Nice win with Casper, he has a really good season so far.

Classic Loire Atlantique: Le Haye Fouassiere: 168.6km

After a two-week hiatus from racing, Saur - Sojasun resumes its season back in France, with the hilly one day race the Classic Loire Atlantique. Last year, the team took the win here with Cyril Bessy, who will not be defending. Nonetheless, the team hopes to get a good result after an unexpected layoff.

The team will be led by Cyril Lemoine and Jonathan Hivert. Both riders are strong enough to deal with the hills, but there will be plenty of questions over race fitness. For support, they will have Jean-Marc Marino, Yannick Talabardon, and Julien Simon.

The main contenders include Pierrick Fédrigo (Bbox Bouygues Télécom), José Iván Gutiérrez (Caisse d'Epargne), and Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet).

As the team was unsure of how the leaders would do, they wanted to have a man in the breakaway group. Marino was able to make the move with 12 other riders.

Marino leads the break.

With 85km remaining on the day, the break had a lead of 5'18". However this was almost solely due to Marino, as none of the other riders helped him set the pace. Fed up, Marino attacked the group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/208.jpg
Sick of working for others, Marino moves ahead of the other breakaway riders.

Skil - Shimano and Bbox led the peloton throughout the day and easily caught the 12 other riders with 34km left. Apparently they didn't truly grasp the concept of a breakaway.

Up ahead, Marino was still motoring along.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/209.jpg
Marino rode alone for most of the day.

Marino had a margin of 1'21" over the field when he went under the 20km banner. It was clear he would be caught, but he fought hard, and was not reeled in until 8.4km were left on the day.

With Marino arrested, the peloton relaxed, something Saur hoped to take advantage of. Hivert went on the offensive and attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/210.jpg
Hivert surprises the peloton with a late attack.

Hivert broke clear from the field, but didn't quite have the legs to carry out the attack to completion. He would be chased down by Landbouwkrediet with a little over 3km left. The hilly race would come down to a sprint.

The sprint was disorganized with Bbox, Landbouwkrediet, and CCC Polstat riders all over the place. Lemoine did his best for Saur trying to find the right wheel. Heading around the final bend, Cyril Gautier was just ahead.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/211.jpg
The last kilometer was a mess.

In the confusion, no one was able to over Gautier, as the promising young rider took the closely contested finish. The 3 teams (CCC, Bbox, and Landbouwkrediet) dominating the finish took 7 out of 10 of the top places.

Lemoine finished in 16th for Saur - Sojasun.

Gautier makes good on his expectations.

The Primevera of the Magues is the next race as Saur - Sojasun's season kicks back up. A fairly long race, that, despite its uneven terrain, should come down to a mass sprint from a large group. Jimmy Casper won here in 2002 and will be looking to repeat that accomplishment.

Standing in his way are many of the familiar names from French racing this season, notably Anthony Geslin (FDJ) and Yukiya Arashiro (BBox). Additionally, stage winner from Qatar Enrico Rossi (Ceramica) is a dangerous opponent.

Casper will have his full sprint train with Stéphane Poulhiès, Romain Matheou, Cyril Lemoine (who has been the missing piece for much of the season), and lead out man Jimmy Engoulvent to help try and deliver him to victory.

It was an incredibly windy day and Saur - Sojasun decided to try to use this to their advantage. They sent Yannick Talabardon, Cédric Coutouly, Cyril Bessy, and Poulhiès to the front, in an attempt to split the field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/214.jpg
Saur - Sojasun did a lot of work on the day.

Kilometer after kilometer, the team drove the peloton onwards. The fast pace being set did not allow any riders trying to escape to stay clear for long. With the peloton strung out, Saur - Sojasun would push on.

Finally, with 20km left in the day, the peloton broke apart. 63 riders remained in the main group, however, practically all the pre-race favorites were still there. As other teams began to help with the pace-making, one could not help but to think Saur's efforts were a bit careless and unwarranted.

Heading into the finish, Saur - Sojasun tried to organize their sprint train for Casper, only to find that their lay-off had resulted in some rustiness. Steve Chainel (Bbox) was able to get between Engoulvent and Casper, causing some panic.

