Stage 5
A real mountain stage today, complete with mountain top finish. Looks to be the decisive day for the GC, as the gaps will be too big for the short TT to matter. All eyes are on Rujano, Nibali and Gesink.
The start of this stage is very fast. At the foot of the first KoM climb there's no decisive gap yet. A group of 16 riders, amongst them Failli, has a 44" advantage over the pack, but is quickly chased down on the climb. But as the climb flattens out a bit Failli attacks and is only followed by Bertagnolli.
These 2 now get a nice gap, Failli takes some mountain points. But as Bertagnolli joins him it becomes clear the the Lampre rider won't do any work. He simply refuses to take the lead.
On the downhill from the first KoM Nibali crashes and has to get his bike checked at the car. He can stay in the peloton without problems though.
Failli doesn't put in a lot of effort naturally, but the gap grows to 5' anyway. But the slow pace in the pack incites more riders to attack. Morabito and Kashechkin try to bridge, and somewhat later Florencio tries the same.
Failli also takes the intermediate sprint. He and his backpack have been joined by Morabito and Kashechkin. These 4 still hold 2'18" over Florencio, 4'56" over another attacker, Rohregger, and 5'31" over the pack.
Up comes the first big climb of the day, the Piano Roseto. Lampre start chasing now back in the pack and so Morabito and Kashechkin push on up front. Early in the lcimb this leads to Failli being dropped. On the 5th race day he isn't too fresh anymore and can't keep the pace.
Kashechkin is the first to pass the summit. Their advantage on chasing attackers has grown and the pack has also lost ground, they're back 6'38". The pack has been reduced to 58 riders as well, with only Ascani there for us.
And it becomes clear the the front trio will battle it out for the stage victory, unless one of the favorites burns up the Prati di Tivo. Morabito is the first who puts in a try.
But this costs him dearly as he's dropped 2 km later.
Meanwhile there's some bad news as Guardini crashes on the descent of the Piano Roseto. As there's nothing left for him in this Tirreno he decides to abandon.
Bertagnolli keeps up his wheelsucking and starts the sprint from Kashechkins back. He's clearly saved something today (!) and takes the stage.
In the big pack all favorits just look at each other. There are no big attacks, just the final acceleration in the last 2 km. Ascani had been holding up well so far, but is empty now and has to hang back a bit, losing some time.
Bertagnolli and Kashechkin weren't that far off in the GC and move up quite a bit. Ascani manages to control the damage and keeps a nice top 10.

Stage 6
A tough hilly circuit today, the final ascent will be taken 6 times. The usual suspects are named before the race, but this Tirreno has proven to be hard to predict.
Determined to get someone in the break who can finish it off both Pozzato and Gatto try to get into the break. After one failed try Pozzato crashes after being caught. He can continue inside the peloton, but Gatto will be the main man now.
After 70 km of riding he tries again and now succeeds. But with 100 km to go he'll have to do it solo.
At the start of the first ascent of the hill on the circuit Gatto has gained 3'25". On the ascent of the hill Freire attacks and will chase for 2 laps before he joins up with Gatto.
At the 2nd to last ascent they hold 2' over the pack, who have seriously pushed up the tempo. The peloton is decimated as well, although no big names are dropped.
At the summit of this climb Tiralongo decides to try and bridge solo.
But on the descent he gets caught again. But this might have caused just enough disruption. Freire and Gatto still hold 1'13" and there's only 7,5 km left for them to ride.
The last time up the hill and Gatto immediately pushes the pace. But behind him the big guns come up. Valverde attacks, quickly followed by Cunego.
And that's the leader jersey of Bertagnolli looking well positioned. Speaking about the GC, Ascani doesn't like this short steep climbing work and is a bit too far back. He will lose time today unfortunately.
But up front the stage is still up for grabs. Valverde is able to maintain a gap to the others, while Cunego falls back into the group again. Gatto has cracked Freire on the steep part and has 2 bike lengths on the Spaniard.
With only 3 km left to go and only the 4% climb up to the finish left it all looks very tight. Gatto maintains a good pace and Valverde looks to run out of steam.
1 km to go and the road picks up again. But Valverde is spent and Gatto can raise up his arms and celebrate. We have won a WT stage!
Ascani loses about 1 minute on the GC men today, but nothing can remove the smile from our faces.

He's got 24 seconds on 11th place Pietropolli and only the 9km TT left. Should be able to hold the top 10 place

Stage 7
It has been a fantastic Tirreno for us, now just 9 km stand between Ascani and a top 10 placing. But it looks safe, as 11th Pietropolli is a considerably worse TTer and 12th placed Gesink is almost 1 minute back.

Right after the Tirreno it's time for another big race on Italian soil. The longest classic on the calendar that will always be a battle between sprinters and puncheurs. We are hugely excited to be here. And even though Pozzato saves his best form until RvV and PR he will also try to make a good showing here.

