The 2012 Giro will feature not just the Alpe d'Huez, but also the Refugio Calvanico.
13kms at 13% average. The last 5kms are all at 15% or higher.

Evans won`t ride the Ardennes classics after a crash in the training two weeks ago.
It`s obviously harder than expected and so it doesn`t make much sense to force it.
More probably he will be back in the peloton in the Tour de Romandie. |

Anyone in the UK, get the 2011 official Giro programme.
The interview with Zomegan is quite interesting actually. Best quote is probably "The giro is for hard men, not for little girls".
But he also talks about the Giro's status in relation to the Tour etc. Quite interesting.

I am already worried when I look how Giro routes going to look harder and harder every year. This is already to much pain inside 3 weeks.

Obviously, the big question here is: Why?
My first thought is that he has signed a pre-contract with GreenEdge - a team that will compete for a ProTeam spot next season along with OmegaPharma. With the ranking points being very valueable in terms of getting that PT spot, there's simply no reason for Omega to keep him around - they are going to lose the precious points anyway. |

"If the nordic Kingdom is flat, the Giro organisers appear to be compensating elsewhere with the inclusion of the “Zoncolan of the south”, a road near Salerno in Italy’s Campania region – famous for its buffalo mozzarella – that climbs up to the Rifugio Calvanico 1320m.
This is not sky-high but the climb gains 1000m in under 8km, meaning an average gradient in excess of 13% and as the profile shows, sections are far steeper with short moments at 23%"

Rifugio Calvanico:
I don't know if there's another road up it, as it appears shorter than isso said. But meh, the last kms are just a false flat.
Edit: I'm so sloooooooow.

Could that be related to this?

Yes, can't find it either, stops at Calvanico, but it should be around there since it's called Rifugio Calvanico. |
