Some stats for this season:
Also Westbrook's USG of 38.4 is the second of all time, behind Kobe's 38.7 in 05/06.
Picks:
Hawks in 4 - BROLO might take one for the Nets chasing $$.
Cavs in 5 - Stevens is a great coach, but Cavs have that Lebron guy.
Bulls in 5 - Gasol/Gibson/Noah against Ilyasova/Zaza/Henson, hmm.
Wiz in 7 - Both teams kinda suck, it's a coin flip.
Dubs in 4 - Same as the Nets, BROW might give one to the Pelicans.
Rox in 4 - Everything it's possible in the playoffs, but really Mavs look kinda done to me.
Spurs in 7 - This is must watch! 2 top 5 teams.
Griz in 7 - 2 banged-up teams. HCA will be very important for Memphis.

So, great NBA season with both conferences full of suspense right to the end of the season, so I'll put in my two cents.
MVP - Curry. Reluctantly. I'm not too sure GS would be an absolutely horrible team without him, they still have Thompson, Green ... etc etc. Where would Rockets be without Harden, considering Howard missed most of the year, Jones too, Beverley...afaik Ariza is the only ironman on this team really. But I will put away my hometown bias for this one. =)
DPOTY - Green. I think this is easy choice. I'm glad roturn mentioned Gobert, watched quite a few Jazz games (mainly because I always bet Jazz ATS at home, absolute steal every time), this guy is an absolute beast. Didn't know much before, just appeared out of nowhere it seems.
MIP - Gobert. As mentioned above. Granted I don't watch the East very much, so not 100% on this one.
6th man - Mirotić. Am I alone on this one? Again I don't watch East that much. Maybe watched only 10-15 Chicago games this season, mostly towards the end.
Rookie - Wiggins. Not much to say.
Coach - Hawks one. I forgot his name. Not a particularly stellar roster, good to be #1 in the East. Good coaching.
Now onto the matchups --
Hawks - Nets : Hawks in 5. Old group of guys from Brooklyn not playing bad recently, so I don't think the games will be blowouts either. Still, not enough to be competitive.
Cavs - Celtics : Cavs in 4. It's not close.
Bulls - Bucks : Bulls in 5. Outside MCW and Greek Freak, what does Milwaukee have? They are simply going to get eaten up in the paint.
Raptors - Wizards : Raptors in 7. Giving them the edge due to homecourt, but couldn't be more close. Both these teams have the same tendency, play pretty good 2 out of 3 nights, but count on them to shit a brick in any given game. Maybe it comes down to who's more clutch between Wall/Beal and Lowry/DeRozan/Lou. I don't know.
Warriors - Pelicans : Warriors in 6. To be honest, Warriors play a style of basketball good for regular season, okayish for the playoffs. Plus they're really not too convincing on the road. I'll give the Pelicans 2 games.
Rockets - Mavs : Rockets in 7. These two teams play a similar style of basketball really. I don't think there's gonna be much defense in this series besides Howard. But I'm taking the Rockets for a few reasons 1) homecourt, 2) Harden is a better finisher than anyone on the Mavs roster 3) Dwight > Tyson. However there is no chance Rockets finish this one fast, like sosososik said (remember we have no point guard ... Terry ). Everyone and their mothers know that at any given point hack-a-Rocket can get you back in the game. No matter how successful it is, it breaks momentum. From watching all 82 games this year, needless to say Rockets are a streaky team. Hack-a-Rocket is the best way to stop Houston from running away with it. Just from this strategy alone, Dallas wins at least 2.
Clippers - Spurs : Spurs in 6. Popovich knows when to peak his team for the right time. Which team has been hotter than SA in the last month or so? They're a team built for the playoffs, and I wouldn't bet against them.
Grizzlies - Blazers : Grizz in 7. Gut feeling on this one, but Memphis good at playing a defensive, slow style at home. Marc Gasol has been impressive too. If Aldridge can play heavy minutes this series then maybe Blazers can win. But I'm leaning Memphis for now.
Phew, that was long post.

