i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/ausflag1.jpg Adam Phelan

Phelan's development has been very good so far this year and he comes into tgis race as 1 of the 2 central riders for JB-HIFI. He is slowly becoming a better climber, and will be able to showcase his skills here in Trentino.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/spainflag.jpg Rafael Valls

Our weapon, Valls will be our main rider to take the GC and young rider rankings. A neat climber, the route suits him perfectly despite the first stage ITT. He has had a terrific season thus far, Winning the overall and the final stage at the Vuelta Mallorca, his last stage race. He also posted fantastic results in Langkawi.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/franceflag.jpg Kenny Elissonde

Elissonde comes into the race as a valuable domestique for when the road begins to rise. He has had a steady start to the season and will work for Phelan and Valls until he can work no more.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/nlflag.jpg Nick Van der Lijke

One of the team's brightest rising stars, he will give all he has to offer to Valls during every single stage, on every single climb to keep him positioned properly, especially before a climb begins. He will hopefully ride strongly, as Valls and the team rely on his abilities.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/nzflag.jpg Patrick Bevin

Tipped as New Zealand's next Greg Henderson, Bevin's job here is to provide support to who may need it during the flatter sections of a stage, and undertake general domestique duties.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/ausflag1.jpg Glenn O'Shea

O'Shea is a promising young Australian rider who won a stage in Langkawi earlier in the season. His role in this race is similar if not identical to Bevins. He will do a majority of the hard work on the front of the peloton if a break gets too much leeway.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/ausflag1.jpg Johnnie Walker

Walker tends to be overshdowed by other more successful riders in races, so he has a chance here to latch onto a break or two and see where it takes him.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/ausflag1.jpg Seth Taylor

Taylor is a young puncheur who was scouted late last year by us and promptly given a contract. It is his job to show us that that was the right thing to do by working like there's no tomorrow to keep his teammates safe and opponents at bay.

Part 4 yet to come. (I'd do it all at once but its very time-consuming)

Stage 1

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trentprof1.jpg

The first stage of the race is sure to be nerve-racking for most riders. The weather forcast shows that this region is expecting a large storm to pass over during the time the ITT is on, so riders will have to be extra cautious and not get caught out. We have no real Time Trialist here, so our team will just try their best and hope for a good time. Valls and Phelan will aim to not lose a great deal of time to other contenders.

Stage 2

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2prof.jpg

This stage is classified as hilly and will be very challenging. A large group of riders should enter the final climb together, and the GC contenders might test their legs on the climb, but won't go extremely hard because of the intense 2 stages that follow.

Stage 3

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3prof.jpg

The Fai della Paganella. It will be the daunting sight as the riders descend down before a sharp, stabbing kick straight up, delivering them to hell. This will be a trechourous stage, anyone and everyone will have to dig deep to take anything out if this nightmarish stage. It's not over yet, and tomorrow doesn't get any easier, either.

The Final Test

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent4prof.jpg

The final stage of the brutal Giro del Trentino - end by the end of this stage, there won't be a single rider gasping for air after the finish. The other top 10 riders will be attacking and pushing insanely hard to crack the leader and take the leader's jersey to win. This will be a race hopefully of epic proportions!

What'd you guys (if anyone actually reads this, besides sutty, of course Wink) think of the preview?

Very good preview. But this much work for only the Giro del Trentino? It's your choice, but I'd save this work for the WT-races (but you have to be invited for them of course).

@ Zoom123: Thanks Grin

@ dienblad: It's one of our major goals for the season. We're also not entering any WT-races this year either, so this is a pretty big race for us where we hope to perform. Vuelta Portugal is also another major race that'll have a presentation somewhat like this Smile

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent1pfor.jpg

The opening stage of the Trentino, the calm before the storm. It's a 14km ITT, our team's achillies heel. Adam Phelan and Rafael Valls hope to perform well as they are both our best bets on a good result in this race.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent1-2Gusev.jpg

Vladimir Gusev is riding well in a very wet and windy first stage. He clocks the second best time at the intermediate point, and begins to increase his speed. He round the final corner and sprints his way to the line! He now holds the best time of 18"46'.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent1-15grabsch.jpg

Grabsch, former world ITT champion and current German champion is the next contender for the stage to start. He is looking very strong at the intermediate point with the 4th best time. He keeps a tremendous speed and comes in 6 seconds aster than Gusev! 18"40' is his time.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent1-2Grivko.jpg

