Paris - Nice (WT) Stage 5/8, 201.4 kms Even though this fifth stage is not the hardest on paper, it does feature the only summit finish of this edition. After over 190 kms of racing, the pack or its remains will face a climb to Croix de Chaubouret. It is a 10 km climb with an average gradient of 6.4% while the steepest ones are at 8.8%, as opposed to the slightly inaccurate road profile we provided. The awful conditions didn't keep a five man group from attacking inside the first 5 kms. Apart from earlier attackers Terpstra and Boem, there were some lesser-known names: Davy Gunst, Michaël Baer and lastly Tilegen Maidos, the latter clearly being the best climber in this group. As the rain kept pouring down a second rider of Trek-Segafredo joined the group: Baptiste Planckaert. And jointly they continued to the very first climb, where Trek's two-man strategy would pay off immediately... Planckaert, surely one of the weakest climbers among the 6 escapees, surprisingly grabbed the first mountain points. That very scenario would smoothly repeat itself as he'd strike again at the next polka dot banner. The long flat section after the second climb was partly used by Movistar to reduce the gap to the breakaway, but still these guys would start the hilly finale with an advantage of more than 2 minutes. Soon afterwards their advantage shrank even more as guys got dropped from the break. Next BMC took charge of the chase while our riders near the front were about to run out of water bottles due to a crash of water carrier Ochoa in the descent before the penultimate climb. Luckily we could count one a rock solid MartÃnez, who survived until the foot of the final climb. He would take care of the whole bottle issue by himself in the last descent. Meanwhile Maidos had played his final card on that next to last hill, as only Boem could still keep up with him. But in the background the pack was closing in on the two of them, regardless of what they were trying. The first big gun to attack was Gianluca Brambilla, who then opened a gap of 40" quickly. At that point we still had a trio near the front: Sam Vandenborre, Jonathan Klever and Sebastian Henao. They decided to wait a small while longer until the other leaders would try to counter. When did they though none of these three could still follow. Two Tinkoff guys struggled too and only 3 riders managed to bridge. Vandenborre proved to be the strongest guy of our team today and ended up being the engine of a third group of 4 riders among whom was Simon Yates. Those four (former Vuelta winners Barguil and Kelderman, American champion Van Garderen and Brambilla) tackled the final 1500 meters as Vandenborre tried to get away from his group in order to bridge to the second one consisting of Vincenzo Nibali and Geraint Thomas... Both the stage and the latest yellow jersey went to Kelderman, as he concluded the day with a strong sprint. Behind, Vandenborre finished in 6th thanks to a strong last 1000 meters. He's doing well but I don't think the remaining stages are hard enough to catch up. He'll just aim for the highest possible spot while protecting his white jersey

Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 2/7, 200.1 kms A long stage with a possibly tricky finale to kick off the post-TTT part of the race. Our main job is to protect Carlos Barbero and Ion Izagirre. It took awhile for a breakaway to originate, but eventually three Italian riders cooperated with Optum's Tanner Putt. None of them were really good climbers and thus the first KoM battle was a close one. In the end Enrico Barbin won it while two of them already seemed be struggling. At the second categorised climb Barbin was once again the best but he decided waiting for the others was the better option. Still more than 50 kms left and on top of that, they had already lost one third of their six-minute gap between the 2 summits, so no way he'd make it on his own. When the peloton hit the descent of that second climb, suddenly a large group had to pursue after a huge crash that involved a lot of interesting names. Guys like Bardet, Daniel Martin and Quintana were confirmed to be with that group, which forced their respective teams to drop back. An intense effort seemed to secure their comeback but just before the 20 KM mark, a new crash occured. Quintana and Martin were involved again along with Contador this time as they'd lose at least 2'56" today. Meanwhile in front, Tanner Putt tried a final push. In vain though, as it would only result in him getting rid of the other escapees. A thoroughly reduced pack reeled him in soon afterwards, now racing a severe pace. Trying to keep the gap between him and the GC riders that got dropped as vast as possible, Ion Izagirre took care of Barbero's leadout all by himself. And even though he squeezed every last drop out of himself... It wasn't enough to keep up when four of the world's best riders on the flat accelerated again. It seemed like the stage would be one for either Ewan, Bennett or Debusschere, the former being in the best position. Eventually Bennett eventually beat Ewan by quite a gap while Barbero showed a good sprint as he secured another podium spot for us today. Paris - Nice (WT) Stage 6/8, 189.2 kms Apart from the climb at the very beginning of the stage there are once again only few difficulties. But either way we must remain concentrated as soon as we all hit the undulating finale in the rain that is forecasted. Soon after the descent of the Col de la République the showers already started to come down. Six riders had then teamed up already: Ochoa, Izendegi, Vorobyev, Furer, Maître, Helling and Vabourzeix. But our guy previously had to bridge a one-minute gap and all of a sudden he'd pay for it on the second climb. Suffering from intense cramps, a smart decision to drop out of the break and await the pack was quickly made. And while the pack had started to reduce the advantage of the break of the day relatively early, they had to put in an extra acceleration to keep their chances of winning this stage alive. On the last climb 1 guy kicked out of the break: Thomas Vaubourzeix. Meanwhile Vandenborre and MartÃnez got boxed in on that climb, as both of them got pushed back. The uphill final 1000 meters caused Vaubourzeix's advantage to come down, but he did bring home a desirable win for himself and his French team. Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 3/7, 189 kms One more rather easy-looking ride was waiting for the pack at the third stage. Most likely the real racing would not start before tackling the last 30 kms, where a short but steep climb might offer a chance to make up for some lost time, but only if climbed fast enough to crack the peloton. Only three guys seemed to want a breakaway spot today, and only they would get one. For most of the stage, Kevin Dowe, Ben King and the biggest name in the group Guillaume Van Keirsbulck cooperated well but still they had a lead of only two minutes left at the foot of the climb. Ion Izagirre pulled the bunch on the climb, causing a breach that was much bigger than many would've have expected. About 30 riders were left in this group that neutralised the break of the day soon afterwards. Izagirre started pulling for Barbero. However the former indicated the latter should jump on someone else's wheel, as he was running out of strength inside the final 5 kms. Barbero chose the wheel of race leader Fabio Felline, who was cozily sitting in the back car of Tinkoff's train... And got boxed in at the right-hand side, while Izagirre stranded at the left. At the front Coquard seemed ready to leave Caleb Ewan's wheel. And that's what he'd do to win the third stage, as Barbero concluded a stage that we could have gotten so much more out of in sixth position. Paris - Nice (WT) Stage 7/8, 183.4 kms Even though many times the stage to Nice has more climbs than any of the other, it hardly ever influences the final overall standings. That is if there's no mountain time trial at the Col d'Èze awaits the riders the day after. This time around that is not the case, so most probably this'll be a chance for the break and only the KoM winner will be known already. Several riders saw this opportunity and escaped at the very first ascent of the Col de Vence. Besides Klever, Teklehaimanot and Howes were the main climbers in the group. Vaubourzeix was facing a tough day in the saddle if he really expected to retain his polka dot mountain jersey. Teklehaimanot quickly proved to have the best legs as he collected a load of points at the first summits. At the penultimate climb, he did not look back and continued on his own. The Eritrean quickly grew a gap of several minutes, but his once 10-minute gap to the pack decreased and so did his hope of seizing the stage along with the yellow leader jersey. Multiple minutes later at that same climb, Vandenborre tried to follow an acceleration of Kelderman, but he had to let go just before the top. Their move would flop quickly as they were both reeled in the descent, along with the remaining breakaway riders, excluding Teklehaimanot. When he learned that Geraint Thomas and Warren Barguil both were struggling to follow the pace of a now reduced bunch, Henao sacrificed his personal GC ambitions. He set the pace at the last climb but did not succeed in dropping any other top 10 rider, as Barguil somehow even made it back. Proximately 25 riders hit the descent towards the beach. Teklehaimanot did have plenty of time and reason to celebrate at the Promenade des Anglais, as he had just secured a stage win and a KoM jersey. Behind him only Elissonde tried to play his card in the descent. And even though some riders had their difficulties, the group arrived in one piece. Hopefully he'll deliver as a 6th place and the white jersey would be another step forward compared to his 11th place (and 2nd in the -25 standings) at last year's Tirreno-Adriatico.
And for the team too as 8th is our best result ever at this race so far

Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 4/7, 228.8 kms Not even the longest but certainly one of the main stages in this year's edition. Everyone's in for some tough racing, especially in the final LBL-esque kilometers, which are spiced up with short but very steep climbs. Seven riders ended up together in the breakaway when smaller groups of escapees had joined forces. Zardini, Sérgio Henao and Courteille having in there meant the others would have a very hard time trying to follow, let alone beating them having raced beyond the 200 kms mark. We would never find out as the bunch gave them a hard time from the very beginning, keeping the gap at about two minutes all the time. The breakaway was over before the first intermediate sprint and afterwards Tinkoff really started to rock the boat. Their team's truly blistering pace some huge separation but still it was not fast enough for Alaphilippe, whose move was so strong only Oomen aimed to grab onto his wheel. But at the next climb already, the current blue jersey wearer managed to get rid of his companion. While his Tinkoff buddies were limiting the pace in the 3rd group, Alaphilippe kept gaining ground on everybody. Izagirre had completely missed Tinkoff's move and was sitting in a 4th group for now. Together with Daniel Martin, Dylan Teuns and MichaÅ‚ Kwiatkowski, all he could do was hope for a moment of doubt in one of the front groups. Tom Slagter then tried to chase down Oomen and escaped from the 3rd group together with A. Yates, Aru and Gallopin. When Alaphilippe had already conquered the final climb in Chieti, the 3rd group desperately tried to catch Oomen, but they didn't succeed in doing so. The latter must have kept up a steady pace on the climbs too. Instead that very third group suddenly had to look over their shoulders when the next one started closing in. Ion Izagirre had to let go of Dan Martin and Dylan Teuns first, but he fought his way back to that duo. At the steepest slopes he would drop Kwiatkowski and Fuglsang too. Minutes after Alaphilippe, Galoppin won the sprint for third place. His group had not caught up with Oomen in time. Izagirre came home 25" down on them, he concluded a rough but exciting stage in 9th position.