Very interesting diagram.
Regarding the Mavs. I agree that the Rockets will probably take it. But wasn`t the Mavs eventually even more done last year as well?
Then they were the one team making the Spurs life the most difficult in the playoffs. It was 1 vs 8 in first round if I remember right.
@547984: No you are not alone with 6th man. He will be high on the list. But I guess someone like Isiah Thomas will take it and it will be well deserved no matter, which one.
For coach it will be between Budenholzer (Hawks) and Kerr. I guess 2nd one will take it as he is a rookie and has the best league record. With a better team than the Hawks though. But as a rookie, it`s brilliant.
And while I agree that he is not going to win Best Coach, I think Rick Carlisle is often far too low in this list as the decision goes over the win-lose ratio often. But he used to get teh best of all players. Best example is Monta Ellis, who was a absolute low scoring guard and improved a lot under Carlisle. As some say, Ellis might be one of the best ever without a All Star participation. Also his mid season transfers use to work a lot faster than with other coaches.

@roturn - Mavs are a really likable team and I love Dirk, but he isn't that good right now. Also Rondo has really killed their spacing which was very important to Monta and Dirk and he also didn't play good D. Watched every game last year and I was pleasantly surprised they pushed Spurs to a game 7 and maybe they will do it again. Like I said, it's the playoffs.
Also, bookmakers are saying this will be rather close so I'm probably wrong, but this is just how I see it.
@code - Hack-a-Rocket it's a good tactic, but then so is hack-a-Rondo. He's is terrible from the line.
Also, I don't watch a lot Bucks games either, but saying MCW is a good player let alone the best on his team it's terrible. Middleton is their best player, lol at Pistons for giving up on him so easy.
I remembered this article when you guys discussed about DAJ D:
https://www.basket...re-jordan/
Also, lol MCW:

Dirk was good until November. Then struggled with small injuries in December and his % dropped. But in last month or so he improved again and should be ready for the playoffs.
Also Chandler was strong recently and Rondo finally showed Boston like stats in last few games and imo he was not too bad defensively.
The thing with Hack-a-Rondo is that Dallas has lots of options on the guard positions. So if they start to foul him, there is still Barea, Harris, Felton (who improved recently) and Ellis. Probably the Rockets would love to have just one of them for the 1.
Biggest concern is that Parsons and Harris might miss game 1 and it`s questionable how fit they are for the rest of the series. Without them it`s a lot tougher.
That said Montejunas and Beverley will miss the Rockets as well.
Will definitely be the most interesting series I think. Unfortunately I will miss the last few games depending how long it is. Really a pity. |

Ah, yes, forgot about Middleton. He is quite a solid player, you are right on this one.

Clippers
Great to take an early lead with some key CP3 and Griffin performances with nice Jamaal contribution.
Deandre with 4 blocks including monster one on Ginobili, tell me something about bad defenders, you meant Duncan probably
(with that said i like the article sosososik posted, i already read it before and it is a nice and reasonable read, but i think it ignores question of defensive rebounding as part of defense and also dont forget that perimeter defending is somewhat easier than in the paint, so guards and wings always look like better defenders overall. Also for me, DJ is not a candidate for DPOTY, but not far from that in my eyes, he still is top10 in defensive rating).
Other matches with expected results in their openers...

Didn't watch the whole game, but just from watching the first half it was pretty clear Clippers absolutely raped the Spurs in the paint. This series is going to be very difficult for San Antonio if Duncan keeps getting shut down..
Speaking of Duncan, there is at least one person that was not too happy about his performance
Spoiler
Good thing I didn't go for it

Lame last five minutes from the Pelicans in just recently finished game, they allowed like 5 offensive rebounds in clutch moments and Thompson went on fire, so 2-0 lead for the Warriors, but the game was close again.

Quite an interesting article about DJ and how he changes both offensive and defensive plans of the other teams with just being in the paint, waiting. I hate that foul a Jordan strategy though, i dont feel it like honest sportmanship tactics, but whatever, we will beat Spurs anyway.
Ginobili himself says:
"He's just very intimidating, there's no way around it," said Ginobili. "It's something that we know, and it forces us to change our shots."

Dallas - Rockets was again very close. Until the 4th quarter unfortunately only.
There Josh Smith exploded bringing several assists to Howard mainly.
Now it`s going to be hard for Dallas. They need to win both on home soil now. |

You think you hate that strategy, come on, being a Rockets fan is 10x worse
Popovich is right though, he said that he hates using that tactic, but it's his job to win, so there's not much to be done.
