The first of the three stages in the Giro della Calabria brings the riders from Melito to Catanzaro. The beginning of the stage is flat, but the last 10 kilometres are uphill, with parts up to 12%!
img88.imageshack.us/img88/5509/1route.jpg

The first action in the stage is a memorable one. Why? The first action made by Thomas Dekker since his doping ban! He goes for the 6 bonus seconds that will be divided in the first Intermediate sprint, and he gets them!
img847.imageshack.us/img847/5144/2is1.jpg

After Dekker lets himself fall back in the peloton, a group of 6 riders ride away and form the break of the day. Enrico Zen (Androni), Radoslav Romanik (Bank BGZ), Dmitriy Fofonov (Astana), Alexandr Kvachuk (ISD), Peter Kusztor (Atlas) and Giuseppe De Maria (De Rosa) get a maximum lead of 5 minutes. The riders in the peloton are a bit grumpy today. The reason is simple: no sun in Calabria but rain.
img802.imageshack.us/img802/7138/3botd.jpg

When the last climb to Catanzaro has started, the 6 get caught. Our domestiques have done the pace to catch them and the timing was perfect!
img13.imageshack.us/img13/3861/45kmf.jpg

In the next 2 kilometres happens a lot: Thomas Dekker was on the first row of the peloton, but on the wrong side of the road. Why? He got blocked by BOTD-Enrico Zen, somehow couldn't pass him and lost about 50 places in the peloton! Furious as hell, he tried to regain the lost time and places, but had to settle with the 19th place at '49.
Back to the front of the peloton. Marc de Maar takes the lead and tries to bring Wilco Kelderman in an excellent position to win this stage. But De Maar goes that fast, he creates a gap! With 2400 metres to go, only Grega Bole and Aitor Pérez Arrieta (both Lampre) are able to follow them.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/6875/52400m.jpg

Also Bole and Pérez Arrieta break, so the 2 Monster's are all alone with 2 kilometres to go.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/4720/62km.jpg

Marc de Maar starts his sprint with 1500 metres to go with Kelderman still in his wheel. Enrico Gasparotto tries to close the gap and his '20 behind. Thomas de Gendt is in 4th place at '35, the peloton follows at '44.
img189.imageshack.us/img189/2883/71700m.jpg

When De Maar looks back over his shoulder, he sees that Kelderman can't overtake him. Keldermanis nodding his head, saying that De Maar can go on to win this stage. And the National champion of Curaçao does, it's his first win for the team! Kelderman makes it a 1-2 for us, while Enrico Gasparotto finishes in 3rd place at '10. De Gendt takes the 4th place at '37 and a group with Dekker finishes at '49.

Today's winner

Word from the DS
What a great stage for us: 1-2-4, couldn't be better. Only disappointment is that Dekker got blocked, but he feels very strong. I'm really happy for De Maar with his first win for us. Last year he was very close in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge and now finally a win, although the plan was to bring Kelderman the win! Think we're gonna defend the lead.

So FreitasPCM: you're the winner!

2nd stage and again the riders need some climbing skills. The ros arises immediately after the start, with the first 60 kilometres being a lot of short and steep ascending and descending parts. Then follows a long flat part, untill the "final" climb, about 8km at 7%. After 20 flat and descending kilometres, the last 1.5km is uphill again, with parts up to 10%. So a variated course that can shake up the GC!
img442.imageshack.us/img442/5509/1route.jpg

In the first long climb, a breakaway group is form, consisting of 8 riders: Frantisek Padour (PSK), Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil), Uros Murn (Adria), Eros Capecchi (Liquigas), Gorazd Stangelj (Astana), Andrea Tonti (Pisanellastoria), Yuri Metlushenko (ISD) and Carlos José Ochoa (Androni). They get a maximum advantage of almost 9 minutes, before we decide to let our domestiques start the chase.
img141.imageshack.us/img141/1017/2botd.jpg

The peloton leaves the seaside and starts the climb. Immediately Thomas Dekker attacks and sets a high pace. There are 27 kilometres remaining and the leading group has a gap of 3 minutes.
img687.imageshack.us/img687/5972/327km.jpg

Dekker gets joined by Dario Cataldo (Omega Pharma) and GC's number 2 Enrico Gasparotto. The 3 close the gap to the leading group and at the summit, 11 riders are up front (Capecchi is first on the summit in front of Murn and Dekker). And what about our other riders? A group with Leandro Bertagnolli & Emanuelle Sella (Lampre), Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) and GC-leader Marc de Maar follows at 1'59. A third group with Wilco Kelderman, Thomas de Gendt and Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago) is 2'25 behind.
img59.imageshack.us/img59/4459/421km.jpg

In the descending part, the leading group doesn't cooperate. Dekker refuses to work for the group, as his 3 team mates are closing in. So the pace of the leading group drops and 10 kilometres before the finish, a group of 27 riders can prepare themselves for the win.
But then there is another attack with 5km to go by Thomas Dekker. With a daily form of +5, and still angry about yesterday's race, he has a fierce attack that no one can follow.
img810.imageshack.us/img810/8995/55km.jpg

