The fact is that Evans doesn't have the climbing ability to have even the slightest of slightest chances to beat both Schleck and Contador in a straight fight. He'll only win the Tour if something very unusual happens.
Considering that, there's no point in conserving his team for later, as he won't be leading later. He has a chance to have the jersey NOW so he should grab it.
