21/4 - 28/4 Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey (cat. 2.HC)

23/4 Stage 3/8: Alanya - Elmalı 151,8 km

Christina: Todays stage starts in Alanya moving west into the Taurus Mountains north west of Elmalı, up the the Göğübeli (Mountain Pass) close to the tiny village of Yapraklı, about 1850m above sea level.

Gogubeli Pass, Taurus Mountains:

Last year Kenny Elissonde won this stage, and took the overall lead of the race, we hope he can do that again.

Yapraklı:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Tapra_zpswyfylv9i.jpg

Pre-race Strategy: We will stay in the peloton to the start of the race, but might send Lasse Bøchman out when we get to the mountains, if he look good. Creating an outpost from Ellisonde.

Profile:

A morning break with 4 riders, including race favorite Cristiano Monguzzi (Vini Fantini), they get a gap of about 3 min.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsfx9zqkil.jpg

On the way up to Göltarla village (cat 1.), James Perry (MTN) has lost contact with the breakaway and are back in the peloton. The remaining break has got 53 sec., 8 km to the top, 63 km to the finish line.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsjqzofcy3.jpg

The breakaway cannot hold, everyone is back together after the climb to Göltarla. With a high pace the peloton reach the final climb. As soon as the climbing gets tough, a dangerous attack. It is Marcos García (Caja Rural) countered by Merhawi Kudus (MTN), Fabio Duarte (Avianca) and Diego Rosa (Androni Giocattoli), 10 km to the top.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpswqv7xfqg.jpg

A little later it is Kanstantsin Siutsou (Accent Jobs – Wanty) attacking, Ellisonde is not feeling good today, he just haven’t got the legs, but he can’t sit in the peloton and lose more time, Ellisonde attacks trying to get up to Siutsou.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsdmffubv3.jpg

Up front Kudus accelerate for a period; the pressure is too much for Rosa and Duarte, the front is split in two.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpsr1ljcpmy.jpg

In the sprint Marcos García is the strongest taking 15 sec. on Kudus, Elissonde gets in 6th. in the same time as Siutsou, they lose 1’37 to García.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/6_zpskhsdvcwl.jpg

Christina: Not what we had hoped for, Elissonde having a bad day on this particular stage was very bad for us. It is more or less impossible that he can get 1’57 back. We couldent get Bøchman away, the race was just to hard today.
We got the KoM, that is something.

Mixed fortunes for the team so far in Turkey...

Hope Elissonde gets his second breath soon Wink

AbhishekLFC/sutty68:
I guess the pressure was just too much for Ellisonde, going into the a high profile race like this, as defending champ.pcmdaily.com/images/smiley/wink.gif
We just have to keep fighting, hopefully get a stage podium, to at least keep the management happy.pcmdaily.com/images/smiley/rolleyes.gif

24/4 Stage 4/8: Fethiye – Marmaris 130,4 km

Christina: The caravan has moved about 80 km southwest, from the mountains to Fethiye by the Mediterranean Sea. Fethiye is located on the site of Ancient city Telmessos (Ancient Greek: Τελμησσός). Telmessos was the most important city in ancient Lycia, a confederation of independent city-states. Telmessos known history dates back to 500 BC,

Tomb of Amyntas, Fethiye (350 BC):

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/9658929450_4_cities-of-antiquity_zpseclomw0t.jpg

Pre-race Strategy: Last year this stage was won by Davy Commeye from a breakaway. Looking for a stage win, we will try to attack with Schumacher on the final climb if possible. At the same time we have to be careful not to lose time with Ellisonde.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsohacatnu.jpg

The Morning break is two riders, Mikhail Ignatiev (RusVelo) and James Perry (MTN), the fact that he did not get anything from yesterday’s break, won’t stop him trying again.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpstnyzogfk.jpg

About mid stage, a new attack this time with strong riders, including race favorite Yukiya Arashiro (Garmin – Sharp).the situation with 50 km to the finish:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps5antv6ut.jpg

Group Arashiro is reeled back in, on the final climb Ellisonde attacks followed by Schumacher and Michael Valgren (Saxo), 10 km to the line.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zps16oi8u2r.jpg

Ellisonde and Schumacher gets caught by the peloton on the descend, but Valgren gets away and win a solo victory with 25 sec. to the peloton. Our best is Kenny Elissonde (8)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpskz3toldq.jpg

Christina: First of all I’d like to congratulate fellow countryman Michael Valgren on a splendid solo victory. We lost a spot on the CG due to the bonus sec., but all in all it is not much worse than it already was. We just have to keep fighting for a good stage.

Still a descent shot at the overall podium I believe. Provided there are enough climbing stages off course...

sutty68
Elissonde can still challenge for a podium place Wink

Tamijo
AbhishekLFC/sutty68: Only one semi-hard uphill finish left, don't think it is enough for a GC podium.

But hopefully a stage podium.

25/4 Stage 5/8: Marmaris – Turgutreis 189.0 km

Christina reports: Is not certain when Marmaris was founded, but in the 6th century BC It was known as Physkos and considered part of Caria, originally a Syro-Hittite kingdom from aprox. 1100 bc, later dominated by Greeks, Persian, ect. ect., According to the historian Herodotus (born in Caria 484 BC) there had been a castle in Marmaris since 3000 BC.