Due to some excellent maneuvering by Engoulvent, he was able to regroup with Casper and slowly bring the team leader to front. As the sprint opened up, Casper was in prime position to pounce.

Unfortunately, due to the combination of fast pace, poor tactics, and lack of race form, Casper did not have the legs and usual fast finish. He would fade down the stretch and settle for 8th place.

The winner on the day was the in-form Gautier, who would crush the field to take his second victory in a row.

Gautier is enjoying a fine vein of form.

Bad luck with Casper. Gautier seems to be on fire.

Tuco the Ugly
@ janne_837: Yeah, Gautier was really impressive in those two races.

Critérium International

The last race in March will be a tough one. A three-day race, the Critérium International, features a tough mountain stage, a flat stage, and short time trial. In recent years, the race could be called the Jens Voigt invitational, as the German strongman has won the past 3 editions, and 5 in total. Yet, Voigt and Team Saxo Bank decided not to take part this year, leaving an opportunity for another.

However, this list may contain only 1 rider, Alberto Contador. With Alexandre Vinokourov somewhat surprisingly leading the Astana team in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, the best stage racer in the world is in Corsica with much of his strong Spanish contingent. He is likely not in top form, but did just recently come in 7th in Tirreno-Adriatico.

Battling against Contador will be a group of riders likely preparing for the Giro d'Italia in the forms of Marco Pinotti (HTC), Damiano Cunego (Lampre), and Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis).

Saur - Sojasun bring a strong team to the race, with Jérôme Coppel making his season debut and leading the team. Along with Coppel, the team will feature Sébastien Joly, Jonathan Hivert, and Jimmy Casper. Unfortunately, the fitness level of the riders is not really where there should be given the lack of recent racing.

Additionally, Saur - Sojasun have the sponsors goal of wearing the points jersey.

Stage 1: Porto-Vecchio - Col de l'Ospedale: 176.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/218.jpg

Today's stage would feature the most climbing Saur - Sojasun has seen this season. The peloton would have to tackle 4 major climbs on the day, ending with the long and steady Col de l'Ospendale, a 14.4km climb with an average gradient of 6.0%. Before this last climb, the riders would have to navigate the Viggianello, the Col de Mela, and the Col de Bacinu; certainly no easy task.

Given the composition of the stages, and the sponsors goal, Saur - Sojasun wanted to get a strong rider in the break. Joly was able to get away with 3 other riders. Pierre Cazaux (FDJ), Imanol Erviti (Caisse), and Adam Hansen (HTC).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/219.jpg
Joly leads the break up the Viggianello.

Saur - Sojasun were hoping the peloton would give the break a lot of freedom, but Astana had other plans. While they allowed the break to remain clear, they set a high pace on the day. By the top of the Viggianello, the break's lead was remaining steady at 1'37".

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/220.jpg
Astana set a punishing pace on the day.

As the riders moved along, Astana kept up its pace. Over the Col de Mela and Col de Bacinu riders were constantly being shed from the peloton. On the final descent of the day, the peloton only contained 69 riders.

Meanwhile, the breakaway would have edged out their lead to 2'09" heading into the valley.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/221.jpg
The breakaway summits the Col de Bacinu and begins to head into the valley to Porto-Vecchio.

The break began to crumble in the valley, as they were exhausted from trying to remain clear all day. All of the break riders would be contained several kilometers before the Col de l'Ospendale began.

Spectators did not have to wait long for the action to heat up. Nearly at the base, heavy favorite Alberto Contador attacked with 13.5km left.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/222.jpg
Contador attacks very early.

No other rider would even attempt to follow the blistering acceleration. If Contador had calculated his energy correctly, it seemed very likely he would take the win.

As Astana eased off the front, a collection of riders went to the front to pull. Initially, the group was 38 riders. Joly, Coppel, Hivert, and Talabardon were there for Saur. However, all 4 were towards the back and suffering.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/223.jpg
Could anyone in this group pull back Bertie?

The group was losing ground to Contador. With 8.4km left, Contador was already 2 minutes up on the chase group.

