Boom should be good for a top 5 at Algarve regardless of the line-up there. Good luck!

I hope so.
I am just a bit afraid of too strong puncheurs, who will gain more time on the hilly stage than losing in the timetrial. It`s just 16km, so small gaps.
But top 5 must be the goal here.
Once again 4 young talents, but 2 strong helpers for Boom, so should be possible to get 1-3 point collectors here. Line Up will follow as soon as the start list is announced. |

Volta ao Algarve - Line-Up & goals
Time for Lars Boom to show his great skills in his season opener. And he will need all his skills as the CT elite is here in Ignatiev, LL Sanchez, Reus, Koren and many others.
Leader
Lars Boom |
Co-Leader
Ben Hermans |
Luxury team mate
Andrei Kunitski |
Talents
Thomas Koep | Alexander Krieger | Johim Ariesen | Mikel Landa |
Pretty obvious that Lars Boom will lead the team. He has very high goals here and for the whole season. With Hermans and Kunitski he has a very strong support here and both of them are also capable for good overall results, although a top10 would be surprising by them.
Koep, Krieger and Ariesen are some of our big talents and will try to learn for the next season. Landa is our young Spanish loanie from Festina and already proved some hill skills, so let`s see what he can do here.
"It`s the season opener for me, but so it is for many others here. I believe in my skills and hope for a brilliant start here. Beating Ignatiev sounds pretty tough but why not trying? I believe I can reach the top 5 here but actually I hope for a podium.", Lars Boom to the Algarve Daily News before the start.

Volta ao Algarve - Young guns keep going
Stage 1 of the Volta ao Algarve just ended. It was a flat stage and as we have absolutely no real sprinter here, Koep got the permission by his team to go into the break of the day. And he wouldn`t disappoint us. Together with UniCredit`s Brändle and Focus` Thill he formed the 3 men group, who had more than 7min at their maximum.
Koep leading the group on the first climb
Brändle proved to be his biggest opponent in the fight for the KoM jersey and so the points were evenly distributed between them. That also means that Brändle was favoured by the jury and will wear the shirt tomorrow.
But nothing too be very sad about as Koep also sprinted on the intermediate sprints for bonus seconds. With a 1st and a 2nd there he grabbed 10 bonus seconds, what brings him on the 3rd in the overall and 1st on the Youth ranking. So we got the 2nd ever shirt wearer in our team this season. And the 2nd time it`s one of our young talents.
When they got caught with 7,5km to go, the top sprinters got in position and Rothaus was just trying to avoid crashes. Our two best sprinters Ariesen and Krieger are still very young and unexperienced. It`s too early to expect big things of them this season.
Therefore Ben Hermans once again surprised with his 8th in this stage as also Lars Boom as 13th. Good sprinting by them, but nowhere close to the winner Trusov. |

Volta ao Algarve - Boom on podium course
After the two hilly stages the overall was mixed pretty much.
Although the 2nd stage didn`t look very hard we have seen huge gaps there and so obviously Koep lost the lead in the Youth ranking as he was gapped, too.
Biggest news of the day was surely the bad crash by top favourite Mikhail Ignatiev. He surely lost the race on this stage as he finished with some minutes back and looked surely injured. A big setback for the ambitious Russian team.
Rothaus leading the favourite`s group on stage 2
As Tinkoff obviously stopped doing the pace then, Rothaus overtook this work. It was maybe not the best decision by us directly after Ignatiev crashed and some experts might say this was unfair, but on the other hand there was still a breakaway ahead and not that far to go. But probably our team should have waited for a few more kilometers to check Ignatiev`s chances.
In the end it was Grau ahead of Rovira, who survived the breakaway attempt without gaining time on the close favourites, where Hermans again finished as 8th with also Boom and Kunitski still in this group, while many pure time trialists had to stop dreaming as they couldn`t follow on the climbs.
The 3rd stage was said to be the deciding one and maybe even more important than the short 16km time trial. And this prediction definitely came true as the race got his first little preliminaries.
Again it was Rothaus, who was one of the active teams in the peloton chasing a pretty dangerous breakaway. And on all the climbs many riders were losing contact. One of them again Ignatiev, who surely is injured. How bad it really is, we might see in the time trial.
On the deciding last 5km the breakaway was caught and the favourites attacked. It was LL Sanchez, who proved to be the strongest and so all other riders like Boom, Reus, Pellizotti, Weening, Larsson, Koren... had to follow to keep their chances. As soon as it became really steep and Sanchez again accelerated it was only Weening and luckily Boom, who were able to follow, while his biggest contenders lost some ground.
Boom holds on to Sanchez and Weening and finishes 2nd
In the sprint Sanchez cleary gapped the two, but more important the gap to the next group, so Boom`s chances to overtake Sanchez are lowered but his chance to keep the 2nd are pretty high now. Also Hermans and Kunitski did again well and have still chances for a top10-15. To avoid pulling some other favourites they stayed in the first group and didn`t attack. Also Landa`s 22nd today was impressive and must be mentioned. |

