Oh, and do you aim for promotion? Your team would be a good base, I think.
Well yes and no. Ofcourse we want promotion this year, but next year might be more likely. In the meantime the team is really looking forward to race in the Tour de France, which will be our first ever grand tour.
2 stages short than last years race, which was won by Thomas Lofvkist, is our first race in March. But surprising Lofkvist is not here to defend his title, and instead gives the leaderhip role to Swed teammate Larsson this year. Today should give the sprinters what they want, tomorrow is for the climbers, and stage 3 is ITT. Which is just what World Champion Larsson wants to see!
Breakaways fight to get away.
Eventually rookie Jimmy Licina is joined by three other men in today's BOTD.
They are joined by two more, to make a total of 6.
The peloton is happy with that.
There gap is 7 minutes by the second KoM.
And stays steady there as we reach the only sprint point on today's course.
With the breakaway thinking they could steal the show they pick up the pace. Licina can't keep up.
Now with 20kms to Thomas Peterson attacks
out of the peloton on a small incline.
But the peloton does their job today
and brings everyone back with 10kms to go.
So to a bunch sprint we go,
Leigh Howard is having troubles making his way to the front.
1-2 for Colnago - CSF Inox. Sacha Modolo gets the
honor of wearing the leader's jersey tomorrow.

Interview - Leigh Howard
Q: Block-in or no energy?
A: A combination of both. It's still early in the season so hopefully me and the other EA-Sony sprinters will get this fixed soon.

With a 12km ITT on stage 3, the objective today is just keep
Gustav Larsson in the front group and not lose time for tomorrow.
Favourites for today include Rui Costa, Domenico Pozzovivo, Mikel Nieve, Oleg Chuzhda, Hugo Sabido, and Daryl Impey.
A really large breakaway is allowed to get away today,
no EA-Sony riders though.
And it doesn't take long for a major event, Daryl Impey goes down hard. He looks really bad but gets back on after he gets a new bike.
The gap is just under 3 minutes with 45kms to go.
The tempo causes a huge split, Impey is caught out. But that was to be expected, he is really struggling.
As we start the climb the gap has only been cut by an additional minute.
Nieve takes the honor of making the first attack.
Domenico Pozzovivo counters a few meters later.
With both favourites up the road, Larsson now has to fend for himself.
And try not to lose to much time.
Now odds on favourite Rui Costa goes.
Larsson is struggling just to stay in front of the peloton.
For a brief moment everyone comes back together, but Nieve kicks again.
Mikel Nieve leads over top, now its just a quick downhill to the finish.
But it's Domenico Pozzovivo who closes the gap.
Rui Costa is leading group 2 just 30 seconds behind.
Larsson is in group 3 another 30 seconds to Costa and group 2.
Nieve holds off Pozzovivo and a charging Costa to take the win. Group 2 gets the same time as Nieve, but Larsson and group 3 come in +47".
Which puts Gustav Erik Larsson 1'07" off the lead.

Interview - Gustav Erik Larsson
Q: I'm sure you have started to crunch the numbers, can you make up a 1'07''?
A: I'm going to try! I'm the "World Champ" on a flat course, 12kms might not be long enough but I think it will be close.
The fans get a treat today with World Champ Larsson in the field,
his biggest competitor is likely to be Iván Gutiérrez who has already beat Contador in the ITT in the Tour of Oman.
Steven Cozza is the first EA-Sony Ericsson rider out of the starthouse
and sets the first mark to beat at 16'52''.
Then comes converted climber Talansky with a time of 16'48''.
Which places him 2nd behind Jesús Del Nero.
Iván Gutiérrez isn't messing around. He stops the clock at 16'13''.
Now that is going to be tough to beat.
Back at the starthouse the croud starts to roar,
Larsson has taken to the course.
He looks great in his Champ Jersey,
the first of many times we will see it this year.
But what doesn't look great is the time, 16'14''. A second slower than Gutiérrez ... form just isn't there yet for Larsson, and is heavily shown in the Movistar man. However, Larsson's time does put him in the virtual lead to win the tour with 20 riders to go.
20 through 16 in GC go through and can't beat out Larsson for the top spot.
Then the next 5, still nobody can touch Larsson.
Until 10th in GC Hugo Sabido makes the break through.
And takes the overall lead by 31 seconds.
Then the next two riders through do the same as well.
Larsson is bumped to 4th. Sabido still holds the lead.
3 of the next 4 do the same, Larsson is at least can still take a top 10. Sabido still holds the lead though.
Until Oleg Chuzhda pushes him over into 2nd by 14 seconds.
With just 2 men left on course.
Domenico Pozzovivo isn't even close and will finish 7th overall,
36 seconds behind Chuzhda.
Mikel Nieve is hoping yellow gives him wings, but only finds out Chuzhda had the Red Bull. He is 33 seconds to slow and takes 5th overall.
Oleg Chuzhda wins the Vuelta a la Region de Murcia with a great timetrial. Gutiérrez wins the stage, followed by Larsson who settles for 10th overall.
The route just wasn't long enough.