Nonetheless, the riders dug deep and continued to push on. None of the Saur riders had any energy to attack, and it would be a case of trying to hang in there until the end. With 5km left, Joly was dropped.

Several minor attacks, would dislodge most of the chase group, including the remaining Saur riders with 3.3km left.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/224.jpg
Saur - Sojasun loses contact with the chase group.

With Contador cruising to victory, the battle for second ensued in the final kilometers. Rein Taaramäe would be the first to attack.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/225.jpg
Taaramäe initiated the fight for 2nd.

Impressively, having had no teammate support for the entire race, Damiano Cunego follows.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/226.jpg
Cunego counters.

The two riders would almost get away, but a great effort from Andrea Tonti (CarmioOro NGC) and Rui Costa (Caisse) would help form a small group of 7 riders to fight it out for the podium places. This group included Cunego, Taaramäe, Costa, Tonti, Tejay Van Garderen (HTC), Charles Wegelius (Omega), and Damien Monier (Cofidis).

In the sprint finish, Monier would edge out Taaramäe and Cunego for 2nd.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/227.jpg
Monier takes an impressive 2nd in a close finish.

However the day clearly belonged to Contador, who despite facing mostly inferior competition, won in dominating fashion. El Pistelero would continually pull away from the field, crossing the line 3'27" before Monier.

For Saur, Talabardon, Coppel, and Hivert would all finish together 4'38" behind the diminutive Spanish climber.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/228.jpg
Contador had no equal on the day.

Critérium International: Stage 2: Porto-Vecchio - Porto-Vecchio: 72.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/229.jpg

The second stage is shot and flat, and should provide some respite for the peloton after yesterday's tough stage. Given our sponsor goal of wearing the points jersey, Jimmy Casper will be under enormous pressure to get a win here.

Wanting to get the maximum points possible on the day, Saur - Sojasun worked on the front in an effort to stop any breakaways from forming. They wanted to set up Casper for the intermediate sprint at 36km.

The team had to work hard, especially over the Pagliaggiolo climb at 23km, but were successful in containing the attacking riders. Jimmy Engoulvent led Casper perfectly, and the two riders took the points in Porto-Vecchio.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/230.jpg
Casper gets some valuable points.

With the first goal of the day accomplished, Saur would pull off the front and allow Astana to set the speed. A slightly slower pace was established and several riders got away, however all were arrested shortly after.

Unfortunately for Casper, his lead-out man Engoulvent was exhausted after yesterday and would not have the strength to do the necessary work in the impending sprint finish. With no other riders suitable for a lead out, Casper would have to make the final sprint on his own.

As the sprint started, Casper used his experience to position himself towards the front of the group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/231.jpg
Casper is on Simon Gerrans (Sky) wheel, in a crowded affair.

Yet, once again, Casper's finish was not where it was in late-February/early-March. With a slight incline in the finish, Casper could not overtake the leaders and finish in 5th on the day. Not a terrible result, but it effectively ended our hopes of accomplishing our sponsor goal. The second failure of the year.

Gerrans would ultimately prove the strongest in the end, showing he had recovered well since yesterday. Normally not a man for the sprint, the Aussie would take the win ahead of Leonardo Duque (Cofidis) and Assan Bazayev (Astana).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/232.jpg
Gerrans can't quite find the camera, but adds a good result on his palmarès.

No, Contador seems to be the winner Sad Too bad that Casper did not reach the form of February... But still a good 5th place!

Critérium International: Stage 3: Porto-Vecchio: 7.9km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/233.jpg

The final day was a short time trial around the streets of Porto-Vecchio, the commune that has wonderfully played host to the Critérium International for the past couple days. Surely, baring disaster, nothing will affect Alberto Contador's lead, as the man from Pinto should cruise to a dominating win. Below him, many of the minor places could shuffle.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/234.jpg
Jimmy Engoulvent set the fastest early time with 10'35". A mark that would stand for much of the day.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/235.jpg
Sébastien Joly finishing, would win the KOM jersey thanks to his Stage 1 breakaway.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/236.jpg
Jérôme Coppel would finish at 10'46" on the day. He would finish 17th overall in GC, the highest place Saur rider.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/237.jpg
Italian TT champion Marco Pinotti would best Engoulvent's time by 1 second.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/238.jpg
Tejay Van Garderen would set the best time with only 4 more riders on the road.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/239.jpg
But once again, no one could equal Contador. The race leader gritted his teeth hard to take another victory with a time of 10'22".