Volta ao Algarve - Boom crowns great race with ITT win
Stage 4 of the Volta ao Algarve was another sprinter stage. But with some hills on the last kilometers and small gaps in the rankings there were also some unexpected moves. Race leader LL Sanchez attacked and tried to gain more time on Boom before the time trial, where the Dutch is surely favoured. But in the end it was a pure sprinter with Dumoulin, who took the stage.
But even more interesting for us that Boom also fought for every second. In the final our team rode for him to bring him in a good position. He isn`t known as really good sprinter but after 2 hilly stages and some hills on this stage, he just gave it a try. His 6th of the day proved, it was a good try, although he wouldn`t gain time on Sanchez.
Bigger news in the following time trial. Boom needed to gain 27s on Sanchez for the overall win. Quite a tough challenge. But also the competition for the stage win was pretty huge. Big favourite Ignatiev still suffers on his injury, but you`ll never know, how the time trial suits him. Other than that Reus was the next favourite ahead of many riders including Lars Boom.
On the check point Gustav Larsson was a bit surprising the fastest with Boom being counted as same time but just 4s ahead of Sanchez. So 23s more to gain and now the flat part really started.
In the end Boom really blasted off and finished in a great 21'48 and 6s faster than Larsson as 2nd. Also Sanchez did extraordinary well today with some extra motivation in the yellow yersey and was just 16s behind. So he rescued 13s for the overall win. A great day for the Portuguese team Cerne in one of their home races. Sanchez was purely the strongest over the 5 days and fully deserves this win. But also Boom proved his strength in these races and finished with a stage win, 2nd overall, 2nd points classification and other good results. Really a brilliant start for our team leader into the season.
Also the team`s work paid off with Hermans being 14th and Kunitski on a strong 15th as they were in the first bigger group on every hilly stage. This also secured us the 2nd in the team ranking behind the strong UniCredit Team. In general probably the most successful race for us so far and hopefully this gives us a big boost for the next races.

Congratulations on a great race! If Boom continues this way, you will no doubt prove my guess of a 26th place in the overall standings wrong |

Rothaus Blog - Rob Ruijgh Interview
Press Director: Hi Rob. How`s the season going for you so far?
Rob Ruijgh: I am pretty happy so far. Especially the Tour Meditteraneen went really well for me. Unfortunately I missed the top 10 in the final classement but being inside on the hardest stage while supporting Ryder was great.
PD: Often it`s being neglected that you are one of Rothaus` climbing leaders. This will give you lots of free rides over this season. So what are your goals?
Ruijgh: I will ride in Portugal and Austria. I expect a strong start list in both races but they are long and I might get a chance there for a good stage result and maybe even a nice overall. Also the Deutschlandtour is one of my races and it`s very important for us to perform well there.
PD: What about the Corsica International? You will also lead there.
Ruijgh; This will be a tough one. It`s one of the mountaineous HC races, so all big names are there. Plus the hard mountain stage is already on day 1, so it will be hard to get in the group of the day as decent climber, but we definitely have to try something there.
Probably Eric (Baumann) has bigger chances in the sprint to get a top 10 result.
PD: So you don`t really have expectations for this race?
Ruijgh: No. A top20 would be nice but already very hard. It`s more likely more a preparation race for me and a good opportunity to race against the best in our business.
PD: Good luck then for this race and for the rest of the season. |