Knowing that the last 1500 metres are uphill, Dekker rides a little bit on reserve. Because of that, the chasing group comes closer and when the climb starts, the lead is only 5 seconds!
img521.imageshack.us/img521/6686/61500m.jpg

Dekker is able to keep a gap to the chasing 26. Only Enrico Gasparotto is capable of staying close to the Dutch rider, but that's not enough. In his 2nd race after his doping ban, Thomas Dekker takes his first win! Enrico Gasparotto follows at '7, and that's enough to be the next leader in the GC. Marc de Maar finishes in 5th place at '21, and now is 4 seconds behind the Italian rider in the GC.

GC
As already mentioned, Enrico Gasparotto overtakes Marc de Maar and can put on the leader jersey. With Kelderman in 3rd, Dekker in 4th and De Gendt in 6th, and for Lampre Bole in 5th and Bertagnolli in 7th, this edition of the Giro della Calabria has turned into a Monster-Lampre battle!

Word from the DS
Although we lost the leader's jersey today, and possibly the win in the GC, we are thrilled with the return of Thomas Dekker! Nothing more to say!

The last stage from Pizzo to Reggio Calabria. It is classified as a hilly stage, but we don't expect some changes in the GC because from the last summit remain 47 flat kilometres.
img838.imageshack.us/img838/2632/1ploeg.jpg

A short summary of the stage: 9 riders from the BOTD, with Santo Anza (Vacansoleil) being the best placed rider in the GC (33rd at 4'14). We don't want to chase them, Lampre doesn't. So it will be decided between the 9. The maximum gap is 7 minutes, so Anza is the virtual GC-winner for a while, but in the end, we decide to close the gap (with the help of Lampre). And of course, we are enjoying the beautiful sunny Calabrian coast line........... NOT! Rain again.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/4092/2peloton.jpg

But then with 23 kilometres to go, there is a crash of the GC's number 7 Leandro Bertagnolli! We haven't seen it and continue the pace, Lampre stops helping us and the result is that the breakaway wins and Bertagnolli looses 4 minutes to the peloton today.
img535.imageshack.us/img535/8550/3bertagnolli.jpg

The leading group finishes the stage with an advantage of 1'53 to tthe peloton. It turns out to be a 1-2 for Vacansoleil: Marco Marcato wins the stage and Santo Anza gets second. Simone Stortoni (Colnago) gets third. Simone Ponzi (Liquigas) wins the sprint of the peloton.

GC winner
Gasparotto seems to have a good form early in the season. Last year he won the Tour de San Luis and the Strade Bianche, this year the Giro della Calabria. Simply because he was the most consistent rider in the first 2 stages.

Word from the DS
With 2 riders in the Top 3 and 4 in the Top 6, and also 2 stage wins, we can be very happy with this Giro della Calabria. Only thing is that we didn't won the GC. What if Dekker hadn't got blocked in the first stage..... What if..... Oh well, we're happy!

So, party time!

The 16th edition of the Gran Premio Costa degli Etruschi. The 186 kilometre route starts with a hilly part, but because the last 40 kilometres are pretty flat, the race mostly ends in a mass sprint. Alessandro Petacchi has the most wins here, 5 in total!
img41.imageshack.us/img41/1493/2gpcostaetruschialtimet.jpg

Also the 2011-edition ended in a mass sprint and Sky's Greg Henderson was the fastest sprinter, beating Bernardo Riccio.

** Alex Rasmussen (Nespresso), Enrico Rossi (Pisanellastoria), Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre)
* Grega Bole (Lampre), Marco Bandiera (Omega Pharma), Danilo Napolitano (Acqua et Sapone)

Our goal
We aim for a top 5.

The race kicks with under sunny conditions (is this possible???) and 4 man go on an adventure: Thomas Peterson (Itera), Lilian Pommier (Atlas) and Antonio D'Aniello & Omar Lombardi (Colnago). The peloton makes a big mistake, because they let the 4 gain a gap that is too big. 67 kilometres before the finish, the lead is 10 minutes!
img408.imageshack.us/img408/1287/5botd.jpg

Starting the last lap of 16.6 kilometres, Thomas Peterson decides to attack. The 3 others work together to catch the American again. The peloton is still 3 minutes behind.
img94.imageshack.us/img94/2540/616km.jpg

With 5 kilometres to go, Peterson still has a small margin to the chasing three of 21 seconds. The peloton is coming quickly, but with 1'17 behind, they will be too late.
img256.imageshack.us/img256/5672/75km.jpg

The attack costed Peterson too much energy, so he gets outsprinted by Antonio D'Aniello, the best sprinter in the BOTD. Peterson gets 2nd, Lombardi 3rd.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/8425/8finish.jpg

Mauro Finetto wins the sprint of the peloton for the 5th place. Best placed Monster Energy-rider is Jens Keukeleire in 11th place.
