Stage 5

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya23.png

This time it was Contador who launched the attacks, at the foot of the long final climb.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya24.png

He waited for teammate Anton, but Anton struggled and would be forced to drop back as he faded.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya25.png

4 stage wins in a row for Contador! (We have won all 5 stages so far in this race)

2nd yet again for Gomez Marchante

It reminds me of the 2008 Tour, where Cadel Evans and Silence-Lotto won every stage and the overall - just kidding, but not...

SportingNonsense
It is quite fun having Contador going well in a tour where there really isnt any good in-form opposition for him Pfft

I demand you win every stage in Catalunya AngryAngryAngry

Anyway...awesome stuff with Contador, you've got to be hopeful for Le Tour

5 in 5... hmmm pretty much domination

Without internet for much of today, Ive actually completed the Giro now Pfft

Firstly, Catalunya:

Stage 6

We thought maybe a break could succeed in the flat stage today so Millar went with the break. But 6th overall Gil went too.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya28.png

The break were caught with 20km to go so it will come to a sprint. Hagen is behind Rigotto and infront of Hushovd.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya29.png

But there was nothing Hagen could do about Rigotto taking 2nd as the Italian stormed to a win.

Stage 7
Some riders did their best to take down Contador as we neared the finish. But he stayed upright.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya31.png

Kirchen was amongst the fallers so Anton will finish 4th in the GC.

Hagen this time took a leadout from fellow Norwegain Arvesen.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/catalunya32.png

But again, Rigotto was unstoppable.

Oh come on, it was practically 9 minutes - only two seconds short Pfft

The two 2nd places helped Hagen get even better at sprinting

Stage 11

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro60.png

This should give the GC a shake up. It currently stands at:
1 Alejandro Valverde CAISSE D'EPARGNE 41h36'42
2 Bernhard Kohl TEAM ASTANA + 3'35
3 Franco Pellizotti LIQUIGAS + 5'25
4 Jurgen Van den Broeck PREDICTOR - LOTTO + 5'40
5 Riccardo Riccò SAUNIER DUVAL - PRODIR + 5'52
6 Haimar Zubeldia RABOBANK + 7'04
7 Amets Txurruka EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI + 7'34
8 Aleksandr Pliuschin DFL - CYCLINGNEWS - LITESPEED + 9'28
9 Danilo Di Luca UNIBET.COM + 9'54
10 Rigoberto Urán DFL - CYCLINGNEWS - LITESPEED + 9'59
11 Damiano Cunego TEAM ASTANA + 10'23
12 Fran Pérez DFL - CYCLINGNEWS - LITESPEED + 10'45
13 Paolo Savoldelli EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI + 10'47
14 Leonardo Bertagnolli LIQUIGAS + 10'50
15 Ruggero Marzoli DFL - CYCLINGNEWS - LITESPEED + 10'53

Leonardo Bertagnolli went on a solo KoM point chasing breakaway
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro61.png

While in the peleton, the tough climbs saw many riders get dropped early

Zubeldia:
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro62.png

Txurruka, Cunego, Pereiro, Caucchioli:
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro63.png

Pellizotti (With Marzoli, Uran and Efimkin in the group a little ahead that has also lost contact)
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro64.png

Perez also couldnt quite hang on in the descent
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro65.png

Bertagnolli was caught with 78km still to go
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro66.png

And Bernhard Kohl used that climb to break clear
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro67.png

Vandenbroeck, Piepoli, Di Luca, Ricco, Pliuschin and Valverde are in the next group
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro68.png

Onto the final climb and Ricco and Di Luca attack - no response from Valverde!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro69.png

They reach up to Kohl leaving Valverde, Vandenbroeck and Pliuschin behind
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro70.png

But Kohl cracks:
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro71.png

And then Valverde rides off first Vandenbroeck, and then Pliuschin
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro72.png

Di Luca is too good for Ricco
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro73.png

And Danilo di Luca won the stage. He can still win this race.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro74.png

Ricco is 2nd while Valverde is 3rd
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro75.png

Pliuschin comes in with a great 4th place
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro76.png

While at the other end of the spectrum, Anuar Manan and 81 others trail in over an hour behind
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro77.png

Despite a great 4th place, Pliuschin remains 8th in the GC

Stage 12

A flat transition stage saw Geraint Thomas go with the break
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro78.png

But it would be caught. He and Gardeyn were the last to be reached, with 16km to go.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro79.png

Anuar Manan was not strong enough to sprint, in which Danniele Bennati made good advantage of a Cofidis leadout and the poor positioning of Petacchi and teammate Napolitano.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro80.png

Only Bazayev could beat Bennati, but the Kazakh champ could not do so. Bennati wins!

Stage 13

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro82.png

Winning a stage and taking the KoM jersey has seemingly made Di Luca feel he is invincible as he goes on the attack very early today with former teammate Leonardo Bertagnolli.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro83.png

Although Di Luca would leave Bertagnolli behind on the second of the days climbs.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro82.png

But ultimately, Di Luca has destroyed any hope of retaining his Giro crown. He is caught a couple of climbs before the finish and immediately dropped.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro85.png

Pliuschin struggles up the penultimate climb as he tries to keep with the other big riders. Perez and Uran are both there to help him.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro86.png

Meanwhile, Valverde and Ricco go clear
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro88.png

They worked together well over the penultimate climb and up the short final climb until the final couple of kilometres of the stage where Ricco cracked.

Valverde takes the stage
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro89.png

Ricco finished 2nd while it seems Monfort and Brajkovic have recovered from the injuries received in the crash in the early stages that wrecked their gc hopes. Monfort takes 3rd, Brajkovic 6th
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro90.png

This stage was very tough and Pliuschin could not make it to the end without running out of energy so Perez was the best DFL rider in 10th.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro91.png
Pliuschin finished 11th and reamins 8th in the GC.

Di Luca finished nearly 16 minutes after Valverde, and slips to 11th.

Vogels, Gardeyn, Roesems, McEwen, Dockx, Korff, Ziegler, Radochla, Jegou, Fothen, Schulze, Bonomi, Trampusch and Kaggestad were outside the time limit.

Stage 14

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro92.png

In Stage 13, the 4th overall rider Di Luca threw away his GC hopes with an early attack. On Stage 14, the rider now in 4th overall is Jurgen Vandenbroeck. And he has gone on an early attack.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro93.png

And as expected, it turns out to be an idiotic move by the Belgian. He is caught with 62km to go, at the foot of the big climb of the day, as Bernhard Kohl charges past.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro94.png

Kohl (3rd Overall +7'22) is in a league of his own today. He reaches the summit with a huge advantage. Its just a 50km descent to the finish now.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro95.png

It is a massive 4 and a half minutes before Valverde and Ricco reach the summit
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro96.png

Pellizotti, Txurruka, Monfort, Zubeldia and Brajkovic are in the next climb. While Vandevelde, Cobo and Sella are also ahead of Pliuschin. I decided not to attack and instead had Efimkin, Marzoli and Uran set a tough pace.

Kohl's lead over Valverde and Ricco peaked at 5 minutes and although it began to come down in the last 10km, the Austrian still takes a comfortable victory.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro97.png

Valverde just outsprints Ricco for 2nd place, 3 and a quarter minutes behind Kohl.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro98.png

Pellizotti leads in the next group, nearly 6 minutes down.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro99.png

Pliuschin takes 12th as he leads home a 23 man group, 10 minutes behind Kohl
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/giro100.png

Di Luca lost a further minute on that, while Horner and teammate Vandenbroeck finished 25 minutes behind Kohl.