Corsica International - Ruijgh proving great climbing skills
It was the first and long expected stage of the HC race Corsica International. All big names are here and as one of the weaker climber teams in general, we had no big expectations here.
Rob Ruijgh is our clear leader here and was expected to be on his own pretty early without any climbing domestique. So he was supposed to try to get into the break or a mid-stage attack as he wouldn`t be able to ride with the very best if starting the final climb together with them.
Ruijgh attacking with Brandt and Lewis
And obviously he had nice legs today as he attacked with about 100km to go on the 2nd big 1st cat mountain together with Oz`s Lewis and California`s Brandt. Saab`s Eltink joined this group later and they were allowed to distance the peloton.
Ruijgh taking 4 bonus seconds
After joining the former breakaway of 8 riders our leader was still very ambitious and sprinted on the 2nd at the intermediate to take 4 bonus seconds. We will see later how important these seconds are.
Ruijgh leading solo with 5km to go
And it became better and better. Rob distanced his former companions and tried to avoid the fusion with the big climbers a la Alarcon, Nazaret, Van Den Broeck, Valverde or the others.
Unfortunately Aker`s Alarcon was simply too strong and reached him in the final as also the first chasing group. But Ruijgh was still ahead of the next groups with big names like Rujano or Ratiy when the sprint started and so he took a brilliant 7th on this stage. Much more than we had expected, so we might open some Champagner today to celebrate this big surprise.
"I had very good legs today and so I had to try everything. I was a bit surprised by myself when I saw the 5km mark and still leading the race solo. In the end I missed the big coup, but the 7th is far more than expected. It`s 14s to the next riders now, so I really hope to stay in the top 10 after the time trial", Rob after the race. |

Great effort by Ruijgh, although I'm a bit disappointed that he dropped our best climber Shaun Lewis, who only finished 34th
Anyway: Nice for Rothaus! Congrats.

I was also surprised as it was 3x76 and Ruijgh 75 climbing.
On the other hand Lewis is weak on the flat parts, what might cost him some energy with a 100km attack. Brandt and Eltink just finishd a bit behind Ruijgh in the next group. |

Corsica International - Ruijgh with top 10 finish
The second stage was a short and flat stage for the sprinters. So we had some expectations here with Baumann and Iglinski`s lead-out.
But at first our only French rider Passeron was showing himself in his country and attacked with some others in the early breakaway.
Aurelion Passeron in the break of stage 2
In the end this break had no chance at all and the sprinters were forming the trains. Unfortunately Iglinski was nowhere to see and so Baumann had to find a good position on his own.
But all sprinter ambitions stopped with the late attack by Vansummeren, Schädlich and Laidler, who decided the race in this order. Baumann`s 15th in the sprint was a bit less than expected, after the great first stage we won`t be that unhappy.
In the final time trial on the third day it was a big fight for Rob to save his top 10 result. He had 14s to some bigger favourites and more important better time trialists.
Rob Ruijgh against the clock on Corsica
In the end he lost just one spot to Swede`s Lövkvist and finishes on a brilliant 8th in the overall rankings. Nobody had seen this coming.
And it also shows how important it is to fight for the bonus seconds during the stage. These 4s on the first stage saved him his 8th ahead of Ratiy and Nicácio. Very well done.
Hopefully this result will give our team a boost for the next races and especially showing our climbers that it`s always possible to reach unexpected results.

