Vuelta a España 2009

Funny how the Cunego fans are crawling out of the woodwork with outlandish predictions when he only won because nobody cared about him enough to chase him down.

Anyway, the doping busts at Euskaltel clearly have had an effect on Igor Antón. 25 minutes behind today.

Fuglsang is young and I noticed in the Dauphine that after a week he was not very good in the last mountain stage. I think he lacks a lot in the recup. area. But even then this was an extremely bad day.

Cunego is back, haven't seem him climbing like this in years, almost forgot he once could do it. Too bad he already lost so much time in the GC.. But maybe he just doesn't care anymore, and that's what he probably needed, a stressless run-up to a Grand Tour.

Gesink also very good, he still has troubles with accelerations, but when having anything left, he attacks and finishes 3rd. Valverde as always staying in the wheels and waiting for the sprint. He probably picked another stage to attack. He doesn't need to do it now.

I don't think Cobo will be there, he was dropped early...

Atm I think the first three will be the same, but in random order. 4th Gesink, and beyond that it's anyone's guess

I wouldnt say great ride by cunego was good but not great as the favourites didnt bother marking him. Will be interesting to see if he says in now though as he might think he can win. Also look at when he won the giro how many top class riders were racing and compare it to this years vuelta. Quite similar i would say Pfft

Ehhmmm, basically everything you say here is wrongWink

1) It was a great ride by Cunego, won his first stage in a GC since 04, and took 44 seconds on the favorite group with a 2km attack. An impressive ride, eventough they don't consider him the biggest threat.

2) I think Cunego knows he will probably not going to win, getting back 1.30 on Valverde, Sanchez and Evans will be extremely hard, also with another TT coming

3) Compare Honchar, Simoni, Cioni, Popovych and McGee(8th), with Valverde,Sanchez,Basso,Evans, Gesink ,Vinokourov e.t.c Wink

?

When the official results were published, I posted how far back he and Antón (the two big disappointments of the day) were. That's all.

I'm not so sure. During the time trial yesterday I started getting this irrational unexplainable feeling that Gesink is going to be trading blow for blow fighting for the win.

And I'm sticking to that thought

That's not a clever argument, since NO Cunego fan ever suggested he was superman today. I'm just saying that for once, when he finally is able to be 100% in a grand tour (like Giro 2006, 2007), he does something good by:

1. His last peak was back in March.
2. Nobody cared about him so he was allowed to go
3. He didn't go 100% in neither of the two TTs in this Vuelta, so among the mountain men, he was extremely fresh.

Actually, no one paid enough attention to him last Vuelta, but he was very close to this shape, only missing a good result by having a flat tire on the descent of the last mountain before Angliru. So he only screwed up Tour 2008 and Giro 2009. For a clean guy, that's fairly ok.

Dunno. He said he was gonna attack as soon as he can or is able to, as he doesn't like waiting. Today he was at his limit a few times, but in the end still had something left to attack with.

But my gut feeling still tells me Valverde and Evans are stronger. And Sanchez and Basso are equal and depending on daily form better or worse.
We'll see what happens.

If the others keep looking at eachother every time Gesink attacks like today, then anything can happen.

Well Cobo didn't have a good day but I believe he is better than what he did today. Also Valjavec and Mosquera will be losing a lot in the final TT. As to Tondo maybe his wheel-sucking skills will earn him a top10 but he'll have to improve!

And guys, Valverde will have a bad day. I shouldn't have to tell you that. Also he doesn't have Contador to give him the GC like he did in the Dauphiné. On the other hand Evans will have to find a way to maintain the maillot d'oro, otherwise he'll be played in the mountains like CSC did in 08 Tour

Vino ??? He did nothing today. Valverde always has a bad day. Basso back form his ban. Gesink is stilll improving. Sanchez is a good gt not a great gt rider (im a fan of him to) and you have people like sastre contador menchov missing thats why i say the field is quite weak.

Also wyman you cant claim im pretending i didnt think he did well as i was wondering where he was and you know it. Also i put pcm money on him lmfao. Grin

Also.....Remi DeGregorio is last on stage. I thought he was next big thing?
