I can make a bet that you cant spell Rabo raider Denis Menchov name has russians to that the correct Dutch spelling for Menchov is : Denis Mentsjov.
The translation from Cyrillic to western alphabet differs per country. In English it's Menchov, in Dutch it's Mentsjov, because there are no real standards. All Russian or Eastern European names are spelled differently in Dutch then in English, and also different again in Polish for instance, and even more different in Japan
There is nothing 'wrong' about Denis Menchov if you spell it that way in an English newssite or paper. However, spelling Menchov on a Dutch site or newspaper is wrong. Same goes for Popovych (Popovitsj in Dutch), and many others. Those are our languague rules when translating from Cyrillic alphabet.
You might think it's wrong, but these are standard Cyrillic alphabet translations that are 100% correct.

not really, for one simple reason: the latin alphabet is also official in most eastern countries.
if you look at Menchov's passport or ID card or whatever, I believe you'll see it spelt twice: in cyrillic AND in the latin alphabet. so, there is a way. which way it is exactly, I don't know, but I'm inclined to believe Guido, as he's Estonian

No there are some special rules about translating cyrillic names. It was even confirmed by some professor. I mailed our newspaper a few times about Russian/East-European names and they had the same story. It's very complicated and I'm not the expert who can really explain well.
But in Dutch it's definately Mentsjov, not Menchov. |

This is strange if they have some kind of agreement of russian names...I remember when soviet union hockey team..first came out latin letters names on theyr shirt those looked ridiculos..some "disturbed" mind has been working with those I belive that managers should just tell player wich number they have..because even they cant unsderstand what those mess meens.
Talking about latvia..it's easy there whatever tour name is just but extra s in the end..and they call and right your name this way..

Alex Rasmussen is not ready for that kind of challenges yet. And the route doesn't fit him either. |

Sorry for (again) not sticking to the actual subject, but I have to agree with Ruben.
There is NO official international version for russian names. As simple as that.
It may be Menchov in the USA/UK/Spain, but it's Menschow in German.
The spelling in each country is supposed to resemble the actual russian pronunciation - that's all there is to it.
And yes, I know what I'm talking about I've spent 6 months of my life in a Russian family and school in 2002 (Moscow).

well if you think that was off topic listen to this:
while we are on the subject of russia i believe that it should be split into half or 1/4 and 3/4. Russia is counted as a european country yet over half of it is in asia. So i reckon that it should be split in half, i also dont know how isreal is european

Isreal gets to play with us europeans cause nobody of their neighbours likes them. Some even don't consider Israel to be an independent country.

And some may not consider you a reasonably intelligent person. Yet, you are being given the chance to raise your voice on this site.

have you been there?
if the answer is no, don't ever go there. I haven't ever, but I've met literally dozens of Israelis. they're scary.
they're taught from birth that Israel is the greatest country on earth and Israelis are chosen by God. that Israel is a benevolent country that knows best and the only reason the Israeli government doesn't wipe out every arab from the globe is that they're magnanimous and choose to let those "animals" live.
They believe that because it's all around them since birth. it's a belief just like the one that the sun will rise every day. they wouldn't dream of thinking otherwise.
it's just like catholicism in Poland. it's very scary.
also, the fact that they tear down buildings all over the place with the inhabitants inside them just because they're palestinians doesn't exactly bode well for them either......same goes for shooting arab kids in the street for fun
