One can only wonder what would've happened if the break had gone a slight bit harder at the start and gained an extra 50 seconds....they'd have lapped the field and we'd have Kvachuk or Tamayo or whoever as champion.
I think the strong teams would have ridden their asses out to drop them and then they would get the lap back Unless all lapped riders would have had to step down ?
Officially, that would have been the case if they got lapped, but i wouldn't rly see that happening.

The stewards would have to disqualify everyone who was now a lap behind.
If they enforced "unusual circumstances" (which has never been enforced for lapped riders in any race), they could allow the race to go on......and I refuse to believe the bunch could drop Kvachuk by a full lap (that's TWENTY FOUR MINUTES) before the finish.
Heck, Kvachuk was in front for a trillion years, didn't have a peloton to draft, sat up when he was caught, and still only lost half that.
He'd be world champion.

They'd probably have enforced it, but I agree, they'd never have dropped Kvachuck (at worst he'd lost a couple minutes, but that would be nowhere near enough). |

Back in the 1982 Tour, Regis Clère almost did it...he would've succeeded if he hadn't had 3 consecutive mechanicals just as he was arriving at the finishing circuit with a lead that was easily enough.
Talk about bad luck.

They still were relying 24 minutes, weren't they? They would drop the dead Kvachuk as soon as they would have realised he caught them and they would catch him later The relayd those 24 minutes quite a lot kms before finish, didn't they? |

Not sure, but he almost had one lap before the pack even reached the circuit. |

I finally got to see the race. Nice one Thor - not one of the riders I would have most liked to see win it, but not one of the riders I would have least liked to see win it, so me happy

Nicely done, Thor! I was cheering for him, as I do in all the races he's in 'cause he's my favourite sprinter. I'm very happy for the guy! |

Just seen the race now, and have to say I groaned when the camera shot showed the pack had caught up with the Kolobnev/Evans/Schleck etc group. Its a course where clearly the hill should have been decisive, and for a few moments looked like it was going to be, but all that followed meant otherwise. So thats a shame.
Annoying also that Ive only been able to watch BBC's hour highlights show this time around, and they were atrociously put together. They kept jumping around and missing out chunks, and then while showing the final lap in its entirety, decide that at a key moment in the race, what the viewer wants is to be taken away to watch Chris Boardman walking along the bridge, or up the climb, talking about how decisive this bit of the course could be. They had the exact some clips interrupting the Womens Race aswell.
Although worse was with Gusevs move. It was very clear to see Gilbert being passed - but both Porter and Boardman missed it, and were convinced that Gilbert was still in front right up until the finishing straight when they finally realised that if the TV cameras are not showing Gilbert, that is because Gilbert is not there to be shown. At one point, Hugh Porter even mistook a motorbike for Gilbert in an overhead shot, to help convince himself that he was right.

They weren't the only ones. Liggett and Sherwin got it wrong as well and I was just screaming at the TV. "NO YOU IDIOTS!" I couldn't imagine watching the sport without them but sometimes they really are unobservant people |

1... 2... 3... ... Hmm... Again. 1... 2... 3... No not there yet... 1... 1... 1... Still not there! ½... ½... ½...

If there were in circuit Peloton should have moved in one part of the road and the ucrainan rider in the other like a crono.
Otherwise i don't think it was one lap because in the finish Zolt Der of Serbia get +22:50 on Thor, and was the last of riders so the last not overlapped.

A rider (X, Y, Z, ...) deserves to be in the world elite or not, but every nation would deserve one rider there ? I must miss a logical connection somewhere... |

Yeah, I didn't get that either. Unless he means that elite = riding on the ProTour?
But Hushovd is definitely an elite rider. You can't deny that. |
