Tour du Haut Var Stage 1
February 20th, 2013
Hi guys. My plan for today, consists of resting for most of the stage, and then preparing for any possible moves later in the stage. I dont think I will have to do much, but that hill 20km out, could be the launching pad for some moves, and I just cant be sure. For now I;m just a protected rider in the team, as there is no clear cut leader, but I'm fine with that, as I have a lot of other strong riders on the team with me, and I'm not targeting this race anyway.
The stage started off with a huge breakaway of over 10 riders. Normally a breakaway wouldn't be let go on the first stage of a race, but being only two days, and with the number of riders in it, its a possibility that they stay away.
However a bunch of the sprinters teams take pulls at the front and bring back the breakaway riders with 15km left in the very un-eventful stage so far.
The sprint starts up and I've decided to risk my overall ambitions to try and help Ben Swift with a stage win. I go hard at the front for about 400m before Swifty pulls out of my slipstream. Other sprinters come flying past me, and thats job done for me, I can sit up.
Marcato takes the victory on the stage, with Valverde using the small incline to his advantage. Swifty finished a solid 5th which is alright considering, he had a one man lead-out. The first 4 positions were very tightly fought over, but in the end a Frenchman didn't prevail, and only one stage left for them to do so! Can they do it?

Nice fifth by Swifty, good luck for the second stage.
I must confess to something: I was looking on the second to last picture and thought what a great lead-out for you. And then i realized at the finishing line David is not riding for Europcar

Thank you! That can happen sometimes, but it was still a great leadout

Tour du Haut Var Stage 2
February 21st, 2013
Hi everyone! We're now onto stage 2 and it's slightly harder than yesterdays stage. My plan is to support Swifty who has become the team leader. I'm not sure, but a day in the breakaway could be whats on the menu for me. Today is still sunny and warm, perfect for riding. Let's get to the racing!
The days action begins with an 11 man breakaway. There's normally not much worry about a break this large, but as its the final stage Acqua will want to bring this one back.
Now with 100km to go (base of the climb at 106km) Arvesen attacks looking to bridge the gap up to leaders.
At the top of the climb he's gained 2 minutes on the peloton, but only 1:30 on the breakaway. He will have to descend quickly if he is to catch them with a gap of 2:35.
Near the bottom of the descent, Arvesen has brought it to within a minute, but he cant be expected to get any closer with a long flat section coming up.
And so eventually he is brough back, with 30km to go. It was a great effort by him, but it never looked like it was going to work out.
Now with 15km to go, the rest of the breakaway has been brought back. At the top of the final hill, I'm feeling the pressure, and I have to drop back to stop my heart from exploding out of my chest. Obviously I'm not in as great form as I first thought, which wont be good for next week.
And because of the hill, Swifty is all alone in the front group, of 30 riders. Mostly Movistar and Acqua riders.
The sprint begins with Dimitri Muravyev leading it out for a couple of his team-mates behind him. Swift is on the far right, following Valverde.
But in the closing metres Valverde passes Muravyev and takes the win and the overall! What a way to start the season for him!
A minute or so after the winners, I arrive at the finish. It wasn't my best effort, but I dont see what else I could have done better!

Thanks guys! Its not too special, but I like it.
I also have a bit more motivation lately, however I have lots of schoolwork due wednesday morning and tonight I have hockey, so I might not have an update for a couple days.
