result for the team.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/62b35918.jpg

A happy winner

Top 3 - KoM

1Yannick TalabardonSaur - Sojasun23
2Kristijan KorenLiquigas-Cannondale18
3Ángel ViciosoKatusha Team17

There was not much more possible for us today: we were strong in the break, managed a top 10, secured our KoM-lead and I even moved up in the GC a little further. So this was a really good day for the team, but we were all very sorry for the misfortune of some riders in todays final ten kilometres.
I guess that's just cycling, but it's a pity to lose a leaders jersey because of a crash.
Anyways tomorrow will be better again. Wink

Your sincerely,
me

Ian Butler
Great effort that attack. it's a shame it didn't work, because it looks like it was one hell of an acceleration Wink

No time lost today, so still looking good Wink

Good job with Engoulvent in the sprint

Thanks for the comments, guys Smile

Hello everyone,
today was the last real stage before the concluding timetrial tomorrow.
The stage featured a really difficult climb, but there was still a long downhill to the finish afterwards. So the chances of an attack from one of the favorites weren't very big, but if I would see a chance I would definitely try my best.
Also there were a lot of KoM points to collect today and as we aim at defending the jersey we knew that we had to work hard today.

PARIS-NICE - STAGE 7

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/7.jpg

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/p7news.jpg

There were several attacks right from the start. After only a few kilometres quite a big group of nine riders got away from the peloton and had a gap of more than one minute very quickly. We missed the right moment and were not in the group, so we decided to chase after them, but they were pretty strong and rode fast, so we decided to try to get the gap as small as possible and then try to get one of our own in the group.
When the leaders were only about 45 seconds in front, Talabardon, the KoM leader, took matters into his own hands and closed the gap with an attack. He had to put in a lot of effort, though, chasing them down on his own.
The most important contenders for the KoM in the break were, next to Talabardon, Txurruka and Gastauer, with 4 and 12 points before the stage.
The first mountain sprint was won by Talabardon, he came over the top closely before Txurruka and Gastauer.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/e7d4e313.jpg

Talabardon got the most points here

The lead of the group had already gone up to 11 minutes! But it was still a long and hard way left to go...

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/6401403d.jpg

The next KoM sprint saw the riders pass in the same order.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/2e866a1c.jpg

On the third one Txurruka closely won in front of Talabardon and Gastauer.

They were still leading by 10 minutes, but there were also still 100 kilometres left to go.

i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh598/johannes-w/651bcd74.jpg

Gastauer took everyone by suprise with an early attack on the last climb.

Gastauer could hold off the others with his attack and won the last mountain sprint in front of Talabardon. This was it - Talabardon will be the winner of the KoM ranking of this years Paris-Nice.
On top of the climb they only had 4 and a half minutes left. Back in the peloton we already knew that it was going to be close. We weren't sure if they would get caught or not.
With ten kilometres left the group had a little bit more than one minute and a half in advance - they could make it if they work together now. Talabardon decided to try an attack five kilometres before the finish as he was one of the weaker sprinters in the break. Meanwhile the peloton stopped their chase as they didn't saw any chance to catch the break anymore. So the winner would come out of that group.
Talabardon was caught when the others started their sprint, he was completely exhausted after his solo effort in the first part of the stage.
As expected Dumoulin was the strongest sprinter from that group, he was able to take a nice win here in Nice. Wink

Top 3 - KoM

1Yannick TalabardonSaur - Sojasun47
2Ben GastauerAg2r La Mondiale29
3Amets TxurrukaEuskaltel - Euskadi24

We have won the KoM at Paris-Nice - that's a great win for a smaller team like us! But the celebrations will have to wait until tomorrow night, because I have to focus on the time trial now... I can't wait for it to finally start. The gaps between the favorites are still pretty small, so almost everything is still possible in the time trial.
I'll be writing all about it in my blog tomorrow - wish me luck. Wink

Your sincerely,
me

Ian Butler
Go for the podium! This is exciting Pfft
