Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Atlantius
Tour of Britain

Stage 5: Tavistock-Glastonbury

In spite of the early hills this should be a fairly quite stage probably ending in a bunch sprint.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-52_zpsbf92d78a.jpg
Early on the slope seems to take the edge of the attacks.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-53_zps1612d3af.jpg
Jesper pull away on the climb with a bunch of other riders to show and secure his mountain jersey.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-54_zps4f0f63d5.jpg
Again today we are fortunate in the composition of the break as Jesper is 6 minutes better than the second best placed rider in the break. That means we won’t have to chase the break as we would gain an even more solid lead if the break went home with a 10 minute lead...
For now Spidertech and Orica – GreenEdge have taken charge of the peloton.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-55_zps5e5ec6ae.jpg
Shortly after BMC and Endura join to help in the chase. With 86 km to go they have brought the peloton down to 38 riders with the 12-rider break only just over a minute ahead.

58 km to go and all are quiet in the peloton as Jesper Hansen leads them over the last KOM-sprint of the day. Surprisingly Geraint Thomas is all alone in front of the group.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-57_zps207e659a.jpg
Taylor Phinney attacks with about 10 km to go. No one really takes it seriously at first but with 7 km to he has a gap of about a minute.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-58_zps11d8b08e.jpg
For once we manage to build a decent train and with 2 km to go the white jersey is leading out the yellow.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-59_zpsbf87286d.jpg
Too late to catch the American though…
Once again Thomas is too strong for Thor in the sprint. A long season is beginning to set its mark on the big Norwegian.

Stage 6: King’s Lynn-Great Yarmouth
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-61_zps6db82d99.jpg
Pretty much as flat as they come. The mountain jersey is secured so for now our focus is solely the GC. If we can get a break to last home that would be great as it would prevent Thomas from gaining any more bonus seconds.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-62_zps2400a5cf.jpg
Just a quick assembly in the front to get some good snapshots for the sponsors with all our jerseys…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-63_zps50d2c184.jpg
Plenty of breakaway attempts early on, but the peloton is really not that keen on the thought of a big break today.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-64_zpseee41f47.jpg
Christensen works hard to sustain the breaks, but Orica – GreenEdge works even harder to kill them.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-65_zps83240c56.jpg
Still something good comes from the lack of breakaways as Thor picks up 6 seconds and points in the third sprint of the day.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-66_zps5effa3f7.jpg
With about 90 km to go a total of 6 riders manage to pull away from the peloton. As the best placed is more than 20 minutes behind in the GC we don’t mind them being out there or even winning the stage. So back to work for Orica, who continues to believe in Allan Davis.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-67_zpse37ffacf.jpg
With 40 km to go the breakers have just under four minutes to the peloton.
7.5 km to go and the break is reeled back in.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-68_zps97ba5524.jpg
Lars Bak was feeling great today so he called me on the radio begging to be allowed an early attack. At first I said no but he kept on nagging and with 5 km to go I gave in.
Orica had it all under control though…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-69_zps1debfcd5.jpg
Thomas took Hushovds wheel in the sprint and passed him with 500 m to go.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-610_zpseffacfe8.jpg
Didn’t matter much though as Hushovd had a really bad day and never was anywhere near the win…

Things are looking good for us at the moment, but only the mountain jersey is safe. The GC can still be decided on bonus seconds and Ludvigsson can't afford mistakes to keep hold of the youth jersey.

I believe in the guys, and with the battle for green still being so close Thomas shouldn't feel to sure that he will get something home from here!

Stage 7: Bury St.Edmonds-Colchester
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-71_zpscd4a67ce.jpg
Even flatter than yesterday, so pretty much same strategy. Depending on how the stage evolves we might have a go at the three intermediate sprints.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-72_zps2dc61ea5.jpg
The first break of the day get away surprisingly easy, but Orica – GreenEdge quickly show that they haven’t changed their attitude towards the race.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-73_zpsa7de7968.jpg
The attacking keeps on going so the first sprint is taken by a group of breakers.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-74_zps80723f04.jpg
The second sprint is taken by Thor ahead of a small group of breakaway riders. Thor is now in the lead of the points competition.
After that sprint several groups try to break away but it took a group with no Falcons to get the “Go” from Orica, so with 33 km to go Taylor Phinney has one minute to Rathe and Förster and 4’30’’ to the peloton.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-75_zps0267da3c.jpg
Once again we leave the work to the teams, who actually have something to win by reeling in the break…
With 20 km to go the peloton seem to give up on the chase and start preparing for a sprint to the 4th place.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-76_zps09dbaea7.jpg
Phinney takes the victory comfortably, while Davis once again is the strongest on the line.

Thanks to the bonus seconds Thor won early on the stage Geraint Thomas is now 24 seconds behind. That means he can no longer take the GC win thanks to bonus seconds! On top of that Hushovd now holds the points jersey 1 point ahead of Thomas before the last stage.

A short stage expected to be a feast for the sprinters, but we must not underestimate the hills on the route.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-82_zps2a7d5b9b.jpg
Plenty of attacking at first but on a stage as short as this one no one is really allowed away.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-83_zps6892305d.jpg
As usual the break is allowed to go as soon as we don’t send a rider in there. This is getting kind of annoying!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-84_zps3dfa8738.jpg
Once again Orica – GreenEdge take charge of chasing the sprint.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-86_zps378c4051.jpg
For us it’s all about Hushovd vs Thomas.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-87_zps5749c539.jpg
Orica gets rewarded for their work.