This race has attracted all the big names, from sprinters like Cavendish, Greipel, Goss and Freire to punchy types like Gilbert, Cunego, Valverde and Vinokourov. These last 4 have all made good showing at Paris - Nice or the Tirreno. Vinokourov even won Paris - Nice. About the sprinters we can't really tell yet as there was only 1 real sprint in the Tirreno where they all attended. Freire showed real good form though, making a big last minute jump in Terni and being in the break on the tough day in Offida.
The route and profile are of course well known, 299 km and 7 climbs with famous names will see 171 riders battle it out for the Primavera.

Gatto, Guardini and Pozzato give you options aplenty.
Only three from Androni? |

Yes, weird indeed, no Garzelli no Di Luca either.
Gatto could maybe be there in the final and Pozzato should be, but Im concerned with Guardini's stamina. His form is great though, 97 or so. So maybe I can play on 2 cards.

And then the day is here. A top 10 is required by our sponsor Selle Italia and Pozzato will be our main man for that.
There is a huge fight to get into the break of the day, even riders with a big name want to be part of the marathon move. Gerrans and Scarponi try multiple times, Hulsmans does the same for us. After numerous attempts Scarponi finally gets a good group going and 14 riders are up the road for a big part of the coming afternoon. Neither Hulsmans nor Gerrans have managed to be in there.
Sky were the main chasing team early on in the race, but satisfied with this group they drop the tempo completely. Too avoid too big a gap, and as a bit of penance, Hulsmans keeps the gap at about 4'30". He is also the first in the pack over the Passo del Turchino.
The gap slowly increases, as the 14 escapees work together excellently. Scarponi even has a teammate in the group, so maybe he can keep a bit back for later on. The break now reaches La Manie and the race will get harder from here on out.
Hulsmans and de Patre who came to help can´t keep up the pace on La Manie and the break increases their advantage to 6´. But back on the coast attacks start. While some try to bridge on their own Sky moves back up front to keep these moves controlled. Paolini and Millar are the first to try, but several others do so as well, like Nocentini.
Even Ballan starts attacking now and the Capi aren´t even near yet. The only result though is that the gap to the big break comes down rapidly. At the foot of the first Capo they only have 1 minute left and Scarponi feels that his time has come.
He ditches the others, the only one to halfway follow is Tosh vd Sande, but he remains 30 seconds back. The rest are all caught by the hunting pack. Scarponi keeps going strong for 2 little hills, but then a big move is made in the peloton. Boonen, Ballan, Paolini and Vansummeren get a gap on Sky and will try to link up with Scarponi. vd Sande is caught.
And there´s a new leadgroup, with 5 riders. But at the top of Capo Berta their advantage is down to 30 seconds and Cancellara has taken over the chasing.
This proves too much for the escapees and a small peloton moves onto the Cipressa. Immediately the attacks start again, and this time it´s Cancellara himself who starts them!
Cancellara, Boonen, Ballan, Vansummeren and Paolini try to get away, but Cancellara doesn´t really want any luggage and powers up the slope. The other 4 have to let him go for some lengths, but will that be enough?
But from the front of the chasing riders it's Vinokourov who powers up to the break and gets onto Cancellaras wheel. Only Boonen is able to follow this move, so we get a leading trio with 50" advantage over a 13 chasers.
But Pozzato is in a group another 30" back. Things look bad right now as he has no teammates left either. Positioned badly at the start of the Cipressa he got blocked and lost contact because of Vinos acceleration.
But Gilbert comes to the rescue as he singlehandedly catches the chasing group. Coming up to the Poggio there's a 37 rider peloton 45" behind Cancellara, Vinokourov and Boonen. And Gilbert continues his high pace on the Poggio.
Gilbert bridges solo, Pozzato can only hang on in the group. The 4 men up front have 22" on 16 chasers going into San Remo.
Leukemans is chasing for all he's worth, but the 4 keep up the pace and won't be caught. Visconti, Goss, Hushovd and Breschel will sprint against Pozzato for 5th place. Pozzato quickly latches onto Goss' wheel.
Up front Boonen has started his sprint early and gets easily countered by Cancellara. The Swiss is leading out Gilbert however, and from 4th position Vino launches a huge acceleration.
But Gilbert has timed it perfectly and moves past Cancellara and Vino with about 200 m to go.
The Belgian can celebrate his (first?) classic victory.
Back in the pack Goss' wheel was the right one as he rockets away from the others. But all Pozzato can do is hold on for dear life. So it's 6th in the end for us.

@baggieboys and sutty; Thanks, was the best I could do. When Cancellara attacked I knew it was the right move, but Pozzato had nothing extra today. His form will improve though.
@baia Great that you like the screens, takes a bit of work but I guess it's worth it then.
In other news. The day after the good showing in MSR we got a wildcard for the Ronde van Vlaanderen. This is Pozzatos targeted race, so we are all happy we managed to get an invite. This will motivate the squad even more to keep up the performances.
