That was unexpected. Vermote did amazing job in keeping the peleton together and as we come to the sprints point nobody wants to contest it, so Ciolek rides upfront and takes precious bonus time. Good start for us.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0059.jpg

Now back to our main plan, its 4km to go and Pauwels takes up front and is preparing too attack before the King of Mountains point.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0061.jpg

And he achieves his goal, nobody was close to him. 3 riders are following him, so we might as well try and not fall back to the peleton and try to ride with them.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0062-1.jpg

Pauwles is joined with Manuel Belletti ( AG2R La Mondiale ), Damien Gaudin (Team Europcar ) and Antonino Parrinello ( Androni ). They will create the break of the day. With 50km to go, they have 5min 23 seconds of the advantage.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0064.jpg

Pauwels paid for his early effort and couldn’t join the attack by Belletti and Gaudin. Those two will fight it out for a win, with 5km to go they have 3 minutes of advantage.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0065-1.jpg

It’s Belletti who has the perfect position to win, and being far superior sprinter he should have no problems in wining. Both riders are almost six minutes back in the Overall Classification, so that’s the reason the peleton didn’t chase so hard.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0068.jpg

Belletti takes the win easily, what a day for him and AG2R !

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0069.jpg

Pauwels beats Parrinello in the sprint and takes the final spot on the podium. It’s great result for him today, increasing his lead in KoM Classification and finishing on podium in WT race.

The peleton comes 30 seconds later lead by Lampre. Petacchi wins the sprint, but it doesn’t matter as no bonus seconds were available. Ciolek didn’t sprint at front to avoid any crash and preserve energy for tomorrow.

Team’s Reaction

roadcyclinguk.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/car.jpg

I think nobody expected that result here. For us it’s been quite successful. First out of nowhere we won the sprint point, giving us a bonus in both Time and points in Sprint Competition. And then Pauwels took the KoM points with ease.

With Pauwels in the break we didn’t want to chase, but with the amount of work Pauwels put early he was out of energy later and couldn’t follow the two escapees, and it was too late to chase. Still somehow we got 3rd place and that’s a great result considering how much we achieved on this stage.

After tough seasons at Sky, Pauwels is showing sings he's coming back !

Ciolek took it easy at the end, with tomorrow’s key stage in mind for our team. Great team performance is shown in the Teams Classification, where we occupy 2nd position.

Great result, hope Ciolek can hold his great position on the next stage. Also an impressive Pauwels.

@Beleg32 - Thanks, much appreciated Smile

purepasd - Thank you very much. Glad you like it Smile

PCM rulezz - Hope so too, and indeed Pauwels was great. He's got a nice potential too, so with few months he might improve so he can really contend in stage races.

Stage 5. The Queen stage of this year's Tour Down Under. The toughest stage in the history of the race. The battle for the GC will play out here and will most likely decide the winner. This stage can end in both ways. Either there will be mass sprint with no gaps, or elite puncheurs attacking and leaving the sprinters behind. If the race will be raced at low tempo early on expect a mass sprint.

Team Objective

The plan is to finish with the elite at the end. Looking at Ciolek's form, 60 points I don't think it's good enough to get into podium or Top 10, as there are clearly riders with better form. We'll try, but the main goal is to finish with the peleton or the elite attackers.

Let's see what Ciolek is able to do at the old willunga hill Smile I guess you have to be in van Avermaet's wheel Wink

I really like these small previews. Especially the team goal part, a bit like Squire's tactics meeting. It's nice to see whether you are able to achieve the goals you set yourself or not Smile

Great 2nd with Ciolek and also Pauwels is doing good.
Looking forward for the Willunga Stage.