With 500 m both Hushovd and Thomas is far back in the group and pretty much level.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-09-Britain-89_zpsab5d2b96.jpg
On the line Thor was the fastest thus making sure to win the green jersey as well as the yellow.

This team have made many impressive performances over the last two years, but this is quite extraordinary.

Not only did we dominate all jersey-competitions but we even did it while winning for both Norway, Denmark and Sweden!

Vuelta a España

Just a quick overview of the last week in the Vuelta

The Last Mountains

In this last week Purito proved he was the strongest and most consistent on the climbs and that way he built a lead of more than five minutes before the final TT.
Getting Desperate

We really wanted a stage win, so the guys just kept on trying every day. Once again Kjell was the closest with his 2nd place on stage 18.
Stage 19 was not only the last chance to get the stage win, but Kjell actually had a chance to win the mountain jersey as well.
He did very good throughout the stage, but on the very last hill Rodríguez picked up just enough points to take the jersey back.
Another day alone

One final Timetrial to decide the GC. Purito had more than five minutes, so the victory was quite certain but the places 2-5 was within a few minutes so the rest of the podium was up for grabs.
Cancellara took another win ahead of Samuel Sánchez.

Stage Winners
Stage 16: Nicholas Roche, AG2R La Mondiale
Stage 17: Joaquím Rodríguez, Katusha
Stage 18: Carlos Barredo, Rabobank
Stage 19: Diego Ulissi, Lampre - ISD
Stage 20: Fabian Cancellara, RadioShack - Nissan
Stage 21: Pierrick Fédrigo

Great race for Thor and the team

An alright Vuelta. Better luck next time

Carlstrom so close to winning the Mountain Classification at the Vuelta Frown

Atlantius
Thanks for the support. We just didn't have that last bit of luck in the Vuelta. Carlström was in the decisive break at least four days two of those he finished second so we wasn't far from a stage win.

And then losing the mountain jersey with 3 pts on the very last hill of the race. Guess it's fair to say that Purito is a slightly better climber than Kjell Carlström so no shame in losing to him...

Coming right up: World Championships!

World ITT Championships

The obvious favourites today is Tony Martin, Cancellara and Wiggins. The only of these who have shown anything lately is Cancellara.
The Swiss rider was flying all through the Vuelta, so the question is if he has been able to maintain his good form or he has topped too early. Another rider to keep an eye on will be American Taylor Phinney who showed tremendous form in Tour of Britain and is developing in to a great TT-rider.

As for the Nordic riders (Finland is not participating) both Denmark and Sweden has sent riders in good form namely Alex Rasmussen and Gustav Larsson. The Norwegians will clearly be hoping for Boasson Hagen, but his current form is a big question. Still I hope to be able to cheer him to victory as I will be riding in the car behind him.

In the surprising department as many as six unemployed riders will be riding today.

While waiting for the Norwegian riders to go out I keep an eye on future Falcon Fuglsang. He is only provisional 5th at the first intermediate, so he’s not having the best of days.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT3_zps1b3ef1fb.jpg
My first rider is Fredrik Wilmann. He is probably the fittest of the Norwegians, but it will be highly surprising if he pulls of a top-result. In goal he gets a provisional 8th while Fuglsang surprises everyone with the worst time so far.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT4_zpsa6bf3615.jpg
Mads Christensen might be a man for a surprise as he gets provisional 5th behind Phinney when he passes the first intermediate. The American continues his strong effort and gets provisional best while Christensen surprising is 6th at this time.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT5_zps4516e97f.jpg
Only Falcon in action today is Danish Champion Lasse Bøchman.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT6_zpsad101eff.jpg
Surprisingly Christina Watches – Onfone rider Intxausti takes full advantage of the hill and beats Phinney by 3 seconds!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT7_zps88279cb7.jpg
No World Champion for the Danish CT-team though as Boom catches up with Nordhaug 4 km from goal looking to set a new best time. 19 seconds faster than the Spaniard.
Bøchman is not in top shape at the moment but still manage a provisional 8th, certainly approved from me!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT8_zps4222215b.jpg
Only defender of the Swedish pride today is Larsson. He does well getting provisional 3rd on the first intermediate. The hill was too much for the Swede and he only manage a provisional 7th on the 2nd intermediate and a 9th in finish.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT10_zps4141102b.jpg
Edvald is fighting his best all day, but he just isn’t fit enough today. I hope I can cinvince him to replace Sky with my team after next season - then I'll make a World Champion of him!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT9_zps0c3797a3.jpg
Alex Rasmussen is looking surprisingly strong as he gets provisional best in the first intermediate! Hills are not his best friends but he still manage a 2nd 1 second behind Boom with 10 km to go and 11 seconds behind in finish.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT11_zps82c83f84.jpg
On both intermediate times Bobridge completely destroyed all competition. In fact he even passed Tejay Van Garderen short before the finish line.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT12_zps27084f71.jpg
Cancellara is strong today as he catches up with Luis Leon Sanchez, and that is just enough to beat the young Australian by 9 seconds.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/Falcon%20STARK%202013/09-19-VM-ITT13_zpsee34bb57.jpg
Defending champion Tony Martin has been trailing by a few seconds on both intermediate times, but does that mean he has saved energy for the last kilometers?
No! Bronze for the German and a historic five wins for the Swiss.

As a Dane I'm proud to see Alex doing so well today.
As a team manager of Falcon - STARK I'm proud to see Lasse finishing 20th though not in great shape.

As a major part of The Nordic Cycling Project I'm thrilled to see as many as four Nordic riders in the top 20!