Interview - Gustav Erik Larsson
Q: The "World Champion" gets beat, any thoughts?
A: To much food in the offseason, this defeat is really humbling for me. I'm only going to come back stronger for the final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico to show the Pro Tour boys I'm still the best, you'll see! See'ya there.
Seven stages will give an opportunity for every type of rider, from chronomen to sprinters, climbers to"finisseur". There will be a 16.8 km team time trial along the coastline in Marina di Carrara, two fast stages (Carrara - Indicatore-Arezzo and Terranuova Bracciolini - Perugia). As per tradition of this race, there will a lot of chances for consistent climbers with two very long stages of 240 km each, from Narni to Chieti and from Chieti to Castelraimondo which includes climbing the Sassotetto, "Cima Coppi" of this Tirreno-Adriatico.
A very challenging arrival will follow in the sixth stage, from Ussita to Macerata, where racers will climb the Madonna del Monte three times with the finish climb (18% maximum) set on the edge of the historical town center.
In the end, a short single time trial (9.3 km) will take place on the coast road in San Benedetto del Tronto.
Alexandre Vinokourov, Thomas Lofkvist, Vasil Kiryienka
Team Expectations
With our request denied for the Criterium Internation, which was a goal race, Sony Ericsson has changed their goal for this race instead. A top 3 was the orginal goal, but with a much strong startlist in a ProTour race Sony Ericsson has dropped its expectations to a top 10. Which will be a challenge but Thomas Lofkvist isn't going to back down with the support of Larsson, and a great group of climbers.

A team trial gets us going in Italy. With form being the key factor for today's stage its really a toss-up to predict a winner. Many are hinting at Movistar with their dominate timetrialer Iván Gutiérrez, while others are saying Team Sky and RadioShack. And a few are willing to argue EA-Sony Ericsson with World Champion Larsson. Your guess is as good as mine.
Garmin-Cervelo and Rabobank are first to the course.
Then AG2R and Lampre.
EA-Sony is fifth out, and it's not a good day for Larsson and crew.

We are going to start the tour with a major hole to climb out of.
The next 4 teams go through, and surprisingly neither RadioShack or
HTC-Columbia can beat Rabobank's time.
But Team Sky will,
lead by EBH and Stephen Cummings they stop the clock at 20'47''.
Sky stays good through the next 4 teams including
Saxo Bank and Quick-Step Cycling Team.
Katusha has a nice ride and moves into 2nd behind Sky by 9 seconds.
Astana and Euskaltel - Euskadi can't beat Sky either. Only a few teams left.
Androni Giocattoli and Skil - Shimano pose no threat.
But the team to follow them does in Movistar.

And Iván Gutiérrez does it again! David Arroyo however leads them to the line and only has to wait for Leopard-Trek to see if he gets the leaders jersey.
Cancellara brings his team under the line at 20'52".
Which is good for 3rd place, 9 seconds behind Movistar.

Interview - Gustav Erik Larsson
Q: Not the result we had in mind for this group today, what happened?
A: Fatigue, around 5kms left my team couldn't keep up with me. So one-by-one they started falling off the back, and by the time we reached the finish we only had 4 guys. So we lost a few seconds waiting for Linica to cross the line the stop the clock. But we'll get them back.
Manager - Mresuperstar
Edited by Mresuperstar on 26-01-2012 17:07
All though the profile looks flat, it's classified as hilly. Meaning we could see a puncheur get away or a bunch sprint between the strong men.
Option 3 would be a breakaway,
but early on Cancellara isn't letting anyone go.
Until this 6 man break gets away, including EA-Sony rookie Licina and
superstar sprinter Tom Boonen.
Xavier Florencio and Nick Nuyens try to get across the gap.
Now Daniel Martin and Björn Leukemans try the same.
But only Nuyens is able to bridge the gap,
the other 3 men are brought back.
Roy Curvers takes the first KoM points,
hoping for polka-dots after the stage.
Nuyens takes climb 2, but its Sébastien Rosseler thats tallies a total of 6 points to take the jersey tomorrow.
Back in peloton Cancellara attacks, in the breakaway Licina is dropped.
Vino and Luca Paolini attacks as well.
Now Filippo Pozzato.
But it's Kessiakoff that brings back all the recent attackers. The BOTD is still 3 minutes up the road.
Cancellara goes again.
Now Thomas Lofkvist attacks.
But this time Katusha brings everyone back ... except the orginal breakaway.
5 kms to go, the BOTD is down to a gap of 2 minutes.
With the pace extremely high Andy Schleck tries to jump the gap.
But it's to late. Nick Nuyens with the fresher legs out sprints
Tom Boonen for the win.
Francisco José Ventoso saves the peloton by sprinting in between the gap allowing the peloton to only lose 42 seconds. Meaning, we get a new leader, Tom Boonen. Nuyens moves into 2nd and Sébastien Rosseler 3rd.