@ Thanks all ! Hope you will enjoy the stage Wink

i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/jolly_anutnes/daily/AUS.png Tour Down Under - Stage 5
McLaren Vale – Old Willunga Hill

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0028-1.jpg

The first break is the break of the day. Van Keirsbulck got into the break, but the break consists of one rider especially who is very dangerous. Alejandro Valverde is present, along Karsten Kroon ( Saxobank ) and Dimitriy Muravyev ( Astana ). All riders are more than 5 minutes in the GC, except Guillame who is within 20seconds of the leader.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0025-1.jpg

On the first ascent on Willunga Van Summeren is giving it a go. The break has 2’32” minutes of advantage, but it’s reduced to 3 riders with Guillame not being able to follow the high pace.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0026-1.jpg

10km to go and it’s BMC, Sky and GreenEdge working furiously at the front of the peleton. The break has just 52’ seconds over peleton. It will be a close call.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0030-1.jpg

6km to go and Kroon is leading the duo behind him. Valverde is ready to strike soon, as thepeleton is almost behind them. The gap is now 28’ meager seconds.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0031.jpg

2.5km to go and it’s going to finish in the mass sprint! The peleton can already see the trio and will likely to catch them. Ciolek isn’t in good position and is trying to follow Roche’s wheel. Greg Van Avermaet is far behind, will he again produce massive acceleration, like last time ?

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0032-1.jpg

1km to go and it’s still Valverde leading. Kroon and Muravyev are overtaken by very fast peleton now. Ciolek is struggling, his neutral daily form doesn’t help, we are now hoping that there won’t be any time gaps.

i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m537/Alakagom/PCM0033-1.jpg

Out of nowhere. Greg Van Avermaet wins again ! What a amazing acceleration once again. Astarloza and Uran round off the podium. Valverde’s valiant efforts today are rewarded with 5th palce. Ciolek finishes on respectable 22nd position.

Team’s Reaction

roadcyclinguk.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/car.jpg

The stage wasn't for us. Ciolek form wasn't best, so we didn't expect brilliant result here. But still with the result being so-so, we moved up to he 3rd in GC and that's more than I hoped for at the start of TdU. With bit of luck we can even win the overall with good daily form tomorrow.

Also again great team performance is capped as we lead Team Competition, as well as Pauwels securing his jersey today. Ciolek is also in good position to win Points Jersey too. Overall good stage for us and we achieved our team goal for today.

very good result. A podium finish in the GC is absolutly possible now Grin

Ciolek stayed with the best, and is still on the podium. Hope he can hold on to that. Wink

By the way, how come your finish is TDU style? Mine are always normal. Has that got something to do with graphic settings?

He's using NextGen sponsorkits, which you can download here.

Oh, and Ciolek is doing great! Overall podium looks within reach.

Ciolek on podium course. Great. Although it`s unlucky that these short hills are not like in real in PCM.

@fcancellara: Install Jacky Durands Sponsor Kit from the DL section. Several races are included there.

sutty68
Ciolek now in the podium placesWink

Are you going for the intermediate sprints to try and get the Leaders jerseyFrown

jona777
The podium in the next stage would secure your points and podium in GC so hopefully you can accomplish that, although it will be though with all those other big sprinters around! And well, van Avermaet came dropping out of the sky again, nowhere to be seen in the photo before the last one! Shock

I guess indermediate sprints wouldn't be a bad idea indeed...

@PCM rulezz - Indeed and thanks Smile

@FreitasPCM - We hope so too Wink

fcancellara - You question has been answered Wink Really great pack.

@Pellizotti2 - Thank you Pelli Smile

@roturn - Thank you, yea bit of a shame, but well hopefully someday Cyanide might fix that somehow.

sutty68 - Thank you. And yes we will definitely try to get some bonus seconds on the intermediate sprints Wink We'll see how it goes.

@jona777 - It will be tough, but Ciolek with good daily form might do it. And yes indeed twice in a row Greg came out of nowhere and won. Amazing. We went for the intermediate sprints indeed, later today you'll see how we did Wink

I played the stage and will post it later today or tomorrow. I am not going to spoil it, but there was a lot of drama, especially in those cirteriums in PCM there's a lot of drama Wink

Also we got an invite to Giro della Calabria where Sylvain Chavanel will lead us. After TdU there will be Weekly News, bringing you back result from San Luis and more Wink