After the hilly and mountainous races we will participate in the Belgium cobbled races in the next weeks.
Surely our team is not really in a top position for these races but it`s a good opportunity for our youngsters to test themselves.
Starting with Nokere-Koerse our big man Maxime Vantomme will start his season. Without big support and also not a well-suited profile for our sprinter, a top25 and being in the break of the day are our only hopes for this race.
Even worse the situation in the Dwars Door Vlaanderen. Martin Velits, one of our time trialists with good allrounder qualities, which will be shown in the 2nd season half will start his season there without any ambitions. Actually we can be happy to get a top 50 there, so being in the break is far more important there.
In the E3 Prijs the situation is clearly better. Lars Boom as our best cobbler might have outsider chances for a good result here. So a top15 might be possible in this HC race.
Last but surely not least the KBC De Panne Tour. The 4 day race is clearly our most important of these four. With one hard cobbled stage, two "sprinter" stages and a short 9km time trial, Lars Boom will be our man for the overall. If he can stay in one of the front groups on the first stage, then a really good overall result is possible. Also Maxime Vantomme will probably get his first 2 chances for a stage win there.
So interesting weeks can be expected. So far our season wasn`t too bad at all. Some disappointing stages but more important some absolutely brilliant stages, too. Our Co-Sponsor AEGON already called us, that they are pretty pleased with our team`s performance so far. Especially seeing their two country men Boom and Ruijgh doing very well made them extraordinary happy. They can`t wait to see our team in the 2 Dutch classics Hel Van Het Mergeland and Profronde van Drenthe. |

Nokere-Koerse - Vantomme with great season start
As announced earlier this week we had zero ambitions for this race as we and most experts expected a selective race controlled by the big classic teams Bpost and Pokerstars.
In the end it came totally different as the cobbled sections went out to be too easy and bad placed to split the peloton. So it was more likely a flat sprinter classic with the cobblers having some advantage on the cobbled last kilometer.
Our primary goal was to go into the break of the day as you never know how the race ends. Carlo Westphal was our man in the group of 7 riders. The German, who won the very first stage ever for our team, continues to commend himself for a new contract. It`s quite a pity that he won`t have that many race days this season.
Westphal in the break of Nokere-Koerse
Then everything was pretty boring until the last lap. No big attacks, no splittings. So the whole peloton caught the break and except of a nasty crash in the back of the peloton, where also some Rothaus riders obviously were in nothing really happened.
Taillefour and Gaudin were the only attacking riders on this lap. Nothing to see from the big teams.
Vantomme grabbing Hushovd`s wheel in the final kilometers
So the weaker cobblers but better sprinters such as Hushovd or Vantomme saw their chance and prepared for the final sprint, while Gaudin was still in front to take a nice solo win. But the battle for the 2nd was still exciting.
Hushovd decides the sprint from the front ahead of Vantomme
In the end Hushovd proved to be the strongest in the peloton and takes the 2nd ahead of Rothaus` Vantomme, who perfectly starts the season.
Hopefully this is a good sign for a very successful season for our Belgium sprinter. It was surely a first big exclamation mark for all the laughter when we signed him for that much money.
"I had good legs today and had perfect support by my team. Especially young Johim Ariesen showed his future talent today and covered me all day long through many hard situations. I think this is just the start of a great season", said a pretty happy Maxime Vantomme after the race.

E3 Prijs - Boom with biggest career win
Starting the E3 Prijs as outsider Rothaus performed extraordinary well.
Our goal was to be in the break and then a top15 or with good legs a top10. In the end all our expectations were satisfied.
The race started with a 6 rider group including Jakub Novak once again. The young Czech really proves to be our most attacking rider so far this season and should be a great addition for the Milka-Nestle squad next season.
Jakub Novak in the E3 Prijs break of the day
But the more important situation was when Boom and Velits both joined the favourites group of 17 riders after Bpost`s acceleration. Boom was actually expected there but still having a team mate with him was surely an important factor today.
Lars Boom follows Bpost`s and Langeveld`s late attack
Together with Koppert`s Langeveld and 3 Bpost riders Boom started into the final kilometers ahead of all the sprinters.
Boom overtaking Maes winning the E3 Prijs
In the final sprint Boom was acting pretty clever waiting for the Bpost riders to make their move and coming from behind overtaking Maes to win surprisingly today.
This is surely the biggest win so far for the team and far more than expected.
"I had good legs today, so I decided to counter the last attack. And with just 5 riders left I already knew I have satisfied all expectations and had no pressure. But in such a finish everything can happen, so I wanted this win and luckily I won. It`s a great day for me and the team and we will surely celebrate later", Boom after the race.
This shows that Boom took his good form from the Volta ao Algarve into the classic season and makes him to one of the race favourites for the soon starting De Panne Tour, which should suit him even more with a final time trial.