I like this little table at the end every month Grin Can you please post a short overview from Tiago Machado what he won until yet (want to see why he is 12th in the CQ)

Rui Costa was nice in Critérium International. Let's hope he hadn't already take the doping. Pfft

He technically hasn't won anything Wink

He came in 12th at the Vuelta a la Región de Murcia, 4th at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, and 2nd at Tirreno - Adriatico.

Yeah, there are quite a lot of cyclists currently riding in my game that are now awaiting suspension. Costa brothers, Mosquera, Dapena, Rossi, Contador...

I will probably let them ride the season as I await to see what happens in their cases, then give them the proper "injuries" in the db.

Also, I guess I will need to reinstate Pellizotti, which I will do at the end of the season.

Thank you Grin

The start of April will see Saur - Sojasun move back onto the mainland to take part in the one day Route Adélie de Vitré, a hilly classic. Last year, Jérôme Coppel won this race with Française des Jeux. The young rider will be looking to defend his title in his new team colors.

As the race began, an initial breakaway of over 10 riders got away. The group would stay away for around 30km before being reeled in. The riders in the move never seemed totally committed to making the effort required to stay away.

With 70km done on the day, Jérôme Coppel would attack and try to get away. Still not quite in shape, Coppel would test his legs, and, perhaps with some luck, sneak away. Only one rider went with him, Mats Boeve (Rabobank).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/241.jpg
Coppel went on the attack when no other rider appeared willing to.

The two riders got away, but Boeve seemed only interested in marking Coppel, as the Dutch rider wouldn't contribute any work, but then furiously rode to catch Coppel whenever the Saur rider tried to drop the dead weight.

Instead of wasting energy by trying to deal with Boeve, Coppel decided to just continue on.

Behind the two dueling breakaway riders, Clément Lhotellerie (Roubaix Lille Métropole), Pieter Jacobs (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator), and Thierry Hupond (Skil - Shimano) would attack and try to bridge.

They were able to make this connection with 43km left on the day. The five riders were 3'23" ahead of the main field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/242.jpg
The five lead riders.

It seemed likely that the break would be caught by the peloton, however, with the exception of Boeve, all the riders did have the strength to make the move count. They pushed on at a high pace, hoping to stay away.

Mats Boeve would be dropped with 24km left.

Cofidis and Landbouwkrediet were leading the peloton on at a very high speed, clearly worried about the lead riders. Their high pace started stretching out the peloton, and eating into the lead.

As the lead riders began the last lap of the circuit, they would be caught by the peloton.

With Coppel caught and exhausted, Saur's focus quickly turned to Sébastien Joly. Joly was brought to the front of the group by Guillaume Levarlet.

On the last climb of the day, 5km out, Joly would attack.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/243.jpg
Joly on the attack.

Joly's attack did not have a lot of bite, and he would be followed and passed by a very strong looking Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet). As the peloton chased the escaping riders, Joly would be caught.

De Waele still maintained a small margin heading into the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/244.jpg
De Waele speeding towards the line.

De Waele seemed to be taking his time opening up his sprint, but surely his attack had opened up a sufficient lead...

But no! Leonardo Duque would close incredibly fast and nip the Belgian at the line!

Grand Prix de Rennes: Rennes - Rennes: 192.9km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/246.jpg

The French peloton moves a little west and a little north to Brittany in order to participate in the Gran Prix de Rennes. Saur - Sojasun will be looking for a win, as it has been almost exactly a month since the team has tasted victory. Thankfully, today's race should be tailor made for fast man Jimmy Casper.

Standing in his way are some familiar foes in Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis), Leonardo Duque (Cofidis), Kenny Van Hummel (Skil - Shimano), William Bonnet (Bbox), and Enrico Rossi (Ceramica).

