Giro d'Italia 2014 - Stage 17
There will be many among you who remember this stage. Roberto finally went the distance, and made a statement about who the man of the next decade would become. He didn't only dominate in the Vuelta, he could do it against Nibali in the Giro. No doubt he could do it in the Tour as well, but that's for later.
Roberto and Nibali in a chat, trying to get along after the day before. They would never become best friends (too direct competitors), but they would remain very friendly and professional with each other throughout their entire careers.
Colombia Coldeportes worked hard but when the attacks of the pseudo-favorites started, Roberto was on his own.
But Roberto had a strange kind of logic. When he was on his own, he interpreted it as a sign to make the pace and really go on his own. He did.
The stage ended after a descent. Several riders were coming, like Nibali, Mollema... Everyone knew that if Roberto reached the top alone, he was gone for the win, he descended way too fast. But if someone could reach him before the descent, they could keep up with him and not lose time, maybe.
Nibali tried to put some pressure on Roberto, he was a very skilled descender himself. But no match for Roberto.
Roberto didn't give it 100%, but enough to take the win. He didn't need to go 100%, as he heard through the communication that Mollema was way behind. His battle was won already.
Worth mentioning is Forero, who worked incredibly hard all through the Giro. He was a talented sprinter, but was okay with riding purely domestique for Roberto. This stage was the end of his Giro. He didn't finish, but Roberto made sure he got a €500 raise the next season.

It seems as if Roberto would be taking all jerseys again, if nothing went wrong. He would have done this at his first Vuelta, first Giro. What about his first Tour...?
Anyway, this Giro was coming to an end. With two more mountain stages and a time trial left, Roberto was on his way to winning his third Grand Tour.
Bauke Mollema:
I was fine until the downhill part. I wanted to follow Nibali there, but I made some mistakes and got scared, I will try to take back time, but knowing Roberto, it won't be easy.
Roberto Velásquez:
Mollema is not as strong as the first two weeks, I think. He's still very strong but I noticed he reacted much slower when I went uphill. Mollema of a week ago would've been on my wheel instantly. Now's the time to strike again, I have two more stages left to do it. |

You better live up to these expectations

You're being optimistic. I don't think the Giro is won since we have the ITT in Milano left |

francopell: About time, too
kimiopn: He's surprising everyone with this performance!
JuanMotr: Thanks! Let's hope he brings it home now.
Atlantius: Thank you!
Daggen: He sure is
fcancellara: I can't guarantee anything for place 2-5, but Roberto will try everything to get that win
sutty68: Thanks! His win-counter is up to three now, in the Giro
Jakstar22: Thanks mate
Daggen: That's true! But if Roberto manages to keep that 2 minute lead, I don't see anyone threatening him. Especially since that final TT will rely more on rec than TT, so Roberto might even win it |

ROBERTO IS AWESOME - back of a chair in the bus
Roberto wasn't comfortable with only 2 minutes of Nibali, Nibali being the better time trialer. He went looking for glory, and he did this from the final downhill part of the Giro. We'll let the photos speak for themselves, they say so much more than words ever could.

Roberto Velásquez:
This Giro has been extraordinary. It's an amazing tour and I'd really like to return here. It was a nice race and Mollema, Nibali and the other riders made me sweat at times, it wasn't easy. I'm so glad, but at the time so tired. I just want to forget about cycling now, I'll take a couple of days recup and then start working again. I just want to enjoy this for a little while, with the team! We all worked hard and we all deserve a break.
Vincenzo Nibali:
Hats off to Roberto. He's an ox, real strong. I tried my best but I didn't succeed. I'm afraid this guy will decide the sport for the coming years...
Roberto's trainer:
This is a brilliant day, we're all so happy The entire team worked hard and it payed off. It's just unbelievable what a talent he is. I can't think of anyone, except Merckx (from 68-74), that wins every Grand Tour he competes in, I hope he can keep this up!
Eddy Merckx:
What a talent. I can't remember ever seeing such a hungry rider, except for myself in the old days. He's the only one who matched my 68 Giro when I took all major jerseys. He even did it at the Vuelta, which I never did. But I did it at the Tour. Roberto, challenge accepted? (laughs)
