Those Saxo Bank bastards pulled the same one on me on the 2015 Paris Nice this morning. Other than the TT, there's still a hilly stage, right? |

I should maybe have let Fränk go, but that's easy to say now. There is one more hilly stage, but that one has a looong, flat run-in, so I'm not very optimistic.

17.02.2011: Amgen Tour of California
Stage 4
San José - Modesto: 168.1km
Tactics meeting
After the overall victory probably slipped away yesterday, we have decided to try and salvage as much success from this race as possible. Today we'll try setting up something for rookie Andrew Talansky, although he's far from being a brilliant sprinter.
Levi Leipheimer was like a locomotive today, and when he swung off, Hincapie and Talansky found themselves in pole position!
Talansky was fighting Boris Shpilevski for the win! What a sprint debut by our young man!
Shpilevski proved to be the strongest in the end, but Talansky got a great 2nd place. He's not capable of holding top speed for very long, but this was a promising start for Andrew.

18.02.2011: Amgen Tour of California
Stage 5
Merced - Clovis: 186.1km
Tactics meeting
Talansky showed good promise yesterday, so today we'll be giving him support once again. If he can survive all the hills, that is.
The somewhat hilly profile took its toll on some riders today. The rider placed 2nd overall, Alessandro Ballan, found himself in the grupetto and would plummet down the overall rankings by the end of the day.
Levi Leipheimer once again did a splendid job as lead-out man, so our train was once again positioned in front when the peloton closed in on the finish line.
Hincapie released Talansky, who was going well today! Could he keep his speed up long enough to reach the line?
He could! A fantastic win for young Andrew Talansky! We didn't expect him to shine this early when we signed him. Now we can go home happy!

Thanks to all! I'm really happy about this win. Levi is awesome as a lead-out man, just time trialing away from everybody.
Can anyone with the power to do so please remove the spambot posts? |

19.02.2011: Amgen Tour of California
Stage 6
Visalia - Paso Robles: 216.5km
Tactics meeting
With Talansky taking the win yesterday, our hopes our high for today's flat stage. This stage should see more of the pure sprinters hanging in there though, as there are no hills to take the sting out of them.
Talansky did a good job today as well, but the Lampre duo Hushovd and Ballan were just too fast. Thor Hushovd got his second win of the season, after he won the GP Costa degli Etruschi earlier in February.

Good win, pity about Levi.
Also quite insane to see him so old with such good stats still. I'm keeping it real with PCM07, and by the time a guy is 37, they are oooold and decrepit.

20.02.2011: Amgen Tour of California
Stage 7
Solvang: 24.5km
Tactics meeting
The Solvang TT is the pivotal stage in this race, but it probably won't have much to say regarding the overall victory this year. I see no way that Leipheimer can gain two and a half minute on such a good rider against the clock as Stijn Devolder. Our third stage win in California is a strong possibility though.
Young Taylor Phinney has done nothing so far in this race, but today he did at least get the early best time.
It was subsequently beaten by Sestili of Ceramica Flaminia, who sliced 7 seconds off Phinney's time.
George Hincapie has been superb as Talansky's last lead-out man over the past few days. Today he could ride for his own chances, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Best time for Hincapie, 4 seconds ahead of Sestili.
Levi Leipheimer performed strongly as expected. He was in a different class compared to provisional leader Hincapie, and finsihed 1'27 faster!
Levi got the stage win, which is good, but this man made sure he kept his yellow jersey. Stijn Devolder finished 2nd in the time trial, only 28 seconds behind Leipheimer. Unless a miracle happens during the last two stages; congratulations to Devolder for the overall win!

21.02.2011: Amgen Tour of California
Stage 8
Santa Clarita - Pasadena: 143.6km
Tactics meeting
Levi made it three stage wins so far yesterday. Could today bring us the fourth? The hills could present an opportunity for a breakaway, which we plan to be part of. If that doesn't pay off, Talansky is capable of a good result in the sprint.
Popovych was our man in the break. The Ukranian was the main pace-setter, and over the mountain top they held a lead of 6'30 over the peloton.
38km of flat road remained when the escapees finished the descent. The gap was still almost five minutes. This could well work!
Popovych followed when breakaway companion Kristensen of Designa Køkken tried to go solo with 12km remaining. Popo's lead over the peloton was 2'20 now. Very promising, as he looked to be the strongest rider in the break.
The pack turned up the pace during the last kilometers, but Popovych still had a 45 seconds lead when he decided to go on his own.
The big scary shadow of the peloton was fast approaching under the red kite. Could Popovych hold on? Come on! He had to make it!
Noo! Brave Popovych was overtaken just a few meters from the line, and saw Hushovd grab his second victory in California. Oh God! This was so close!