Andriy Grivko went into the checkpoint in 18th and didn't look like he was up to much. He went without much notice and clocled the best time of the day, beating the German Champ Grabsch by just 2 seconds! Time: 18"38'.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent1-5Valls.jpg

Valls begins his ride. he will be looking to limit his losses to his rivals in today's stage.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/vallstrentttfinish.jpg

Rafael Valls finishes. He is 77th, with a time of 19"33', 55 seconds behind Grivko. He will have to redeem himself in the mountains, it isn't a bad result but he could have done better.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/NibalitrentTT.jpg

Nibali rounds a corner into the minal kilometer as the last man on the road. He comes in with the 9th best time, 18"51'. Grivko takes a surprising stage win! Phelan is our best finisher who rode to a strong 22nd. Valls came in 83rd, as explained above. The GC contenders rode without losing hardly any time to each other with the exception of Pozzovivo in 49th, who finished 42 seonds down on Grivko.

The First Test

Giro del Trentino Stage 2

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2prof.jpg

Today's stage is probably the easiest of the next three stages. We will look to leep good placement in the peloton going into the final hill so we don't lose time on any of the other contenders.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-1.jpg

An early failed attempt at a breakaway

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-2.jpg

124km left
A break is finaly formed. The four riders are Craig Lewis of Champion System, H.Frusto (NIP), G.Priedler (TT1) and A.Serov (RUS).

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-3.jpg

Lewis leads the break over the first mountin point, 2nd is Frusto and 3rd Priedler. The gap to the peloton is 1"39'.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-4.jpg

96km left
P.Cieslik (BGZ) joins the break. He is a good Polish climber and might be aggresive.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-5.jpg

At the only sprint point of the day, K.Vandewalle of Quickstep promptly joins the breakaway group before going off the front to take the sprint ahead of Frusto and Priedler.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-7.jpg

59km left
Serov of Rusvelo is reeled in from the break. A.Efimkin (TT1) and M.Macarto (VAC) go on the attack.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-8.jpg

51km left
Adam Phelan has been dropped! Him and Elissonde are caught out in a major split leaving just 66 ridersin the main group and are both trying hard to get back on.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-9.jpg

40km left
Up front, Vandewalle and Cieslik drop there breakaway companions and go for the win themselves. They're going to have to ride hard to stay away though with a gap of only 1"23'.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-10.jpg

26km left
Phelan tries all he can to regain contact with the peloton with Elissonde but they are both now heavily fatigues and at risk of dropping out of this group. No one has or will help them.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-11.jpg

20km left
Just under the 20km to go banner and Vandewalle and Cieslik are both bought back. They fought with courage but couldn't make it.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-12.jpg

15km left
The front group enters the final climb, with Valls and Van der lijke in a good position.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-13.jpg

12km left
Scarponi (LAM) attacks! Jerome Pineau will try to go with him. Valls is feeling good and putting in a hard effort but for some reason is going backwards despite feeling strong?

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-14.jpg

5km left
Scarponi holds a slender 27' ;ead over the other riders who aren't making any effort to bring him back.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-15.jpg

3.5km left
Race leader Anrdiy Grivko and Luca Ascani attack and try to reach Scarponi who is still 20' ahead. It's going to be a close finish! Meanwhile, Valls is strangely dropped and cant get back on to the front group. He was feeling good but for some reason couldn't keep contact.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-16.jpg

1.4km left
Scarponi still has a small gap to the group and Nibali, Faili (FAR) and Pozzovivo are closing in fast!

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-17.jpg

Scarponi takes a victory at the line with Callergain in 2nd. He rode nicely to finish first despite not getting a gap to his main rivals.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-18.jpg

Valls reaches the line 1"8' down, not a huge loss, but enough to cause a bit of panic amongst the team.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent2-19.jpg

And surprisingly, one of the main contenders of the race, Janez Brajkovic seems like he lost contact! He loses 2"12', Astana are obviously going for the win with Grivko.

The Colossal Climb

Giro del Trentino, Stage 3

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3prof.jpg

This is the stage the team has been tirelessly training for. On this stage, the riders climb the mammoth and unforgiving Fai della Paganella not once, but twice. Rafael Valls has said his goal is to get into the top 10 overall by the end of thee stage and will ride defensively. If this falls through, he will attack like a madman tomorrow.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/Trent3-1.jpg

Today, our own Adam Phelan and Nick Van der Lijke try a few times to establish a break and eventually do. They are joined by Cusin (TT1), Locatelli of Clonago and Rasmus Guldhammer (CWO).