A break of 9 riders got away on the day. They would enjoy a bit of freedom, as their lead maxed out with 85km left at 5'38". At this point, Saur - Sojasun, Cofidis, and Bbox started to work together to reel in the break.

The BOTD.

While the teams have been competitors throughout the French season, they enjoyed a moment of cooperation and arrested the break with 16km left on the day.

As the teams began to organize their sprint trains, Bert De Waele, most likely very frustrated from several days ago, attempted a late attack. However, once again he would be thwarted, as he was chased down by Saur and Bbox.

Keeping the pace high heading into the final kilometers, a sprint was sure to ensue.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/248.jpg
The Saur - Sojasun sprint train in full force.

Casper was right on Jimmy Engoulvent's wheel, but stage scouting was not ideal, as when Casper opened up and rounded the final turn, he found himself on the outer edge.

The final bend.

Behind two Colnago riders and Dumoulin, Casper would need a great finish to make up for the mistake. He closed quickly, but would lose out to Dumoulin and Van Hummel. Both of those riders took much better routes in the final kilometer.

It has been a fairly barren run for the SS, though it is hard competition in France for sure. I think what always makes things tough for any of the Continental squads is the unpredictability of the fields.

A shame that TdF chances seem remote with Bbox and Cofidis around.

The stage reporting here is very readible and contrary to beagles thoughts I do read them! (joking, my head was in two places on my previous comments!)

Yeah, I kind of made a mistake by banking on being accepted into Paris-Nice. Pretty much messed up a lot of my rider's fitness programs for the early parts of the season. There are some races a little later in the month which I should have a good shot at winning.

TDF chances are looking quite bleak at the moment.

Casper is earning his paycheck (he's 30% of my team's budget). Him and Joly have been carrying the team so far.

Overview

The third Monument of the season, the Hell of the North, Paris-Roubaix. One of the oldest races in cycling, the riders will suffer over 250km and 28 cobbled sections. For some riders, winning this race will be their ultimate goal for their career, while others will just be hoping to survive the brutal conditions.

Favorites

Tom Boonen - (Quick·Step): In recent years, Paris-Roubaix has belonged to Boonen, with Tommeke winning in 2005, 2008, and 2009. Boonen should enter this race with the full support of his Quick·Step team, as he has shown good form so far this spring. While the Belgian superstar hasn't won this season, he has several good results with a 3rd in Ronde van Vlaanderen, 4th in Gent-Wevelgem, and a 3rd in Dwars door Vlaanderen.

If Boonen can find success once more, he will tie classics legend Roger De Vlaeminck, Monsieur Paris–Roubaix, for most wins all-time with 4.

Fabian Cancellara - (Team Saxo Bank): 2006 winner Fabian Cancellara enters this year, like Boonen, searching for a classics win. While Spartacus took the overall title in the Tour of Oman, he has been tantalizingly close in the spring classics, finishing 2nd in Ronde van Vlaanderen, Gent-Wevelgem, and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Perhaps most impressively, his 10th place in Tirreno-Adriatico illustrates just how strong Cancellara is at the moment.

Filippo Pozzato - (Team Katusha): Last week, Pippo took another step forward in his career by adding a 2nd Monument to his palmarès when he out-sprinted Cancellara to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen. With such a victory, the expectations have been elevated for the flashy Italian. Combined with the victory in KBC-Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde, Pozzato will be full of confidence.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/star.gifi985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/star.gif

Juan Antonio Flecha - (Sky Professional Cycling Team): With his new team, Flecha has been rejuvenated. Victories in Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Prijs Vlaanderen, and Dwars door Vlaanderen, have the Spanish veteran looking like a completely different rider than the one that left Rabobank with no victories in 2009. Flecha has performed well in Paris-Roubaix, finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but he has never been able to make the crucial breakthrough. Perhaps the team change will help remedy this.

Leif Hoste - (Omega Pharma - Lotto): The veteran Belgian will always be remembered in Paris-Roubaix history, despite never winning the race. In 2006, Hoste finished in 2nd, only to be disqualified, along with Peter Van Petegem and Vladimir Gusev, for riding through a closed level-crossing. Hoste has looked strong this season with some dangerous attacks and good results. He finished in 2nd to Flecha in both E3 Prijs Vlaanderen and Dwars door Vlaanderen.

