Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-13.jpg

Ian: "This five stage race starts with a flat-ish stage which is interrupted by a short, steep climb that must be tackled three times. It looks good for a breakaway here unless strong teams really want a bunch sprint."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-10.jpg

Ian: "Our team has no out and out leader here but the time trial on stage four makes Iker the best shot realistically. Today it will be up to me or Andy Tennant to get in to the break, while Rene will wait for a potential bunch sprint."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-8.jpg

Ian: "This is a very important race for me as I need to build my fitness up for the races to come. I will be going for the break today and if I do make it, I'll have to see how well I'm climbing on the first hill before making a decision on what to do next."

Ian: "AG2R are the only big team here but United Healthcare should have a good shot if Sutherland has the form. The Portuguese teams look dangerous and I think Chuzhda at Accent could be worth a bet. With no stand out favourites, this should be a great, close race, even if the route may not allow for it."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-7.jpg
On the team's first day in Spain this season, the weather was very typical and Bibby was keen to make the most of it as he was the third man to attack on the stage. He was keen to make up for lost time after missing the race in France last week.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-5.jpg
Every man and his dog wanted to get into the break though and as it swelled to seventeen riders, Bibby sat at the back conserving energy as he knew that the massive group would be brought back.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-6.jpg
This sensible riding allowed Bibby to be the source of the successful breakaway with five other riders. They built up an advantage of six minutes over the peloton before the three climbs at the end.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0007-6.jpg
Great work over the climbs made it certain that this group would make it to the end. With ten kilometres to go, they had a gap of two minutes to the peloton. Bibby had done a lot of work on the climb and needed to recover.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0008-5.jpg
Into the sprint and it was Bagues in the worst position with Van Hecke, Cano, Bibby, Romero and Orengo queued behind him. Now it was about timing and with 1.2km to go, the sprint really started as everyone went round Bagues.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0009-6.jpg
It was the Belgian Van Hecke who cruised to the win for Topsport with Bibby in a solid but unlucky second place. Cano took third whilst the peloton was led home by Petrov 1'23 later. All riders except one finished in this group.

Ian's View

"Damn... Well that wasn't too bad I suppose, but it's always gutting to finish second. I was struggling a bit up those climbs and I was really blowing at the end but luckily I was able to sit in the wheels on the final descent and run-in and I recovered enough to have a proper sprint. It was nice to be given the freedom to attack and now I have the points jersey to show for it. I'm two seconds down on the GC, so if I can somehow win a sprint tomorrow, I could be in yellow! Tomorrow looks a lot easier but it is over 200kms so it will be about stamina, which could be a problem for me. Hopefully, the team will look after me Wink"

Great start in Spain for Mr Bibby, let's hope it gets better for him Wink

Unlikely to get better than that, but he'll give it a go! Grin

Interesting story. Have you touched up Bibby's potential so he can become a GT Leader, because i don't think he has a lot of potential from what i remember.

brewers90
Thanks Freitas.

@franki, he probably won't become a GT leader, but you'll have to wait and see how good he becomes Wink

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-14.jpg

Ian: "The main challenge of this stage is the distance. It's over 200kms and there are some steep rises near the end which will hurt the legs. However, it should still end in a bunch sprint."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-10.jpg

Ian: "We have no real hope of getting a top result today so we'll be trying to save energy and make sure I get to the end still in second. Mandri will be free to go for the sprint but he won't have much of a chance against the quick men here."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-11.jpg

Ian: "Obviously, after yesterday, I am now a protected rider and I will simply be trying to get to the end of the stage in the peloton. That is all."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-9.jpg
It may be the only time this season that Ian Bibby gets to wear the sprinter's jersey but the Brit was enjoying himself, spending a lot of time chatting to the guy who beat him yesterday, Van Hecke.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-8.jpg
A difficult day was made easier by a very small breakaway. Just four riders, none of whom were particularly strong, went on the attack. Their only goal was surely to get some exposure for the sponsors.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-6.jpg
And over the short climbs at the end of the stage, the peloton, driven on by AG2R and Landbouwkrediet had the escapees in sight. The four leaders were clearly running on empty after a long day out front.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-7.jpg
AG2R showed everybody why they're a World Tour team as Ravard edged out Commeyne and Drujon with three other riders from the French team in the top ten. Mandri finished 13th with Bibby finishing safely inside the bunch.

Ian's View

"That was easier than it should have been with such a small breakaway but had it been any harder I could have kissed goodbye to second place. I was struggling like hell over those little climbs at the end and I'm very thankful to JMac, Erick and Faiers for looking after me and keeping me up at the front. My fitness isn't good enough right now and tomorrow's hilly stage and summit finish will almost certainly see me retire my green jersey and start working for the team again."