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-2.jpg

This screen is an indication to show you were all our riders were and how they were feeling, due to the lack of screens, as they begin the ascent of the Paganella for one last time.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-3.jpg

Szmyd and Sarmiento (LIQ) are pushing an unrelenting pace at the front as the rain begins to fall. This climb is going to be intense.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-4.jpg

Valls is clinging onto the back of the front group, he is now determined to ride at his own pace. Other riders in this group are Nibali, Szmyd, Sarmiento (LIQ), Scarponi, Bertagnolli (LAM), Pozzovivo, Brambilla, Pirazzi (CSF), Monguzzi (UTN), Kierslovski, Kessiakoff and race leader Grivko (AST), Velits (QST), Hoogerland (VAC), Ascani (FAR) and Vladimir Gusev (KAT).

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-5.jpg

Scarponi is now pushing a hard pace, with a few riders dropping off the back. Pozzovivo and Nibali try to get onto his wheel.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-6.jpg

Pozzovivo attacks with Nibali in his wheel with 3.7km to the finish. Sacrponi is riding his own pace still.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-7.jpg

Valls is riding well and unfortunately is one of the casualties of the front group with such a high pace being set. Kessiakoff and Gusev are also going backwards.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-8.jpg

Scarponi goes into the final kilometer with Kierslovski and Nibali behind. He has a 17' gap to them and is still increasing his speed as the gradient begins to rise.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-9.jpg

Grivko comes under the 1km to go banner with Velits on his wheel 2 minutes behind Scarponi. Brambilla and Sarmiento are in the distance. Grivko has nothing left and is swaying side-to-side violently to try and make ground on these trecherous roads.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-10.jpg

Scarponi wins and almost makes it look easy. He was by far the best rider today and is showing why he is the favourite to win the Giro di Italia.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-11.jpg

Nibali and Kierslovski arrive 17' later behind Scarponi.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-12.jpg

Valls is riding hard trying to limit his losses behind Gusev. Behind him is Kessiakoff.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent3-13.jpg

The trio finish just over 3 and a half minutes back. Valls gave it everything today, he wasn't in the best form and still managed a nice 14th place in a stage he described as "What I think hell would be like". He also moves up 14 places in the GC!

The Finalé

Giro del Trentino, stage 4

(About 10 screenshots have gone missing, they were really important ones too. I'm going to take 2 each time instead of one from now on, Sorry Frown)

Another hard day, where no one will be able to hide. Valls will conserve energy before attacking on the final climb with 10-15km to go. Everyone else will work for him.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent42.jpg

The break forms, Schumacher (CWO, Cieslik (BGZ), Cominelli (Idea) and maggioni (UTN) make the cut. Schumacher takes the uncontested sprint.

91km left
More riders join on to the front group, none are real threats for a stage win or the overall.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent44.jpg

70km left
Brajkovic and Ovechkin (RUS) attack.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent45.jpg

60km left
The two quickly join the break and go straight to the front.

39km left
Van der Lijke leads Phelan as he attempts to pace him up the second catergorised climb.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent47.jpg

Brajkovic leads the break over the top of the climb, Cominelli is second and the consistent Cieslik in third.

Leading into the final climb, Wyss, Pirazzi, Losada and Failli try their hand at attacking.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent49.jpg

15km left
The peloton is now down to just 45 riders, 4 of them being from our team. All the notable favourites are here.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent491.jpg

12km left
Valls is getting paced up the final climb by Phelan, Elissionde, and Van der Lijke. Brajkovic is all alone up front now with a 4 minute gap back to this group.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent492.jpg

9km left
The attacking begins! Pozzovivo is the first to try and distance himself from Scarponi. Kierslovski, Nibali and Phelan follow.

i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o487/Edenb95/trent493.jpg

7km left
Scarponi is forced to attack. Szmyd follows. Phelan has hit the wall and lost ground, and once again despite feeling good, Valls is going backwards again.

And the winner of the stage is...

Directuer's Comments

A 14th place overall with Valls is nice, but I feel the team could have done better. They rode too defensively, and in the end all Valls could do was set his own pace and try to hang on. This was our biggest and most competitive race we've entered so far and a learning experience for all involved (Except maybe Valls, he has ridden the Tour before). Phelan showed promise, and Elissonde rode well. Our next race is the Vuelta Asturias, another major sponsor objective where we will field a strong team.

@ sutty68: I wish he could have, but the attack by Pozzovivo made Lampre up the pace too much for him.

Not a bad race at all for Valls, if we consider the names that finish in front of him in the GC.