Nick Nuyens - (Rabobank): With Flecha at Sky, leadership has been thrust on the Belgian Nuyens. With full support from the team, Nuyens has been dangerous in the spring classics, finishing 5th in Ronde van Vlaanderen, Gent-Wevelgem, 4th in Dwars door Vlaanderen, and 6th in E3 Prijs Vlaanderen. A winner of multiple semi-classics, a victory here would dramatically change Nuyens career.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/star.gif

Björn Leukemans - (Vacansoleil): A controversial rider, Leukemans has returned from his 2008 suspension to lead the Vacansoleil team in the spring classics. Leukemans hasn't had many great results this season and only finished in 15th in the Tour of Flanders. Nevertheless, the veteran Belgian rider could easily improve on his 2007 result of 4th.

Matti Breschel - (Team Saxo Bank): Certainly if the young Dane were on another team he would higher up on this list. However, being on the same team as Cancellara, Breschel often finds himself under the massive shadow cast by his superstar teammate. Nevertheless, Breschel has already shown his talents by winning Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne. Breschel has maintained his form and finished in 12th in Ronde van Vlaanderen.

Stijn Devolder - (Quick·Step): Stijn Devolder recently lost his vice grip on the Tour of Flanders last week, finishing in a disappointing 14th. While he has not found much success in Paris-Roubaix, his best finish being 7th in 2007, Devolder is still a very capable cobbled rider. Will the disappointment of Flander spur him on to something great in Paris-Roubaix?

Martijn Maaskant - (Garmin - Transitions): A former Rabobank trainee, Maaskant is a talented Dutch rider. In 2008, his debut season, Maaskant finished 4th in Paris-Roubaix, sparking a lot of hype. However, since than the Zuidland native has not been able to make a further breakthrough. With Johan Van Summeren injured and not in the squad, Maaskant will have the full support of the Garmin team.

Dark Horses

The 10 riders above are not the only riders who are capable of riding well during Paris-Roubaix. Being such an important race, all the teams bring their strongest cobbled riders. Hayden Roulston (Team HTC - Columbia), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas - Doimo), and Gert Steegmans (Team RadioShack) are riders who will be looking to repay the faith put in them by their teams.

Additionally, there are many strong riders who will serve as domestiques, but, given the right conditions, could make an impact. This list includes 2007 winner Stuart O'Grady (Team Saxo Bank), Greg Van Avermaet (Omega Pharma - Lotto), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Professional Cycling Team), and Wouter Weylandt (Quick·Step).

For France, the best hopes are Sylvain Chavanel (Quick·Step) and Frédéric Guesdon (Française des Jeux). Chavanel's result will likely depend on how much work he has to do for team leader Boonen. Guesdon, who was the last French winner in 1998 will be hoping to recapture that glory in what is likely his last season.

Notable in their absence will be Cervélo TestTeam who were refused entry. This means that strong riders like Thor Hushovd, Heinrich Haussler, and Roger Hammond will not be appearing.

Saur - Sojasun

One day, the team hopes to be able to win this prestigious race. But this season, the team enters this race just happy be a part of the spectacle. At this point, the team does not contain a rider capable of making a large impact in the race. Even so, it will be good to gain experience in this difficult race.

Jimmy Casper "leads" the team and will have Jimmy Engoulvent, Stéphane Poulhiès, Cyril Lemoine, Yannick Talabardon, Cyril Bessy, Rony Martias, and Fabrice Jeandesboz to help him get the highest placed possible.

Other News

Saur - Sojasun is happy to announce they have received wildcard entries into both La Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège. The team was however rejected from the Amstel Gold Race.

As well, the team recently competed in the Circuit Sarthe - Pays de la Loire, a five stage race . A strong performance by Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux) was enough to take a close victory over Christophe Moreau (Caisse d'Epargne) and Giovanni Visconti (ISD - Neri). Sébastien Joly was Saur - Sojasun's highest placed rider finishing in 7th. The team was not able to pick up any victories during the race.
