Great ride by Hoy.

Am I the only one happy with GB's performance here?

happy with hoy but that's about it

As Dave B would say "Look at the bigger picture"

but dave brailsford is like a stuck-fucking record

Who wins Olympic medals.

not doubting that, but he's hardly quotable - he's never gonna change from that same set reply. i saw no promise in the women's team sprint or team pursuit and so, apart from chris's win, i was not impressed.

Team sprint - valuable experience for Jess Varnish
Team pursuit - shows that we can no longer afford to allow Houvenaghel to keep doing the IP to keep up in the TP

no promise not no reasonWink

So Varnish' performance wasnt promising in any way in the development of British female sprinters beyond Pendleton?

sure whatever. but pendleton's performance was poor.

No it wasnt. She was the 2nd fastest of all competitors who did the 2nd lap, its just that the fastest was Krupeckaite, who was racing her on each occasion. Plus the flat out timed events are probably Pendleton's weaker aspect

And now to laugh heartily at Australia as their big medal hope, Jack Bobridge, has failed to reach the final.

Kiwi Jesse Sergent qualified fastest, 0.2 ahead of Phinney - Bobridge over a second back.

After so much hype from the Australians about how brilliant Bobridge was aswell

tht's ok - we'll get the last laugh tomorrow night

We'll see. Theres nothing much to go on in terms of British form, but the Australian pursuiters clearly arent where theyd like to be. There also has to be questions about Australian tactics, in that today Bobridge messed up by trying to go too fast too early, and Australia have never ridden the sort of times theyll need to ride to win Gold.

What happened to all the British sprinters from the last Olympics? bar Hoy and Pendelton I don't recognise any of the names.

I'd love for you to name the ones you don't know where they are. I could probably tell you.

Staff is out injured, to start you off.

Kenny, Edgar are the only names I can think of off the top of my head. But I thought Hoy was the oldest of the British team who dominated the Olympics, but I don't recognise Newton or Crampton etc. I know the long distance riders have all gone into road racing but I would assume the sprinters would have stuck around.

None of the sprinters have left.

Kenny is still around, check
Edgar also, but I dont expect him to make it to London
Matt Crampton only missed out on Beijing due to the high level of competition - he medalled in the Keirin at the 2008 worlds and it pretty even with Kenny in terms of quality - I expect the London Team Sprint team to be Kenny/Crampton/Hoy

Chris Newton. You dont recognise him? He has been riding Scratch and particularly Points races for years - always up there - and he medalled in Beijing. He isnt a sprinter anyway, he is an endurance rider.

"long distance riders have all gone into road racing"

No.

As already mentioned Newton is still around, and could be a potential rider for the Omnium in London.

Of the Team Pursuit team in Beijing. Geraint Thomas is focusing on the road for a year or two, but will return for London. Bradley Wiggins of course is on the road now, yes - and may or may not return. Then theres Paul Manning who retired, Ed Clancy who is still there, and Steven Burke who is now a firm part of the Team Pursuit team after riding the Individual Pursuit in Beijing

When I said all the long distance riders I meant Thomas, Cavendish and Wiggins.

I know the points race is long distance, I guess I didn't notice Newton in Beijing because that I was in Hong Kong and it was the only race with a vague chance of medalling so there was a lot of focus on him.

One other thing, Hoy is now 34, are his times slowing down, or does it look like he will be able to carry on until London?

He beat some PB's a few weeks back apparently. He's getting better. I think he'll do London, maybe Glasgow commonwealths, but i don't expect him to carry on much longer after that. Certainly not to Rio.

But Thomas, Cavendish and Wiggins are not all long distance riders - and they are all 3 who were on the road prior to Beijing anyway

And yes, Hoy is still the best sprinter in the world, he will easily carry on til London - barring injury or Frenchmen taking him out in Keirins

Time to stop the nonsense and focus on the important aspect:

Alex Rasmussen completely dominated the scratch race! After a couple of rounds, he, in time trial position, attacked from the peloton. Some Japanese guy went with him, barely took relays, yet had no chance in the final sprint.

That was awesome watching! Grin

On another note, it was fun to see Australia's women win gold in Team Pursuit while New Zealand, who were fighting for third against USA, took the World Record.

The Scratch and Point races have been odd. Meyer was the favourite for the points, he won. Rasmussen was the favourite for the Scratch, he won. That doesnt usually happen!

... which reminds me: Thanks for setting up the odds! I had them ready on my phone, so I knew who to look out for in each event Smile

Britain qualify fastest in the Team Pursuit with: 3-56.869
Australia: 3-58.185
New Zealand were quick, but faded in the final kilometre: 3-58.616
Denmark: 4-02.259

Australia improved well, with Cameron Meyer brought in - but at the end of the day, that Australia's strongest lineup, and its not Britain's