Several rider gets away early on the route, Pedersen attacks to try and catch up.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsgsfgjnub.jpg

Pedersen catch the front group at the start of the climb to Kızılağaç Köyü (cat1), over the top of the mountain they got about 5’30 to the peloton. Near the last hard climb, it is up to over 7 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpscnq0xawa.jpg

From there the peloton gets closer and closer, on the last hill with just a few km left, Martin Pedersen tries to attack before the breakaway gets caught.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsn9yortde.jpg

But the peloton is too fast, it comes to a mass sprint. Andrea Guardini (Omega Pharma) wins the stage over Michael Matthews (Garmin), our best is Kenny Elissonde (20)

21/4 - 28/4 Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey (cat. 2.HC)

26/4 Stage 6/8: Bodrum – Selcuk (Virgin Marry) 180,3 km

Christina Reports: Some archaeologically evidence point in the direction of a Mycenaean (Greek) settlement back in 1500-1200 BC., but usually Halicarnassus a settlement founded around 1000 BC, by Dorian Greek’s, it accepted as the origin of today’s Bodrum.
This is the last good time for Ellisonde to gain some time in the GC, with the last uphill finish.

The classical Antique Theatre of Bodrum:
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/theatre_zpswf216zmo.jpg

Pre-race strategy: Today we can’t let a breakaway take the stage, we need Ellisonde to finish good on this stage, we will try to keep break in a short like and setup Ellisonde for the last hard climb.

Profile:
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsqygr7nb0.jpg

A morning break of 6 riders, the strongest undoubtedly Nick Nuyens (Omega Pharma), but the break should not be a threat on a stage like this.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsquligwck.jpg

As planned we set 3 riders in front, never letting the break get more than 3 min.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps2nmuk21a.jpg

10 km to the finish, now we are really pulling hard, Nick Nuyens has got 1’58, most of the break at 1’38.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsq6muvbu5.jpg

On the climb Ellisonde pulls hard with the help of Schumacher, the break is soon over. Ellisonde attacks and only Kudus (MTN) and Duarte (Avianca) can hang on.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsjsqrktan.jpg

Ellisonde is the strongest in the sprint; he takes the win over Merhawi Kudus. Duarte gets the last podium. They have 29’ to Rosa and 1’05 to race leader Garcia.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpsdrd0uz32.jpg

Christina: Perfect team effort, nicely finished by Ellisonde, I will sleep a lot better tonight, after a stage win, getting back to top 5, and the KoM jersey on Ellisonde tomorrow.

27/4 Himmerland Rundt (cat.1.2)

Farsø – Aars : 198.2 km

Rasmussen reports: I am here in Denmark, in the small town Farsø, we are here for “Himmerland rundt”.
More and more archaeological evidence point to the conclusion that the Cimbrian’s, who attacked the Roman Empire in 113–101 BC, originated from Himmerland. Amongst the findings in Himmerland is “Gundestrupkarret” the silver tub has a circumference of 2m and a weight of 9 kg. Produced between 150-0 BC in southern Europe, an unbelievable valuable piece, reflecting the wealth and power of the owner.

Gundestrupkarret:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Gundestrupkarret_DO-2338_tif_zpszasgoesf.jpg

Pre-race strategy:
Francisco José Pacheco won this race last year, with Sondre Holst Enger as leadout. He won’t get that kind of help this time, but we expect him to have a good shot at a podium finish. We expect to stay in the peloton.

Profile:
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsitnxktcj.jpg

A huge morning break of 11 riders take of early on the stage. The weather is extremely rough, 7 °C and a very heavy rain falling.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zps8xklyg50.jpg

We send two riders up front, to help controlling the breakaway.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps98d0yper.jpg

The break doesn’t hold, and we set up a train, looks good with 4 km to the line.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpszi1o0wty.jpg

We mess up the sprint a little, Francisco José Pacheco is not delivered at the right moment. The stage is won by Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg (Champion System) over Michael Van Staeyen (Synergy Baku).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsjxklusz7.jpg

27/4 Stage 7/8: Kusadasi – Izmir 116.6 km

Christina reports: The caravan has traveled just 25 km, from the mountains to Kusadasi (bird island), the Kusadasi area was an outpost of ancient city Ephesus, a site 3 km from the center “Pygela” is believed to date back to around 1000 BC, according to legend used by Agamemnon (Mythical King and leader in the Trojan War) to rest and heal his wounded soldiers.

Kusadasi:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/KUSADASI_2_zpslsrq4x1u.jpg

Pre-race strategy: We don’t mind much what happens as long as we keep the GC top5 and the KoM. We will stay close to Ellisonde all day.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsyhnzvr69.jpg

The morning break is just two riders. The strongest Nicki Sørensen (Saxo)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpskenoxhzf.jpg

About 95 km left, another two rider’s attacks, they will later join the two in front. The breakaway get a maximum of a little more than 5 min.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsyhndszci.jpg

Just 1.6 km to the finishing line, all the sprinters a starting the sprints, Daniel Teklehaimanot from the breakaway has still got 35 sec., it is going to be close.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zps0n7ekls7.jpg

Michael Matthews (Garmin – Sharp) is again very fast, he just manages to pass Teklehaimanot on the last meters. Our best today is Philip Nielsen, with a fine sprint he gets 6th.