Interview - Jimmy Licina
Q: The breakaway takes the win, how does it feel knowing you rode with those guys all day and just couldn't keep up in the last 30kms.
A: Disappointed in myself really. But then again here I'm in my 12th professional race day riding with some great ProTour riders. This was a great learning experience for me as I grow into the superstar I know I can be.
Almost the exact opposite as stage 2, today is classified as flat but a crucial climb 20kms away from the finish might throw the sprinters off. Meaning today could possible turn into another breakaway day.
After numerous attempts at a morning breakaway fail,
we get this 9 man group including Daniel Martin.
These men work well together and are able to hold a slim
3 minute gap as we start the climb.
With a breakaway group mainly made up of sprinters, Martin knows that if he wants to win today it has to been done up this climb.
His attack causes confusion within the breakaway, and when no one decides to chase they all start to attack each other. Surely the peloton is loving this as they are slowly pulling them back.
But it's Martin that leads them over top and takes 5 KoM points,
putting him a point off the lead in that competition.
Daniel is giving his all now, the peloton has seemingly decided to stop chasing.
But the finish just couldn't come soon enough,
he gets past under the 10km banner.
5kms to go and its clear that 1 of these 4 breakaway men will win today. Alberto Ongarato, Davide Appollonio, Tomas Vaitkus,
and Simon Geschke who decides to attack and get away.
Back in the peloton Lofkvist decides to challenge the sprinters into chasing. However, the sprint trains accept the challenge
and bring him back 1500 meters later.
Davide Appollonio catches Geschke during the sprint
to take a great win for Team Sky.
And as a nice gift for his hard work, Martin survives to take
5th right ahead of the peloton.

Interview - Daniel Martin
Q: Licina yesturday, you today. Breakaway are turning into a theme here in Italy. Your thoughts?
A: I actually didn't plan on joining the break today but after 5-6 attempts couldn't get away, I knew with 140kms to go at that point I would have a chance to win if they let us go, and they did. I just attacked to early on the climb and didn't have enough energy left to make it to the finish.
A true hilly stage should finally sort out the pretenders from the contendors.
Or a breakaway could spoil everything for the third straight day.
They get a max of 11 minutes, and Jürgen Roelandts just looks like a jerk being the only man interested in the sprint point with a gap that large.
As we start the final KoM climb, their gap is just 3 minutes. But it's clear the peloton suffered to get it there. Lofkvist and Larsson are the last EA-Sony men in the front 30 riders chasing now.
Alessandro Bertolini is the last man standing with 20kms to go. Lars Ytting Bak will also make a name for himself after
winning both climbs today to grab the KoM jersey.
Mikel Nieve isn't going to wait for the catch, Filippo Pozzato counters.
But it's Saxo Bank with Cancellara that brings everyone back.
But shortly after Pozzato kicks again.
All the favourites counter including Lofkvist.
But again with 5kms to go everyone is back in one group.
Lofkvist leads the charge to the line.
Out of nowhere Nieve finds the energy for another strong attack.
And now Cunego shows his face for the first time.
What a duel between Nieve and Cunego heading to the line, Pozzato is struggling to keep their speed. While Lofkvist and Andy Schleck
are left battling for 4th.
A photo finish on the line!
Damiano Cunego looks back to see his name on the top line,
and gives Nieve a "What's Up."
14 seconds later Pozzato comes in 3rd.
Followed by Schleck in 4th, and Lofkvist in 5th. Cunego takes the overall lead by a slim margin, while Lofkvist moves up the leaderboard into 7th overall.

Interview - Thomas Löfkvist
Q: Is 5th a result your happy with?
A: Very much, it's right where I should be. I knowing winning is what everyone wants but with this field I'm satisfied with a top 5. And more importantly 7th in GC.
Great reports from Tirreno, truly enjoying it ! Shame that Martin could't win on stage 3, but Löfkvist was great today. 5th is a nice result, and 5th in GC is achievable too. Good luck