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-15.jpg

Ian: "The Queen stage of the race has two climbs including one up to the finish. Positioning and timing your attack/sprint will be key here. For us it could be a very long stage"

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-10.jpg

Ian: "We're going to have to play it by ear today. The guys will be looking after me but it comes down to whoever is strongest on the final climb out of Camano and Mandri as to who goes ahead and leads our charge today."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-12.jpg

Ian: "Yesterday's difficult stage has taken its toll on me and I should really struggle today. I just need to go at my own pace on the final climb and limit my losses. My goal is a top ten overall and I believe I can still do it."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-10.jpg
The break took a while to form and when it did, it contained seven riders. Frattini of UnitedHealthcare was the best climber in there amongst a host of small Spanish and Portuguese teams.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0004-9.jpg
The breakaway was brought back easily and as we hit the final ascent, Sutherland was the first to attack and the favourite for the race built up a reasonable lead but the pace in the very small peloton was very high and he was soon caught.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-7.jpg
With three kilometres to go, Sanchez Pimienta of Caja Rural was the next to give it a go. This attack looked much better and all he could do now was keep pedalling with the flamme rouge in sight.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-8.jpg
And the rest of the peloton caught him too late and the Spaniard could celebrate a great win on home soil. Ovechkin, Rutkiewicz and Deignan were next over, with Camano Endura's highest finisher in 19th. Bibby battled like crazy to a solid 29th.

Downing Shows Consistency in France

Despite not getting any top five finishes, Endura had a reasonably successful week as the team took part in three one day races in France. The first was Paris-Camembert Lepetit and Russ Downing sprinted to a solid sixth place as the breakaway made it to the end, Vichot beating Delfosse and Huzarski to take the win. Two days later in the GP de Denain, it was a bunch finish with Vachon taking the win for Bretagne ahead of exciting talent Demare and veteran Schulze. Downing came home seventh. Finally in the Tour du Finistere, a superb solo ride by Spanish climber Jesus Hernandez gave Saxo Bank the win. Bichot escaped the peloton to finish second, with Downing taking seventh again on the uphill sprint. JTL couldn't replicate his form from earlier in the season but led out Russ and faded to 17th.

Race Preview

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0001-16.jpg

Ian: "The all-important time trial. It's only ten kilometres so the gaps won't be that big but a little climb in the middle will hurt anyone whose legs are on the wane."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-10.jpg

Ian: "Our best shot today is Andy Tennant as he is in some great shape at the moment. He'll definitely be looking for at least a top ten. I'm hoping for a top fifteen but my position doesn't really matter, it's about time."

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0002-13.jpg

Ian: "My ever improving shape is contrasting with my ever decreasing energy levels after the horrific three days I've had. Nevertheless, I just need to beat Romero and Augustyn, neither of whom are noted TT'ers, to reach the top ten."

Race Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0003-11.jpg
The first competitive time was set by Filipe Cardoso of the Efapel team. He beat the early pacesetters by ten seconds and stayed there for quite a while.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0005-8.jpg
The first one to beat him was Tennant, who knocked a whole seven seconds off the Portuguese rider. That certainly gave Andy a shot at a top ten today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0006-9.jpg
But Andy's time lasted barely five minutes as the Belgian all-rounder Kevyn Ista of Accent Jobs lowered the benchmark by six seconds. The former Cofidis man would be hard to beat now.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0007-7.jpg
The Russian RusVelo team had a couple of chances to get a good result today. The first was sprinter Alexei Markov, who was quickest at the checkpoint, but slipped behind Ista at the finish by just one second.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0008-6.jpg
Surprisingly, it was AG2R's Slovenian rider, Gregor Gazvoda who eventually knocked Ista off his perch with a time of 14'33, two seconds quicker than the Belgian.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0009-7.jpg
The Portuguese teams have been everywhere in this race and today was no different. LA's Jose Mendes was following Gazvoda and ended up going one second slower than him. Second place.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0010-4.jpg
Now it was Endura's best GC hope, Ian Bibby out on the course. He was quick up the climb to the checkpoint, but faded slightly to a 14'48, which was well inside the top twenty. More importantly, he easily beat Romero and Augustyn and a top ten awaited him tonight.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0011-5.jpg
The pre-race favourite, Rory Sutherland has been largely disappointing so far after his weak attack failed yesterday. The UnitedHealthcare man continued that today with a 14'38, only good enough for a provisional sixth place.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Ian%20Bibby/PCM0012-4.jpg
The Portuguese hadn't finished yet and this time it was Hugo Sabido, also of LA Antarte, who was at it. He nipped undrneath Gazvoda's time by two seconds and it looked like he'd stolen victory at the last.

But the Russian TT specialist Artem Ovechkin had the last word. The penultimate rider on the course blazed round in a scintillating 14'29 to take the stage win by two seconds. He also smashed Sanchez Pimienta to take the lead of the race and, barring accidents, he will take the win here.

Race Result

The game crashed before I could export the results unfortunately, so you'll have to make do with screenshots for now. I'm afraid you will have to wait until after the final stage for the overall classifications but Bibby is in tenth now.

Ian's View

"Well, I was a bit slower than I was hoping for but a top twenty is not bad at all. Also, I did enough to move back into the top ten which is all I could really hope to achieve after yesterday. I just want this race to finish now though as my legs have just about had enough of the punishment. Congrats to Andy today with a ninth place. Good effort mate."
