Sorry but, your song was rubbish. Thats why youre not through.
Shouldn't we got throught just because of that? Or did we need some travestites on unicycles while spitting fire?
You needed a good song. Simple.
Crap songs always struggle - and yes, more so if it is a crap song from a Western European country. But enter a good song and you get through - Belgium proved it last year.

But obviously, "good" is subjective.
The Danish entrant was very surprised that Netherlands was eliminated. |

I suppose that is the hard part.
People involved with the British entry always seem convinced that it is a good song with a really good chance, and so blame political voting or wherever when it does badly - not admitting that perhaps the song wasnt very good

i think it's pretty obvious that no one in Britain cares about the eurovision song contest. if we did then with the talent we have in our country we could have put in a half decent song each year. as it is we just send has beens and people no-one has ever heard of. successful artists see it as embarassing and wouldn't be seen anywhere near the competition. Is it still the case where only artists with no record deal can enter?
most people in Britain watch it to laugh at the rubbish songs and costumes. i think if Jedward win it will loose what little credibility it has in Britain. |

In all fairness, I don't know anybody who's not on the interwebz who likes Eurovision/cares enough to watch it.
Who won anyway?

Why is it then that most of the people I know watch Eurovision?
Yes, it's a laugh, but the reason there aren't "big acts" representing Britain is that artists are too scared of coming out of the experience badly and getting humiliated. It's also maybe due to a snobbish attitude towards Eurovision in the UK, but the fact is that we have a terrible record in Eurovision in recent times, with which that snobbish attitude should't fit at all.
But anyway, Blue's pretty big, apparently. |

the voice of reason
i not having a dig at anyone who does like it.
just saying that the vast majority of people in britain counldn't care less. most people watch it for amusement rather then the music. even terry wogan who commentated on it for 30 years thought it was a joke.
i think that as a country britain has more in common with america then europe in terms of music. indie, rock, hip-hop and R n B are the most popular styles of music.

In 2009, 7.8 million (average) watched BBC during the Eurovision broadcast. It's not the majority, but 35 % of the viewers isn't exactly bad. Especially not when you consider the fact that Britain's Got Talent was broadcasted at the same time. |

Yes, and using LOGIC (tm), 99% of those watch it to mock it!

yes, but it's a one off event screened at prime time on a saturday night on the BBC.
most one off programmes screened in the same time would have similar if not better figures.
as said, i'm not having a go or anything. i'm simply saying that most people in britain see it as cheesy entertainment rather then a credible music contest.
factors such as no credible british acts entering and the obvious tactical voting mean that it will never be taken seriously in Britain. esp when you look at the fact that no-one whos won, except abba, has ever gone on to any success in Britain which adds to the feeling that it is a competition for has beens and no hopers.

Well 99% of people in Britain anyway, if the rest of europe thinks Jedward are a credible music act then i don't really think i have to say anymore.
your humour radar is obviously not working today. |

So much bad statistics in use, it's painful. Care to prove any of your claims Ringo? Viewing figures for other BBC shows on Saturday evening's perhaps? Dr Who is probably BBC's best primetime Saturday night TV show, and last week that got 6 million. Less than Eurovision last year then. Even on Christmas Day, probably the biggest TV watching Day of the year, the BBC's most viewed shows got little more than 10 million.
Your 99% statement is your opinion, not a statistic. Its also wrong, I might add. How do you explain the fact that the 2009 winning song got to #10 in the Uk Charts (and #3 in the Download charts)?
And no credible British acts entering? Blue have had three Number 1 albums and three Number 1 singles in Britain - nevermind success had elsewhere in Europe, most notably in Italy. Whether you like them or not, you cant complain that Britain are sending 'nobodies' this year.
And will it lose credibility in Britain if Jedward win? As much as I hate Jedward, they still got to #2 in the British charts with an earlier song, and they are probably going to get quite a few points later today from British voters.

The opening act of Eurovision has been leaked on youtube.
Spoiler tag below gives a very vague synopsis
Spoiler
Lena is performing in the contest, so she can't sing can she? So, our hosts Stefan, Anke and Judith attempt it before Stefan goes solo with a big band
Oh, and this year I actually think the UK has a larger chance than usual. Not my sort of song, but it is many others.
Other than that, I think Finland will win tonight. With Denmark and Sweden quite high. Yep, it's a nordic fest tonight I think.

nope, i don't care about it enough to get involved in a debate.
i've voiced my opinion, which i can garantee is shared by the majority of people in the UK, they were even just taking the piss out of it on football focus.
now i'll leave you to enjoy the competition and the rest of the giro |

I doubt many football fans are the eurovision type anyway. So that's a bad argument. Or else we might just say "oh football focus said this, we must believe it then".
I love Eurovision as a serious competition that is a bit of fun too.

i don't care about it enough to get involved in a debate.
You say that, yet this is the 2nd year in a row youve made your way into the Eurovision threads and caused a debate. So sure, keep telling yourself you dont care
now i'll leave you to enjoy the competition
I like how you say this. Then immediately post again 2 posts later. Try keeping to your word and not posting on this thread again.
--
It can be popular to mock Eurovision in Britain, but the viewing figures dont lie. Many people do watch it with interest, or watch with interest as well as laughing at elements. Most of the people who look down upon Eurovision wont actually watch the whole thing.
--
And here is my Top 12 Eurovision prediction. Note: Not a list of my favourites! I refuse to acknowledge Ireland, and I havent even heard Lena's song yet, but it's almost guaranteed to collect some good points - the host country so often does.
Sweden
Hungary
Estonia
Russia
Germany
Finland
Serbia
UK
France
Azerbaijan
Denmark
Greece
@fjhoekie France will be boosted by the jury vote, I bet.
